ELI5 How can stock photo sites like Alamy or GettyImages stay afloat?

Like there’s images from the 1930s, and I’m pretty sure the people who took those photos are dead. How the hell can Getty Images or Alamy charge a shitton of money for old photos??
How come anyone can claim an old photo is theirs and have it protected??
