[magic.gg] Metagame Mentor: Standard Gets a Shakeup in London and Tokyo

Article is at https://magic.gg/news/metagame-mentor-standard-gets-a-shakeup-in-london-and-tokyo

Overall, two card packages continue to serve as the defining pillars of Standard: Llanowar Elves and Badgermole Cub, and Stormchaser's Talent and Boomerang Basics. These pairs dominated the metagame at Pro Tour Secrets of Strixhaven. Although their grip on the format appears to be slowly loosening, they still accounted for approximately half the field combined across Magic Spotlight: Secrets in London and the Champions Cup Final... This past weekend, Stormchaser's Talent players posted a collective 51.2% win rate... This past weekend, players with Badgermole Cub in their deck achieved a collective 51.7% win rate.

...

Even though Izzet Prowess and Selesnya Landfall were the most-played Standard decks last weekend, only a single traditional Izzet Prowess list reached the Top 8 of either tournament, while Selesnya Landfall failed to place a single copy into the elimination rounds.

A couple of interviews had interesting Reality Fracture details, I quoted a few of the highlights, there is more at the links. There were also several other interviews with little bits of info, they're linked at the bottom. I assume there's more, but I can't find them.

https://www.polygon.com/mtg-reality-fracture-commander-deck-multiverse-reforged-spoilers/

>Why only one new Commander deck with Reality Fracture? Verhey said it has a lot to do with past trends in similar sets, where one deck features the interesting new villains and the other has the heroes. He called Phyrexia: All Will Be One the “poster child” for this potential problem. “We're on Phyrexia: Would you rather buy the cool Phyrexian deck with the infect mechanic that's returning, or the red-white token mirror deck?” he said. “It wasn't even close.” Verhey said that many game stores reported selling Corrupting Influence eight-to-one versus Rebellion Rising.

>Verhey hinted that the Commander deck is where Wizards could explore characters who can’t appear in the main set’s paired Echoverse mechanic — including those who are already dead in Magic’s canon. “On the bonus sheet, we couldn't put any characters that were dead, because we’d have to show their current version in our universe and their altered universe version,” he explained. “But if they're deceased, there isn't a current version.”

>"Very early on, we were talking about maybe going broader," Rosewater said. "But we decided that one of the lessons from March of the Machines was we went a little bit too broad, and we decided we wanted to focus a little bit more. So, we'll see nods about [other] places, but really, the story is on Hexhaven."... However, Rosewater reassured me that while Hexhaven is central to Reality Fracture, this set will be different from them doing a Hexhaven-focused set

>Guaranteeing every pack will feature these card pairings is a tall order under normal circumstances... According to Rosewater, only one of Magic's printers could guarantee such consistency... The team therefore had come up with an inventive solution to make this ambitious promise a reality. "It's a very clever solution. We're 100% [sure] we can do it," Rosewater said.

The first three images are relatively unseen, they weren't shown during the preview panel. I also added a thumbnail image from WPN, don't know if the artwork will be used.

Almost everything else was shown during the panel, but these are higher quality images. I didn't include commander decks, scene boxes, or the Reality Fracture gift bundle.

I also included the Omega Collector Booster for Marvel Super Heroes at the end of the gallery, I haven't seen it yet on this sub and it's not that interesting (but is unique art). There was no new artwork for Japanese Collector boosters for these sets or for the Omega booster for The Hobbit.

During the debut video, they didn't explicitly say it went to Reality Fracture but did say they were going to somewhere not on Arcavios and "I really encourage the fans to take a look through, see what you see on each side, and maybe in a future set you'll see the completed cycle."

My belief is that they are going from enemy-color lands through a mono-color portal to an allied-color location that is part of a Reality Fracture school or faction. The art director would want the artist to avoid using colors that the land could not produce, which limits what can be seen on the Reality Fracture side.

Please use spoiler blocks when discussing leaked information.

Deathcap Glade is the simplest to figure out. It's a black/green land going through a green portal to a green/white location.

It does seem likely that the green/white faction in Reality Fracture will be graveyard-focused. The location seems to go to a memorial or coffin. One of green/white's overlaps in the color pie is graveyard mechanics, but it's not often explored as a Limited archetype.

Sundown Pass is a red/white land going through a white portal. If this is a white portal going to a white color allied location, then it has to be white/blue.

For Reality Fracture, this does have two very large statues of books. It's also possible the light source is meant to look like it's coming through pages of a book. My belief is that Secrets of Strixhaven added book subtypes as a seed for Reality Fracture. If so, it's possible that it's from the white/blue faction caring about books.

https://preview.redd.it/phkkxsrbmkxg1.png?width=694&format=png&auto=webp&s=3eb6b8f60fdc3d24ac03a8da5e96db34e50e2588

Dreamroot Cascade would then go into a blue/black location. I've seen speculation that this is white/blue, due to the bright lights in the background. However, the floating pathways are very dark. I'm also relying heavily on the portal color matching up with the locations.

For Reality Fracture, the pathways may form the faction's watermark. But I don't have any ideas on what the faction may be focused on.

https://preview.redd.it/txbwxj9enkxg1.png?width=840&format=png&auto=webp&s=5ad73235c723aa91dce97a026821d55813c77eec

Shattered Sanctum would then go to the black/red land. The Reality Fracture colors do seem to match better here.

As for what it means for the Reality Fracture faction, I have nothing. It does look like a potential watermark, but not oriented the right way for a text box.

https://preview.redd.it/dre3jgzznkxg1.png?width=680&format=png&auto=webp&s=9a4c09cf771b693db9c649ef076d70dcfff4e748

Stormcarved Coast is then forced to be the red/green location. This one is the weakest color combos for matching to a Reality Fracture location, especially since the artwork lacks almost any color (there's red cabling suspending the mannequins).

For Reality Fracture, it also offers intriguing possibilities. My belief is that it's artifact creature token generation -- it's an odd overlap, but I think it's possible for red/green. Another suggestion I've seen is that it's a martial arts school with training dummies, and the faction cares about fight or bite cards.

------------------------------------

TLDR:

  • Deathcap Glade -> green/white, probably graveyard
  • Sundown Pass -> white/blue, probably Books
  • Dreamroot Cascade -> blue/black, maybe with watermark
  • Shattered Sanctum -> black/red, maybe with watermark
  • Stormcarved Coast -> red/green, maybe golem making or fight

Any thoughts, disagreements, Reality Fracture speculation, etc? I don't think there's been a thread on this sub-reddit for speculating about these lands.
