A male Orangutan showing off its awesome jaws, the second strongest among great apes

Stumbled upon a video featuring one of these adorable big guys yawning and figured that'd be worth an animal fact :p

At 3000-3300 newton (equal to 674-741 lbs of force, or 305-336 kg of force for non-'muricans), a male orangutan boasts enough jaw power to break open Macadamia seeds in one bite.

For reference (as per other studies listed here plus Dr. Brady Barr's documentary on bite forces), that's over three times stronger than humans (800 N at most) and relative to the bite force of a subadult lion (~3069 N) and an agitated smallish great white shark (~2971 N). Among great apes, it's second only to (unsurprisingly) the gorilla at ~4000-5000 N (900-1124 lbf and 407-509 kgf).

Is Kirimina the best ship? (art by mcnostril)

Source

I randomly stumbled upon this post (plus the source two seconds later) and, given that the sub recently reached +4000 members, it felt like the perfect opportunity and time and the perfect piece for a post like this one :p

We all love Kirimina but I figured we could use a post where we talk about why we love it, as well as other fun questions relating to it such as "is it the best MHA ship?" (we all know it is) and "where does it rank among your other favourite ships?"

The subtle glow-up from Randy Feltface's old puppet/s to the current one

I've wanted to show Randy some love for some time, especially since I feel like not enough people know about this hilarious purple puppet :p (plus I think subtle but effective changes and improvements in puppets are worth praising)

Originally (from 2005 to about the early 2010s), Randy didn't look bad in his simplicity but there was something off about him. He had an elongated egg-like head with eyes that stared into your soul and a mouth that bent weirdly, sometimes making it look like Randy had a beak or like Randy was biting his own lips all the time. These details seem odder in retrospect but even back then they seemed like slight oversights and unintended quirks in Randy's design (especially given the later tweaks).

There was a second puppet that kept many of these traits while also giving him a larger neck (making him look even turtle-ier than before) and a mouth that opened up very widely, while also making it look like Randy was either constantly disturbed or sad (or somewhere in between). There seems to have also been a third one with a more triangular head, a big chin and a mouth that still looked like it was biting its own lip (or making it look like he was mocking people without teeth).

The glow-up: Around 2015 Randy got himself a new and consistent look. The eyes were now looking in opposite directions, were made slightly bigger and were separated a little bit, his head was rounder, his mouth (which now resembled a confident and almost approachable smile), arms and hands were smoothed out so they were no longer oddly shaped (say goodbye to Randy's beak-mouth) and wrinkly, he was made thinner and was overall less disproportionate and seemed far more professional as far as puppets went.

The somewhat unhinged and aimless eyes add to his humourous style, befitting Randy's personality much better (and are arguably more well-suited for stand-up comedies, since while the old puppets looked straight at an individual the new one covers a wide area of an audience and implies a greater range of vision).

Additionally, at least as far as I've seen, Randy's new look was also allowed to look more dapper and was more versatile with the clothes he would sometimes put on (complementing his simple base design). His smaller body also meant he could move more crazily on stage.

The humanized designs for the Sketchbook and Tony the Clock from "Don't Hug Me I'm Scared", originally by aishaneko/kadabura

Back in early 2014, an artist by the name of aishaneko (currently known as kadabura) made a couple human redesigns for the first two antagonists of the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared series, and these spread like wildfire, becoming fan favourites among the community (including artists who would become big names later on plus some pretty kickass cosplayers). Other antagonists also received similar new looks via fan art but these two always remained the most popular, and you can see why.

  • Sketchbook: Originally a simple notepad with some additions here and there depending on the page, she retains her black puppet arms which are (along with her neck and legs) leaking the same black substance she dropped on Yellow Guy's clown painting. Her original paper face is turned into a completely pale face with striking lipstick and mascara and her one-off gag hair has become a long curly colourful mess. Her dress' skirt is composed of all the drawings and other visuals she uses for her song (as well as the "Green is not a creative colour" cross) and the veiny red underskirt and the yellow sparkles falling off it represent the heart covered in glitter by the main trio once the Sketchbook more or less makes them go insane. It encapsulates not just the original but also the original's point of being a symbol of creativity really well.
  • Tony: Originally a simple clock with yellow indices and red clock arms that randomly sprouts black arms (with gloves) and legs plus a bow tie and some cute red/yellow shoes, he retains the gloves and the bow tie but it's taken to the extreme by giving Tony a more gentlemanly look (some artists even depicting him with a sword), wearing a dark coat (that also echoes the universe seen when they're traveling through time and space, and over it there's a yellow sash based on the road Tony creates during that journey) and bordering on a somewhat authority-esque design that might reflect the power he holds over everything (since he represents time). Rather than being turned into a moustache as is often the case with anthropomorphic clocks, the clock arms are turned into a cool red face marking going over the bridge of the nose, and the yellow indices are cleverly turned into highlights in his hair (and most of his facial hair).

Both designs overall work really well, perfectly blending several elements from their respective songs and episodes to create these human redesigns. The originals are still identifiable in these humanized versions but they stand out on their own as well and are simply fun no matter the tone and scenario you depict them in. For me the best thing about these human designs was seeing all the different interpretations by all these artists, pieces ranging from semi-realistic to cartoony and from creepy to cute and sometimes with a little bit of both.

I meant to post this yesterday since June 19th is DHMIS Day but I figured today would be a good fit too, since the final entry in the series shows the 'time loop' being broken and the characters being allowed to move past that date and into June 20th :p

After nearly 20 years, these three horror icons are finally back together

Even though they aren't the exact same incarnations, I find it pretty cool to see the legendary titular trio that faced off in Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash back together in this game.

(for now, at least... hopefully they don't remove Freddy or Ash at some point xD)

^((wasn't sure how to flair this but I figured 'meme' fit this kind of image the most :p))

Jason Voorhees' launch skins in Dead By Daylight

Now, I know many people wanted the skins to be based on Jason Voorhees' various looks from the original Friday the 13th films and I get that, but I don't think these are bad enough to immediately dismiss them, especially since they're different enough but also quite inspired in the way they take notes from some of Jason's older looks (and considering how bland and weirdly clean the base 'Jason Universe' look is, I'd say these are an improvement tbh).

Why these designs are great: For one I think it's neat that they got the chance to be original and make new looks for Jason, a character who hasn't really had a wholly original look since Savini Jason in the 2017 game (and before that since at least the 2009 remake), and especially how these skins are more or less homages to those previous looks (and being fine replacements, assuming they can't get the rights to the looks from those movies, in my honest opinion) and still look pretty cool.

  • Backwoods Terror: This first skin clearly homages the Part II Jason's more "farm boy" look with the blue overalls, replaced with more bloodied suspenders + jeans (and a red shirt) but still giving off the same vibe. He's dirtier and messier and it helps convey the idea that this is a Jason that made this look on the fly (similar to the original Sackhead Jason, although he keeps his hockey mask here). There are bike chains all over his body, covering one of his forearms and partly serving as straps for his mask [which seems to be wooden based on its textures]. His unique weapon is an axe, one of Jason's primary weapons in canon alongside the machete, which is nice to see.
  • Death Forsaken: This skin homages Jason's first truly undead design from Jason Lives (with a little bit of Part VII), a rotting body carrying the same shovel (with lots of barbed wire, which has also replaced the straps for his mask) used to dig up his grave as a weapon, wearing white gloves and a red jacket with dark pants. His mask keeps the same stripes but with the unique addition of them being coloured green (same green as the rotting slime all over his body, which might be based on the brain juice that got squeezed out of Jason's head in Part VII when telekinetic Tina Shepard crushed his mask) and the whole mask being cracked (plus a subtle bloody handprint). Part of his right leg and left arm are skeletal to further indicate he's undead and you can also how his ripped shirt and jacket expose some of his ribs and vertebrae from both sides (one rib is even sticking out through his back).
  • Depths of Despair: This one seems quite clear as well but I believe is a mix of the two designs that followed Jason Lives (from Part VII and VIII, the New Blood and Jason Takes Manhattan respectively). The chain around his neck is a clear reference to Part VII (with the additions of rust and extra shackles), his mask is partly broken and scarred and there's gnarly red coral, barnacles and algae all over his greenish/blueish body implying that he's been chained not only underwater but also potentially to the bottom of the ocean, likely referencing his trip through the sea to Manhattan in Part VIII. The baggier clothing makes this Jason seem a bit more movie-accurate in that he looks stockier and buff ala Kane Hodder (actor who played Jasons through Parts VII to X), and he carries the iconic machete but with extra rust and marine life on it.

The Lifeform's size

Pretty random question I know, but this is a very minor little thing that piqued my curiosity, especially after seeing how in the Kane Pixels Backrooms wiki (not to be confused with the other Kane Pixels Backroom wiki) they say it's presumably 11 feet (3.3 m) tall.

I always thought it was only moderately taller than a man (especially based on the final shot in the first FF video where he grabs Kane Pixels), not taller than the average elephant so it made me curious and I was kinda wondering what height most people envisioned it as, or if Kane (or Async in-universe) gave it a confirmed height at all...

(especially now that the movie features a monster [a monster also credited as 'the Lifeform' iirc] that is "only" about 8 feet tall, and how the Backrooms' walls don't seem high enough to suggest an eleven foot tall creature could run and crawl around at least those corridors)

What do you think is the context behind this pic? (art by tourabu_neko aka maneki-neko aka fujifuji)

Dead source here (I originally found it here)

Since the original source, post and description are gone I figured I could also add a question to the pic, so folks can make their own headcanons on what's going on behind the scenes here :p

(This could also be flaired as a 'Discussion' post but the art was cute so I figured I'd flair the post after that)
