2026 has been an unprecedented year for studio-record box office runs. Six studios have already seen their all-time worldwide box office records broken by 2026 releases:

Sony Pictures: Spider-Man: Brand New Day ($2.41B)*

Universal Pictures: The Odyssey ($1.67 billion)*

Lionsgate: Michael ($1.021 billion)

Amazon MGM Studios: Project Hail Mary ($684.4 million)

Focus Features: Obsession ($512.6 million)

A24: Backrooms ($396 million)

Ketchup Entertainment: Coyote Vs Acme ($59 Million)*

*Still playing in theatres

Edit: Forgot to add one more studio Ketchup Entertainment's Coyote Vs Acme which has also become the highest grossing film of all time for the studio.

Dune had a pretty good day at MTC1, to be expected because of IMAX demand (25% behind Odyssey first day of PLFs sales T-42 vs T-121, I think this is super solid). MTC2 was below average for first day of presales compared to the other TCs, but that is to be expected because of lack of IMAX (XD showings are relatively empty ~7% capacity for Friday compared to IMAX 24% capacity).

MTC3 had a way better start than I anticipated, even stronger than Oddy PLF sales, althought Dune probably will be more presales heavy than Nolan's blockbuster. It's about 19% ahead of Odyssey first day of PLF preview sales (T-121 vs T-42 !!)...65% ahead of Odyssey Friday first day of presales (mostly due to IMAX spillover though). I guess MTC3 is going to overindex like crazy because of 70MM theaters.

Note: Outside of Dolby and IMAX, most of the PLFs are relatively empty, will be curious to see how this affects standard tix sales whenever they go live. My theory would be standard tix don't see much movement until final 14 days, as capacity isn't an issue right now (outside of IMAX)
