Built a simple invoice generating tool :)

One year ago I was searching for a simple invoice generating tool, since I didn't have that many invoices I didn't need a big tool, just something simple, free and with no ads and I couldn't find one at the time, so I built one.
I was using it for myself but then I decided to share it on the internet and after one year it is getting 1k monthly users who are generating invoices. Since it started getting users I have made some changes since launch and also added some features requested by users. Surprisingly this completely free project made me some money (I can now cover the domain bill : -) ) I just added a buy me a coffee button and people started donating, but since people started asking for an account feature (I ran a tally form for one month to get feedback from users) where they can store invoices, redownload them and more, I made a paid plan.
I feel a bit guilty because I made a paid version but I am still keeping the free version too, where you don't need to pay anything, no login, no hidden fees, no ads, nothing. If someone is really interested please check it out, let me know what you think and what features I should add!

Simple invoice generating tool :)

One year ago I made a simple totally free tool for invoices, since I couldn't find a good one for myself, now people are using it (1k users per month), since it grew a bit I made some changes to keep maintaining it, but the core idea is still 100% free for all users no matter what.

Keep doing your thing

It's Sunday and I just wanted to write something chill, since my morning is kinda slow and lazy. For the past few days I have been busy with other stuff so I forgot about social media a bit and yesterday I finally got some time to check what's going on and man, there are so many things happening. AI companies keep shipping new features, one of them is Claude just releasing Opus 4.8, indie hackers keep shipping new startups, one of my favorite indie hackers marclou shipped a new project (need to check it out to fully understand it), others are also doing new things and for a few seconds I felt lost in all of this... because right now I am not shipping as much as I was 3-4 months ago and I felt like I was falling behind but then I thought - no, I am doing my thing.
I am still working on my app when I have time, planning to launch on the App Store soon, still a lot of things to do but I won't polish it too much, I need to launch and see if it gets any traction. So that feeling of being behind disappeared quickly when I remembered what and why I'm doing this.

I totally understand others and that feeling that you are behind, not doing your maximum in this AI era, but the truth is that you don't have to keep up with everything, it feels this way because you are in the AI or tech bubble and it feels like everyone is doing the same, but reality is different, there is a HUGE % of people just using the internet like it was in 2010 :D so you are not lost or behind, trust me, just keep doing your thing and that's it ;)

Personal or business developer account?

Hello, I am thinking about which is better to use for an Apple Developer account, my personal Apple account or creating a separate business account. Right now I have both options available and I already completed all the required steps for the business account, but I am still unsure because I don’t want to just throw away $100.

What do you guys think? Which one are you using?

The main thing I’m considering is safety and long term stability, especially since I am using Expo.

Is using AI UGC for content breaking any laws or anything like that?

Hello, I have been building a B2C app for some time but for now, I am just building it in my free time and mostly for myself but recently I started thinking more seriously about how I could market it.

My first thought was to post short form content on TikTok and IG. I even had some ideas to film myself but then I discovered AI UGC, which is kind of crazy because it looks like a real person : D

The thing I am wondering about is whether that becomes misleading marketing, since the person isn’t real but is still “recommending” the app.

And if I do decide to go that route, what tools are currently the best for AI UGC? What strategy works better, building one consistent AI influencer or just making random videos about the app?

Don’t trust surveys

One year ago (1,3), I built a simple invoice generator and spent some time on social media trying to get users. Now it gets 1,000+ users every month. Since it was very basic, there was no account functionality. Instead of building it immediately I added a simple Tally form asking if accounts would be useful.

I ran the survey for a month and only few people said they might want an account feature. Other users were asking for different things. But since at least a few people mentioned it, I decided to build it anyway.

In two weeks, I got 50+ users creating accounts. Now I have around 65. Some users need certain features but are too lazy to ask for them. They either continue using the product without the feature or quietly start looking for alternatives. That’s why I don’t fully trust surveys. If you notice even 1–2 people asking for something and the feature isn’t too complicated, sometimes it’s worth just building it.

Is using AI UGC for your app is misleading marketing?

Hello, recently I have seen on social media, especially on X, that app builders are using AI UGC for marketing, they are just creating fake AI influencers that talk about the app and posting it on social media (most of the time TikTok) as a normal post. But I have a feeling that it is a bit misleading and can harm your product in the long run, what do you guys think about it? Is it worth it or not? I mean it is way way more easy to do than real videos but it also can break some laws.

Mixed feelings about building things with AI

Sometimes I feel like you can use AI to build something working and even get paying clients. Other times it feels fake. I think I could make something small, like a basic app and learn the fundamentals of architecture to write better prompts, but then I still end up feeling like it’s not real somehow.

Are you guys feeling the same way?

Fun fact. I made a simple tool for a local business that makes some money, but I still sometimes have that fake feeling.

Dont be fooled by the AI building hype

Since AI is doing a lot of the heavy work (coding), it has become much easier to ship products, whether its a saas, app or something else. But the reality is a bit different. Those AI building tools screaming that you can now build whatever you want are mostly good for personal projects, unless you actually know what you are doing. They work great for prototyping, speeding up development or helping real devs move faster.

Why am I saying this? About a year ago, I built a simple tool for a local business and I completely messed up the rls configuration. User data was exposed to other users and fixing it was an absolute nightmare. That experience forced me to start learning how everything actually works. Today, the app works correctly and I even have a paying client, which is great but back then it was shit.

Yes, if everything goes nice, AI helps you ship features faster. But when things break you better be ready for it and I am not talking about AI failing to implement something or seeing terminal errors. I am talking about situations where you are prompting AI without even understanding how the feature you asking for is supposed to work.

Its actually pretty easy to fix errors most of the time you just need to give the AI enough context and as much information as possible. AI today is much better at handling complex tasks than it was a year ago but you still need to understand what you are building and for what scale you are building it.

Dont get me wrong, I am not saying "dont build with AI" I am just saying you should be prepared for errors and have at least a simple plan for how the whole product should work, how the flow looks and how everything connects together. It will make your life way easier.

+ dont forget marketing : D
