It’s the micro-expressions. It’s the way he sets his eyes. His posture, how he speaks. Everything contributes to a masterful performance in TV. They don’t even look like the same person, yet it’s one guy playing Hal Jordan. Absolutely amazing work.

I think Hal Jordan wants John to question him and disobey orders

I theorize that Hal knows how corrupt the Guardians are as an organization, and he wants to make sure John doesn’t immediately become their yes-man who does whatever they want in the galaxy. That’s what makes humans so risky a prospect for Lanterns. They tend to question orders from authority.
