Narnia plotholes?

So just re-reading Silver Chair (after watching the bbc edition twice and loving it!), and thought of this big plothole that may have altered Jill and Eustaces experience:
If Glimfeather and the owls can carry humans up to the Marshwiggles, why couldn’t they just carry them onto Caspians ship which had just left port so they could greet him as per the first sign?

Got me thinking, what other plotholes can you think of for any of the books?

ALS instructor advice - I’ve forgotten the whole GIC schtick

Soon to do my first instructor candidate thing but did my GIC like 10 months ago and have forgotten everything and the way they tell us to teach. Any tips or tricks on how to be a successful instructor? It’s a one day ALS

Obvs just like be nice, supportive and know the manual/content. I have been given one skills station so far but not what sim or whatever I’m doing after.

How do you normally find instructor candidates, anything you would want them to be doing?

Thanks for the advice!

What could be the issue? Loose connection or need new wiring?

Recent new homeowner (as in bought a home, not a new home (from the 60s)). Lounge lights (three wall lights controlled with one dimmer switch) were working absolutely fine. Now they largely flicker and don't work. I flicked the fuse box off and on again and it resolved the issue for a day before it happened again. It's incredibly temperamental and currently the lights are working, but not sure what the issue could be. Have put it on checkatrade but have got no bites so wondering if it's either a) not worth an electricians time because it's too easy or b) not worth electricians time because it's too weird and likely a lot of work?

Any help is very appreciated. Let me know if you need any photos / more details.

Thank you!

Speech delay reassurance

LO is 11mo, born 2months prem (corrected age 9m). Current milestones:
- now cruising with furniture. Crawling and pulling up to standing
- starting to pincer grip, transferring things between hands
- deffo stranger danger, cries when we leave the room, loves peekaboo and smiling and laughing (takes a bit of work to make them laugh though!)
- makes noises but more cooing than anything. No consonants / mama/dada/baba etc. Sometimes turns to their name but maybe just cuz they hear noise not because it’s their actual name.

I’ve heard of “early walkers late speakers”, and I’ve seen the Bluey mums race episode, and I try not to compare to others. I just want to hear a few of those “early walkers late late speakers” stories for some reassurance, or any other pearls of wisdom/experiences.

“gentle hands” parenting

My wife and I want to try and teach our little one (11mo) to be kind, respectful and engaged with their emotions and to regulate properly etc. I’ve seen loads of social media posts about things like “instead of saying “it’s ok” I say “are you upset or just in shock”… that sort of thing. I feel pretty convinced by most of it as it seems to try and get them engaged into recognising and processing things early on. This is also the “we use gentle hands” instead of “don’t hit that” sort of thing.

Social media seems pretty convincing. But I don’t know many other parents and wondering if anyone in the hive mind uses these sorts of techniques and how it actually has panned out. It’s not at all how I was bought up (smacked bum/naughty step etc) so feel a bit out of my depth to know what will work!

Thanks for your responses

Anaesthetic ST4 Application self scoring query

Fellow anaesthetists,

Just trying to look into ST4 criteria and scoring (currently ACCS training and have a couple years to go). I know that the scoring system is likely to change in the next couple of years, and that the points only account for a portion of overall score and interview technique is much more important, but I'm just trying to gauge how may points you scored and how your application was? What's a realistic goal to aim for - there's a few things that score 1 extra point but are so much effort, and I'm already trying to maximise areas that I realistically can. But yeah, just want to know what ballpark successfully candidates have got?

Any advice also appreciated!

Thanks!

Anaesthetic sayings?

For those gas men and women out there, do you have any particularly good / calming / useful phrases or sayings that you find work well in your practice? (Be it general / regional / obstetric)
Interested to make my life easier by not stumbling over my words trying to find the right thing to say!

Stair Gate help please

Advice on getting a stair gate please. Our little menace has just started to crawl so hoping to get this sorted asap.
Ideally want screw-in gates to avoid trip hazards, and would want one top and one bottom (but also happy to hear people’s advice on this).
The issue = the width top and bottom of the gate is different (see picture). For a pressure adjusted I can see this would be ok, but for the wall drilled ones I’m not sure how you account for this?
Looking at the Argos cuggl £20 gate. Do you think this is suitable for our space?

Thanks in advance team!

Ps: please ignore the 3d stone wall, was here when we got the house and my partner and I really wished we had removed it before laying down new carpet…

Help with splitting ISA

Hello,
I have a S&S ISA with T212, but have some joint money with my partner that we want to use to max out my isa.
Is there a way to “split” my current personal ISA into like a different pie or something so I can accurately keep track of joint vs personal money?

Thank you!

Car mirror dashcam help? (this is for parents I promise)

Would like to get a reversing camera in my car (Lexus ct200h) and looking in to mirror monitors.
However, we have our car seat for our little menace behind the passenger seat, with his own mirror on the headrest so he can see us (and so the driver can keep an eye on them).

If we get a mirror monitor, that goes over the internal mirror, rendering us unable to see the little sprog.

Has anyone got any advice on what they have done / what else to explore?

Thanks in advance!

Oral presentation at national conference - anaesthetics

Anaesthetic ACCS trainee looking for advice please. Look for help on how to tick the box on getting a national oral presentation for reg applications.

I have a decent piece of work that’s got a medical education slant and I was wondering if anyone knows of any online/in person conferences in the UK that are set up for residents delivering oral presentations that may be easily accepted? Conferences like RCOA/AoA I think will be tough to get accepted as oral, but maybe there are broader resident / ACCS ones that deal with all specialties?

Thanks in advance!

Travelling to mountainous area with a baby?

Hi all,
Parents of a 9month monster and about to go on holiday to the dolomites - somewhere we have always wanted to go. Now we read that altitude >2000m elevation is a max limit for babies under 1, and in general altitude is not great. Just wondering if anyone has experience taking babies to the dolomites/other mountainous areas?
We would think of taking a cable car while breastfeeding, then walking back down but maybe have to do this in reverse if at all? Or just return when the baby is older and more able?

Advice needed please, thank you!

I live at sea level in the UK normally

Anaesthetists - how do you TIVA RSI?

So I believe there to be 3 main ways:

  1. Don’t, and use separate propofol then start TCI pump. If using effect site then start at lower target so initial bolus is less, or just use plasma site.
  2. 3 way tap - let the small syringe fill to whatever then pause infusion, bolus through line then continue infusion.
  3. Run at maximum rate to high target, then drop down once the syringe has reached your desired volume (eg 10mls if 2%).

I’ve always done 3 way tap but recently made an error of twisting it the wrong way after and not delivering infusion following bolus. Never happened to me before, noticed quickly and no harm but definitely a cautionary tale against something I thought was somewhat safe.

Interested to hear your thoughts, cautionary tales and why.

I’m a big gas fan, so may just sack off tiva and gas forever.

Taking a travel pram on holiday?

Need some advice.
Got an 8 month old - sitting up, not yet crawling. When we go to the park/around town I tend to use a baby bjorn baby carrier with him front facing. We have a travel pram (which is still relatively hefty but fits in overhead storage), and he is ok in it, but his naps are never usually great even with a snooze shade. Then again his naps aren’t fantastic in the carrier either.

We are going on holiday to Italy and Slovenia (Venice/lake garda/dolomites/lake bled etc) and I’m not sure whether to take the pram or not. We are hiring a car that should be big enough to take it, but with that and the car seat we are taking, two rucksacks and two wheely bags, it means the airport journeys / getting around Venice initially and when leaving will be really quite tricky. It’s going to be pretty hot too and not sure if having him in the baby bjorn is practical or if we are risking overheating too much.

Has anyone been around those areas of Italy and wished they did/didn’t take a pram? We intend to do some hiking where I’ll be using the carrier, but it’s more for town chilling / milling around - doable with a carrier too?

Thanks for your advice!!

DIY garden facelift - roast me.

New grass seed (then did some more patches which still aren’t through yet)
Grouted the entire patio
Pressure washed the bastard

Let me know your thoughts!

Also any tips on how to re-weedmat/gravel the path would be appreciated. Is it just a spade/re-mat/put back kind of job?

Squeaky floorboards advice

Since moving in 2 years ago (and putting down new carpet upstairs), we now have ridiculously squeaky floorboards on the landing - enough that it can wake our little one up when I move around in the evening. I’ve seen repair kits online but it requires knowing where the joists are and I have absolutely no idea if I’m not going to accidentally nail a pipe from the bathroom next door.

  1. is it possible to fix these floorboards without ripping up the (still feels like new) carpet?
  2. what tradesperson would you get round to do it
  3. is there a way to see if there are joists under the floorboards? Don’t think my stud finder is doing an adequate job
  4. if you did need to rip the carpet up, is it just as simple to re lay it and make it look as if it hasn’t been up?

Thanks very much!

7 month old baby (ex 33wk premmie but always well just small), started now to slap (much to my crotch’s dismay), but only really slapping with his right hand. I don’t think this counts as hand dominance as he grasps everything equally but don’t know if it’s anything to think more of. I suspect in the next week he will start using left hand equally to slap (more to my crotches dismay I’m sure), but thought I’d ask in case anyone has had similar.
