Perhaps the next evolution for the Goldwing is to go hybrid.

I know we're still waiting for the definitive results for how reliable the DCT will be, but in the interest of keeping the Goldwing the King of Motorcycles perhaps hybrid is the way to go.

Remember that we're already using the starter as the reverse motor, so improving that would actually make navigating a parking lot easier. Of course, the main reason for hybrids is the ability to get away with a smaller Adkinson cycle engine, but I'm unsure if Honda will elect to go with that or to just make the Goldwing even more monstrously OP.

I also understand why Honda wouldn't want to bother with that, because fitting what is essentially a compact car's transmission between our legs is impressive enough. Squeezing yet another all-new transmission... Ooph. The same problem for any new engine they might consider, because I really have no idea how a flat-6 Adkinson would behave, especially at low gear/RPM.

Funny how nature always the one thing in the forest we needed to stay still.

Virtually all complaints about supermarket food quality in the developed world are false or fake.

Before you say it, yes there is the exception of what corporate and government health inspectors catch, but that has nothing to do with all the complaining going around especially on the internet where sensationalism and passive-aggressive fraud reign.

To start with an easy one: No one is putting growth hormones in milk. This stems from a misconception about what hormones are being used on what animals. Simply put, when a cow is scheduled to die, we no longer care about its long term health, but it is still worth a technician's time to give it a shot or two. An unknown number of ranchers will give steers trenbolone (YES the same steroid that all the superhero actors and pro athletes are on) in the months before slaughter, then cut off the supply the week before death to ensure none of it is in the blood. This method is FDA approved because it has zero effect on meat quality.

Complaints about ultra-processed foods are also nonsense. Namely because the term is meaningless because however you define it must include hotdogs but exclude pickles when both are centuries old methods of preserving foods. My wife says anything listed under a chemical name shouldn't be eaten, but that is also nonsense since a chemical name just means it hasn't become a consumer good and received a common name (I.E. sodium bicarbonate is a chemical substitute for yeast but has been used in private kitchens long enough to be called baking powder). Sodium benzote is one that gets a lot of hate, but it serves the same purpose as vinegar as something that is edible that kills germs. Sodium benzote also helps give pop its tang, and I bet you're glad they don't use vinegar for THAT.

Likewise, processed cheese is just cheddar with two chemicals added to solve cheddar's two problems. The first is that it molds quickly, so an anti-oxidant starves the mold of oxygen. The second is it becomes sticky burned mess when melted, so another chemical makes it flow better. Of course, this comes at the sacrifice of taste, hence why it's mostly served to children and their unrefined tastebuds. Nacho cheese goes further adding vitamin c to give it that smooth texture, but that's why I won't eat nachos because of that acidic taste. The cheese in Mac & Cheese is just dried cheddar ground to a powder.

The only real complaint about processed foods are the problems that exist in preserved foods in general: They got too much of random things used to preserve the food. Like salt and vinegar, which is used for pickling since most germs cannot live in brine.

Another myth is that name-brand milk is better than store-bought milk. This is just poor man's wine snobbery, because FDA rules are strict enough that there can be no difference between milk brands. What's really happening (and we know this because these are public corporations) is the off-brand milk is being sold at break-even prices to keep customers coming back every week. This logic applies to eggs and many other foods too, but some more complicated things like ready-made meals not so much.

One more recent one circulating is that beekeepers destroy hives to collect honey and have to filter out all the bee bodies. There are many people that claim to have seen videos of this and every last one of them is lying, It's not a misconception or a beekeeper mistake, it is a lie that is prosecutable under US defamation laws. In ancient days the hive (which was a special wicker basket called a skep) had to be destroyed to collect honey, but the beekeepers would put the bees in a new skep to keep things going. In the 19th century Reverend Dr. Langstroth invented a box/frame system where honeycomb hangs on frames like files in a filing cabinet and these frames can be removed, the honey harvested, and put back without interrupting the hive's operations. There's no way anyone saw a video of gross honey harvesting.

And of course all complaints about starving animals and factory farms are bull. The first is nonsense because a hungry animal doesn't even breed, let alone produce much food we can eat. The second is meaningless because farming methods do not change with size and the average single-family farm is a lot bigger than you think it is. The reality of these kinds of lies can be seen with an experience I had with an old woman who said she use to live next to an evil "factory farm," immediately admitted she never saw the inside to say if there was any bad practices, then said she'd steal their chickens because they'd get loose and she wouldn't return them.

I did meet one woman who let her animals starve, but this was part of a scheme to ensure her ex-boyfriend got all the blame for it. But this highlights that what is good for plant/animal's physical health is generally good for food production. We want them all the be big, strong, healthy... Then we eats them.

The only consumer complaint that is real is that most brands put too much added sugar in things. But... That's clearly an issue with what people want to buy, not the store's competency.

Why you shouldn't antagonize delivery drivers.

I've worked for a number of places delivering and have dealt with both the best and worst customers. The fact is usually the people who get angry at us are just fools.

The first one is there's a lot of videos here on Reddit about delivery drivers rough handling packages. The foolish part is literally everyone rough handles packages, including the many people who handled it outside your sight. Back when I was unloading trucks for UPS we were expected to move 15 packages a minute and the smalls were all in giant backs so it was a workout. At that pace we ain't looking to see if it's fragile, we're just tossing it on the conveyer belt. Also they're not secured on the truck and loads shift all the time, ergo if the package cannot survive falling off a shelf... It was packed wrong.

This is a frequent issue with us here at Fedex. One guy says he delivers a jar of Walmart pickles every week or two and for the longest time the stockers at Walmart would just put the pickles in a padded envelope so every month the driver would have to cleanup a broken pickle jar.

White glove delivery is a thing, but no major shipper offers it because no one wants to pay for it. I once had a long package that said "glass" and didn't fit on the shelf so I set it to the side where it wouldn't get squashed. Good I did that because the customer met me when I delivered and opened it immediately to reveal a priceless 200 year old musket.

I said "Oh my goodness! And that must have been rough handled by a dozen people on the way over here!"

But as for the bad customers we deal with they really are the worst because you have to go out of your way to complain to the driver directly. I had one guy who thought I was driving too fast in his driveway so he tried to hold me against my will and punched me when I started to shove him off (he was criminally charged and his address blacklisted).

I had another farm where the house was a quarter mile up the hill and there was construction equipment in the only place to turn around so I started leaving the packages by the gate. We later found out through a mutual friend that the lady of the house was trying to get hold of my boss and my personal cellphone numbers to complain (she failed).

Another guy sent complaints to Fedex explicitly threatening to kill me over things like the package being dusty. He was polite to my face, though. Now his address is also blacklisted and now he's blaming me and claiming to Dollar General employees he doesn't know why Fedex doesn't deliver to his house.

And general rule, corporate usually doesn't care if you don't like where the driver put the package. The only exception on my route is of a disabled lady who can't bend over to pick them up. But the lady who wants me to bring the packages inside so she can yell at me doesn't get her way. Also note you cannot fire your delivery driver because by Federal law anyone with a package addressed to a property is presumed invited onto said property.

Also back when I delivered for Pizza Hut we had one old lady scream at me for 10 minutes because a typo sent me to the wrong address and this surely had to be my fault. And surely the pizza I made is terrible (her family's embarrassment was visible).

Also at Pizza Hut we had one lady who'd order almost every day, take two bites, and leave the rest on the floor of her house. One time she tried to arbitrarily change her order after I delivered it, but that time I really was the guy who took down the order over the phone and I called her a liar to her face. She took the order and that was the end of it.

There's also an ex-factory owner that pretends to still own the factory (he laid off my father 20 years ago) who saw it fit to make up reasons to yell at me. Of course I straight up ignored him and there was literally nothing he could do.

I wonder how some people live half as long as they do...

But yeah, if your arch-nemesis is a delivery driver, you are likely... An idiot. Nothing to be gained at all.

How to find a certain rare book

I've been looking for a very specific book that was only in print briefly in 1947. It isn't digitized, it isn't on Amazon or Abebooks, and it isn't at any library (there are some phantom entries for this book but I guess they discarded said book years ago).

Where else can I look?

Strange Electrical Issue

I have a 1998 GL1500 and the electronics are a bit worn. Sticky buttons, burned out cassette tape motor, and hazard light button sheered off. The real problem is sometimes right I pull the break lever while in neutral to put it in gear, all power is lost. As in both dashboard and sparkplugs lose all power instantly. The stranger part is I can hook up my jumpstarter and it starts right up like there never was an issue and it only has this problem some of the time.

My first thought is loose battery connection, but why the strange trigger and why can't the stator keep the engine going? A bad fuse should cut power all the time. There is no ECU for this to be a software issue.

Mystery Electrical Problem

What happened is O'Reilly's gave me the wrong battery for my 1998 Goldwing and blew two fuses. I replaced those and checked the others and it runs fine now. The weird part is now the front speakers only speak quiet and the rear speakers not at all. The CB and radio work fine.

Is there just a switch in the wrong place or is there a fuse I don't know about?

Why don't plumbers want to replace my pipes?

The story is use and abuse from previous residents means our hot water pipe has very little pressure as it is full of silt from the river. We currently move hot water via hoses connected directly to the hot water tank.

I spoke to one handyman who was a friend of my Mom's and he gave us a quote then ghosted us. A plumber with a larger firm said he needed to talk to his boss before giving a quote, then simply never called us. Other plumbers just didn't return my calls. The construction company in town said they don't do residential projects.

It is a big project replacing yards of pipes and potentially cutting a hole in the floor to access them, but we can pay them and IDK why no one would want to do a sizeable residential repair.

I got a flip phone so that I will have one less face magnet

And it is almost an order of magnitude cheaper. A flipphone also has more on it than you think, like a basic weather app that only updates when you ask. You can also access the internet with a flipphone, but some things simply do not function. Like YouTube's sign-in page, because it is impossible to fill out the CaPatcha.

If you want to keep your smartphone, remember those "free" phones don't just come with the most expensive plan, but they have a high-interest lease of the phone baked into the final price. You should always buy your phone outright.

Quality Greaves/Bracers

Standard motorcycle knee/elbow pads have stainless steel plates which do perfectly well in a crash (voice of experience). The problem is they all seem to attach with velcrow and that stuff wears out with daily use. Does anyone know of any that buckles on and isn't made in a turdworld country? Most of the ones I looked at were either generic like the ones I have or are race gear and costs 700 bucks.

No, I ain't getting a dedicated motorcycle pants and I already have a jacket because this has to fit over a work uniform.

The gear needed needs to work once in a crash and work after a lifetime of daily use.

The tornado took a path starting on Highway 75 south of Sycamore and took an arcking path onto the old highway east of Sycamore (shown in last photo). I counted 7 houses and 1 wearhouse damaged, with 2 houses having missing roofs. Disaster relief of many sorts on scene, and no injuries are known. Tornado was seen as far away as Neodesha, and we're not sure if this is the same tornado reported seen outside Cherryvale.
