Phone mic volume low, please help diagnose! (Sony Xperia 1 VI)

Alright, I'm not sure if this sub is the right place for this post, but reddit KEEPS recommending I repost here constantly, so after getting no traction in other subs I threw my hands up in the air and shouted fine. I apologise if this is off-topic for this place.

I recently bought 2 Xperia 1 VI phones - one for me, one for my dad. After a couple weeks of using them my dad complained that people have been telling him they can't hear him clearly. I took both phones and recorded a bunch of audio and video clips in different apps, and there is indeed a marked difference in volume between the two. Prior to testing, I reset all settings and preferences on both phones to ensure there wasn't something me or my dad messed with that was causing this. I also factory reset my dad's phone, logged out of his google account, and downloaded only the apps I needed to test (the Fossify voice recorder, and Facebook Messenger).

I've included the sample recordings in this Gdrive folder. The phone with the consistently lower volume is in subfolder 1m6a, the one with the normal volume is in 1m6b. All voice samples were recorded side by side, with the phones sitting on a table in a room with the windows closed and the a/c and PC switched, pressing the record button simultaneously and talking directly at them with my face equidistant from each phone. Any differences in duration is from not hitting stop at the same time.

Using FOSSify voice recorder in the system default settings, we can see that not only does phone A have lower volume, it also sounds muffled compared to phone B, which is at a normal volume and very clear.

Things get a little muddled when we start using the phone's cameras to record a video. While a video shot with the main camera continues this pattern, with phone A sound MUCH lower than phone B, a video shot with the selfie sounds about the same in phone A and phone B! This would suggest only one of the two mics is damaged.

However, when we use Facebook Messenger, which I included in the test as it was the app we first noticed problems with, things got even more confusing! The issues described below also persist when I'm using the app for voice or video calls. Of course, I just recorded and saved videos because they're easier to share here, but I tested each of these live as well. Selfie videos sounded lower on phone A than phone B, even though they sounded about the same with the Sony camera app. But when recording a voice message or a video with the main camera, there was also a very audible whine like of a whirring fan in the background on BOTH phones! Phone A was, again, lower volume than phone B. But I can't explain the whirring away as an issue with the Messenger app, as it's not an issue at all when recording with the selfie camera, on either phone!

I should mention I've run Sony's built-in diagnostics on phone A, and it didn't detect any problems with the microphones. I'm happy to run any other diagnostic tests you can suggest!

Please help me diagnose whether these issues are hardware problems with phone A, because I've already had both phones awhile and I'd need to move fast if I'm to make an ebay claim to return it! If anyone believes these might instead be software issues that can be fixed, please let me know as I'd love to save myself the hassle of returning it!

And finally if anyone can work out why videos shot with the selfie cam using the Sony camera sound about the same on both phones but don't on Facebook Messenger's camera, and why Messenger audio while not using the selfie camera is completely messed up, that would be a bonus but not my main concern.

Low light telephoto comparison 1m6

These were taken at night while I was feeding the neighbourhood strays. I had a headlamp on my forehead, but it wasn't very bright, barely lit up the ground in front of my feet so I wouldn't trip. I think it did make a difference though because with the flash alone the phone struggled to focus (see the last photo). The last 3 are the same cat and I'm really puzzled by how much colder the colours in the middle one are. I didn't change any settings apart from turning off the flash, but it made him look almost grey blue. His accurate colours are the brownish coat you see in the 3rd photo. I was astounded by how good the first one turned out, I've been used to the telephoto being as useful as a chocolate teapot in low life. Turns out if you have a light source it can take great shots!

Xperia 1 VI users: please share your battery usage!

My phone is still brand new and I assume the battery is settling, but it went from giving me 8 hours screen on time before dipping into stamina mode to half that a couple days ago, and I don't know what's up! I'm currently at 10% battery level with only 5 hours screen on time (spread over a day and a half admittedly, it's been an unusually light usage couple days), and this phone should be getting more, I need to figure out what's slurping all the juice! GSMArena's review said they were getting like 20+ hours of video playback, and I'm here dying after 5 hours of just SMS, discord, and facebook! https://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_1_vi-review-2699p3.php

Could you all please post a screenshot of your usage BY SUBSYSTEM, not by app, as in the screenshot below, so I can compare and see if any subsystem is drawing too much power on mine? You don't need to let it run all the way down to 10%, from full to 20-25% is fine.

Also, please tell me if you have any settings different from the default! For example, I have ambient display on, double tap to wake off, and the screen is limited to 60Hz instead of 120.

Thanks in advance, it would really help me troubleshoot this thing!

LTPO refresh rate on 1 VI

So I've searched through a lot of the old posts in the sub about the 1 VI's LTPO capabilities, and a lot of people were reporting that it goes down to 15Hz. However, I turned on frame tracking in developer options and I've never seen it go below 30, except once briefly. It's literally sitting on the desk next to me right now in sleep mode with just the always on display and it's at 30.

I've tried it at both 60 and 120Hz, and it made no difference. Is there any way I can make it drop lower? I'm trying to eke out every little bit of battery life out of this thing :D

How do I get rid of the SD card notification?

Spent hours copying hundreds of GB of lossless tunes onto my brand new SD card and I'm very excited to use good wired heaphones without a crappy adapter again, but I have a minor annoyance you might be able to help with:

https://preview.redd.it/n0re47vvsneh1.png?width=1061&format=png&auto=webp&s=ceb7d514bc9107b5dac5f795ef86c5758409865d

The notification for the SD card is ALWAYS THERE! 😆 If I dismiss it, it pops up again after an hour or so! Is there any way to get rid of it?

App transfer to a new Xperia phone

Hey all, I tried to use Google's own built-in set up process to transfer my apps and data from my old OnePlus Nord to my Xperia 1 VI, but although it copied over my accounts and contacts, it didn't copy over my apps. I tried again with OnePlus's Clone Phone app, but it seems to be designed only for copying stuff TO Oneplus phones, it won't give me the option to set the Xperia as the target phone to copy to. I downloaded a couple highly rated clone phone apps from the Play store, but they seem to only be able to back up every single app's APK to the cloud to download onto the new phone, which seems unnecessarily cumbersome!

Is there any app or method by which I can get my Xperia to automatically download every single app that's installed on my old OnePlus? I don't care about my user files (media, photos, etc), and I realise it won't transfer over app data, but if there's a way to copy every single app in one go it would save me hours of going through my old phone and redownloading each individual one.

1 VI: Do I need a screen protector?

Would you recommend a screen protector for the 1 VI? I normally don't bother but this damned thing looks so gorgeous I'd like to keep it pristine. Do people tend to go for the hard screen protectors or for the sticky film types? Any brand recommendations?

1 VI EC54 vs EC72 eSIM support?

I've seen conflicting things on different sites, so can someone please confirm if the below is correct?
- EC54: supports up to 1 nanoSIM, 1 eSIM, 1 microSD card. can't support 2 physical nanoSIMs

- EC72: supports up to 2 nanoSIM or 1 nanoSIM + 1 microSD card, can't support eSIM at all.

Did I get it right?

1 VI SD card slot speeds

Hi! Can someone tell me what sort of read/write speeds they're getting with their SD cards on the Xperia 1 VI? I want to buy one and don't want to splurge for a faster card than the phone can take advantage of! 😄

Anyone on LineageOS?

I'm considering buying the Xperia 1 VI, which is finally cheap enough that I can keep both my kidneys, and part of the appeal of it for me is that Sony is one of the few manufacturers left that let you unlock the bootloader and install custom ROMs. I've noticed that the 1 VI already has LineageOS support, which hopefully means I can still keep it current after security updates from Sony end next year.
People on LineageOS (especially on the 1 VI, but experience with other models also welcome), are you happy with it? How does it compare to the stock ROM in terms of speed, battery life, etc? Are you still able to install Sony's proprietary camera apps, to make best use of those lenses? Or are you stuck using Open Camera and only shooting through the primary lens?
