Crib that changes to toddler bed, or cot then single bed?

Little one is only 7wks, sleeps in a bassinet and we have a cosleeper crib.

Her room is tiny, but we're considering having a small single bed in there with a cot for when she moves in there and one of us needs to sleep in the room with her. The thought being when she gets older we just remove the cot and the bed will be hers

But there are a lot of cots that lower then later turn into a toddler bed.

Should we just opt for that and just sleep on a mattress on the floor if needed, or will she be able to transition to a single bed (with appropriate measures to keep her safe) in due time?

A nap before an appointment with my therapist feels like flossing before going to the dentist

FTM of colicky 6 week old that won't sleep unless it's on my chest, bonus pumping every 3 hours day and night because she has latching issues.

Have an appointment with a mental health psychologist at local maternity hospital and husband urged me to nap before going.

It felt like flossing for the first time in months before going to the dentist.

But then I couldn't get the car seat out the car when I got there and undid the nap in 15seconds flat.

Anyway. Just wanted to share.

App for pumping and freezing?

There doesn't seem to be a big one most use. FTM of 1 month old, finally have a supply enough to freeze. Would love a recommendation

Feels like pumping is hurting my mental health - help 🥲

I was raised and told all my life, and now too, that women who switch to formula 'give up', and that it's weak behaviour as a woman and mother - that you're deciding not to give your child the best. My husband is a doctor, I know this isn't objectively true - but it's so ingrained it's hard to shake.

My 3.5wk LO drinks about 150ml every 3hours, and has latch issues. The LC and midwife recommended a shield because her mouth is too small. It works sometimes, but when she's cranky he screams and wants milk in the bottle. So I have to pump. I've not been able to pump enough for spare/extra since I got her. She drinks it all (we do pace). After every feed I worry if I'll have milk and the time to pump before she's hungry and crying again.

This has cause major issues in my mental health and milk supply. I power pump and GP gave me meds for my supply, but I barely keep up.

To the problem - I HATE the hands free pump I have, but can't use the other too much due to mommy wrist. I feel panicky, upset in a way I can't describe, angry and dehumanised to the point that I have to stay distracted or I get physically and emotionally distressed.

I don't want to give up. But I feel like I'm breaking to keep my darling fed with the best I can provide. I'm not Christian anymore but it's so hard to override beliefs that women were made for this - so I have to, it's my duty. Especially when your mental health is brittle (I have bipolar type 2).

Help 😭 any advice or ideas will be so appreciated.

Lactation consultants are putting me off BFing... Am I the problem?

So LO is 3 weeks old and by now I've seen 4 lactation consultants. 3 in the hospital before I was even discharged.

I've been getting so much conflicting info, each one saying to disregard everyone else. A big off putting thing is also how aggressive some of them are. LO has trouble latching and they'll keep pushing her into my breast over and over while manhandling us both while she screams and cries because she's hungry and probably confused and a little scared.

I know they say I need to be tough and push through, but I've started pumping and bottle feeding and using a shield just to stop distressing her so and getting her to eat.

Am I being too soft, and they're right? I'm not a sensitive person, but it's so off putting how aggressive their tactics are while my newborn is screaming so badly she's getting hiccups and chin quivering.

Where to find a good nanny/night nurse to help with newborn?

Mom of a colicky little one. Husband works shifts and we have no family here. I'm considering an occasional night nurse or nanny to come for a few hours when I have appointments or just to catch up on sleep.

Where can I look for someone like that? Is there a website or maybe group anyone can recommend?

Appetite loss postpartum?

I was told by so many to brace for how hungry breastfeeding will make me but I've had the opposite. LO is 2.5 weeks and eating is tough.

I've never had issues with food or appetite before, usually more of an emotional eater, but the thought of food, seeing it and even chewing some foods is very off putting. Some I can't stomach and others I just eat robotically because I know I have to.

I've been drinking a lot of water, the occasional fruit smoothie (but been told that's giving LO gas so idk what now).

Anyone else have this issue?? Any advice or words of wisdom? Midwife and doc says it's odd, and encourages me to eat easy things like nuts and cheese.

Pumping because bub keeps falling asleep on the breast. Is it okay?

So bub is 1 week old and keeps falling asleep when I try to breastfeed. We're using a nipple shield because she's having trouble maintaining a latch without it.

We also have a damn heatwave, so awareness of intake and dehydration risk is important. She's having enough wet and dry nappies so far.

The issue is this - on the breast we can't measure how much she drinks. She'll often take a few drags then pass out, only to wake up shortly after rooting again.

So we've started pumping. This way we can measure what she's getting and be sure she's getting enough.

Is this okay? We're first time parents, it's been a rough week and we're desperate for advice or reassurance.

UPDATE: NIPT vs ultrasound - one says boy the other says girl

For those who asked for an update and for anyone who might have a similar situation.

TLDR is that our (35f FTM, 37m) baby's NIPT came back as boy. We were excited and picked a name, prepped, etc.

Then I just had an odd hunch during a routine visit and scan to ask them to just check what they could see. Our excellent OBs said that's female genitals. Cue panic.

Fast forward - she was born by elective C section Thursday. We had a Neonatologist and paeds endocrinologist ready who did a full check and ultrasound.

By all accounts - the is pure girl. The NIPT was wrong.

Our midwife had spoken to the lead geneticist in the country at the NIPT lab who said it's incredibly rare - but it can happen in the case of a vanishing twin or miscarriage just before the pregnancy. I suspect I had the latter as I had a sudden very heavy period a few weeks before I learned I was pregnant.

So that's it - the NIPT is near perfect, but it can get it wrong.

Absolute gardening idiot here - what are some low maintenance plants for our new home?

I can barely keep a cactus alive, but our new home has a tiny space for a garden in the front (photo 1), and a patch of grass in the back our cat has taken ownership of (photo 2).

We don't know jack about gardening, but we'd love something. I was thinking a bedding of Christmas roses, or maybe a small-is tree, but even walking around a garden centre we have no idea what to pick.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!! Before we just give up and do fake grass and a shed in the back and call it a day.

Help with itchy feet with bumps?

So I've had swelling in my hands and feet, but my feet and toes have been itching like mad.

Recently there's also little reddish bumps on my toes. Feels like I want to sand off my feet.

Would love any tips or advice!! 🙏🏻

Note: it is NOT on the soles of my feet or palms of my hands, so midwife and doc is happy it's not a crisis.

Prune juice for pregnancy constipation - 10/10

Doc put me on iron supplements and even at one pill every other day I went from one nr2 a day to bricked up.

Didn't want to try more pills for the constipation so decided to try prune juice as my midwife suggested.

Bought a fancy bottle of high quality thick prune juice at local supermarket. Instructions say 1 glass a day in the morning before food, a second at night if you feel you need it.

Yeah. I know why it now says 'be sure if you need that second glass'.

On the second day using it I can happily report the plumbing has been sufficiently ✨Flushed🌊.

10/10 would recommend. And be sure before you take that second glass a day.

Disclaimer, of course: this is anecdotal, but maybe give it a try before taking laxatives if you're already on a bunch of supplements (like me). Less pills is less side effects to manage. And as always listen to your doctor over strangers on the internet.

[WIP] How do I make the text pop?

Making this piece as a thank you to the research nurses and midwives that I've had the honour of meeting with my pregnancy. Not used to cross stitch, even less text, usually doing embroidery.

How can I make the text pop? I used dark green and deep yellow. Would a wreath or some shading work? I don't know, open to any advice!

I'm 29wks, 34 FTM. All's been good so far, we opted to do the nipt test earlier on and said we'll want to know the gender.

It said boy. We were so excited, had a baby shower recently, picking names and fixing the baby room.

Now today at 29wks the obstetrician says the ultrasound looks like a little girl to him.

He says it might be one of them is wrong - which is unlikely - or it's a bigger issue. He offered an amniocentesis, but says it won't change anything really.

We were so excited and happy and suddenly things feel uncertain and unclear. I don't know what to think.

Very open to any advice or wisdom right now.
