Do you still stream albums you own on vinyl?

There’s something funny about owning an album on vinyl where you can sometimes think “nah, not gonna stream it, I’ll just wait until I can put the record on.”

Even if that means waiting until you’re home instead of just pressing play on your streaming platform.

Curious if other vinyl collectors do the same, or if owning an album actually makes you listen to it less on streaming?

What makes an artist become an all-time favorite for you?

There are artists we enjoy, and then there are artists whose music somehow becomes part of our lives. Maybe it’s a specific album, a particular period, the lyrics, their sound, or the memories attached to their music.

What makes that difference for you? What turns an artist you like into an artist you keep coming back to for years? What makes their music stick with you when so much other music eventually fades away?

Why are Japanese vinyl pressings so highly regarded?

Japanese pressings seem to have this almost legendary status among vinyl collectors.

People talk about them being incredibly quiet, really well made, carefully mastered… but how much of that is actually true?

A big part of it comes down to how the records were made.

Japanese pressing plants became known for very consistent manufacturing and tight quality control. Some Japanese vinyl formulations are also famous for their exceptionally low surface noise, JVC’s “Supervinyl” is probably the one most collectors will recognize.

But here’s the interesting bit: a quieter record doesn’t necessarily mean a better-sounding record!

A lot of Japanese editions of Western albums were cut from tapes supplied by the original labels, and these weren’t always the original master tapes. The Japanese mastering could also be different from the US or UK version.

So you can have a Japanese copy that sounds incredibly clean and quiet, while another pressing of the same album might still have the more interesting mastering.

That’s also why comparing pressings is such a rabbit hole.

JVC, Toshiba-EMI, CBS/Sony, King Records… Japanese plants built a pretty serious reputation for consistency and manufacturing quality, especially through the 70s and 80s.

Then you get into all the little differences between editions : inserts, catalogue numbers, artwork, mastering choices, packaging, OBI, etc.

So maybe “Japanese pressing = better pressing” is too simple.

What do you guys think? Do you own any Japanese pressings ?

Does anyone else here collect Haruomi Hosono (and related) records?

It feels like he doesn't get mentioned nearly enough outside Japan, despite how influential (and brilliant) he is.

Which Hosono album would you recommend to someone discovering his music for the first time?

Tropical Dandy would probably be the first recommendation here, but really curious to hear everyone's picks!

When you play a vinyl, do you listen to the whole album?

Do you usually let the record play from start to finish, or do you skip to specific tracks you like?

Always interesting to see how people actually listen to their records. Full album or straight to the favorites?
