Before You Start Retinal: The Order Matters More Than the Strength
With retinal, how much you use matters, but so does what you put down first. Starting retinal on an unprepared barrier means you take on more of the adjustment-period irritation than you need to.
This routine is for retinoid beginners, or skin that gets irritated easily by actives.
Step 1. Barrier Shield Serum
Brand D — Birch sap, panthenol, niacinamide
A layer applied before retinal. It can help slow absorption and reduce early irritation, though it's not a required step — depending on your skin, you can adjust the order or skip it.
Step 2. Mild Retinal Serum
[PM only] Brand M — Retinal 100ppm, madecassoside, cica
This is the step that actually drives turnover. If it's your first time, mix a small amount with the Step 3 cream to start, and go twice a week for the first 1-2 weeks before increasing frequency. Night use only — sunscreen the following morning is necessary.
Step 3. Barrier Moisturizing Cream
Brand A — Ceramide capsules
This step offsets the dryness and irritation that can come with retinal use. Enough hydration can make the adjustment period noticeably easier to get through.
Step 4. UV Shield Sunscreen
[AM only] Brand B — Rice extract 30%, grain fermented extracts
Retinoids don't directly cause photosensitivity, but during the adjustment period the skin barrier can thin and become more reactive, making it more vulnerable to UV. That's why sunscreen matters especially during this phase.
In short — you prep the barrier, drive turnover, keep it hydrated, and protect it from UV.
The exact order or how you combine these can shift depending on your skin, but all four roles need to be covered to get through the adjustment period comfortably.
