JD’s Revenge

My first time seeing Glynn Turman.
Blaxploitation Syfy at its finest. My man goes from “simp to pimp” when he gets possessed by the spirit of a bad motherfucker.

The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey

I didnt see any advertisement for this show me and my wife only found it because Gail is in it and we love her in my house. So seeing Sam AND Walton in it made our day. Great show

Amber Riley

Want to see more of this beautiful woman on screen. She was THE only reason I watched Glee and was able to make it through any episode. I know she was nominated for an Emmy for her voice acting recently.

The Corner

Before The Wire there was The Corner. It came across my YouTube feed the other day and I completely forgot about this mini series from way back sat up and watched it all night. Made me remember how great of an actor Sean Nelson was at such a young age. The true story adapted from the book about this guys year spent wit a family in Baltimore.

If you have not seen it I highly recommend you do. If you liked The Wire you’ll like this show too. I think it’s only 6ep so about 6hrs.

It deals almost exclusively with addiction so be warned. I have a weird connection to the show because it resembles family members who I have lost. It’s filmed in a documentary style tht I really dig

Movie of the Week

Blankman

Damon Wayans and David Alan Grier star in a movie I always believed was spin on Handyman from In Living Color. Watching it reminds me of me and my brother pretending to be super hero’s and DBZ characters fighting while we watched cartoons.

They really nailed how it felt growing up and the feeling of wanting to be a superhero and making a difference 😅 helping granny and everything. And it’s the only time I actually liked Robin Givens in a movie for some reason I never realize it’s her until partly through 🤷🏿‍♂️

The Mighty Quinn

I was talking about this movie being one me and my brother watched religiously as kids and my wife tried to convince me it wasn’t real.FOUND IT ON TUBI. Showed it to her singing 🗣️”You ain’t seen nothing like the Mighty Quinn” through the whole thang 🤣. Now it’s just another movie I need to get a physical copy of 🤌🏿🤌🏿

Fathers

I get the vibe tht there aren’t many fathers in this sub or tht participate in it. Am I crazy or is tht not odd in a men’s sub? The topics discussed in here are rarely ever about day to day life being a Black man or family in general. the complete absence of any discussion about being a father being chief among them. Or am I trippin?

Movie of the Week

Atwone Fisher (2002)

Denzel’s first directed movie starring him and our introduction to Derek Luke.

Based on the autobiography “Finding Fish”. A story of a young Black man in the US Navy dealing with the trauma of childhood abandonment and abuse. Fish (played by Derek Luke) deals with his troubles the only way he knows how…with violence. Which leads to the meeting with Dr. Jerome Davenport, played by Denzel Washington, a Navy psychiatrist.

Through several sessions with Davenport we are shown Antwone’s life growing up in foster care and the lack of support and love he experiences. The lost of a childhood and friends that lead to him joining the military.

I’m not one to spoil a great story so I’ll just say it’s a great movie one tht I show my kids a recommend highly. The best Denzel directed movies. If you can read the book as well.

Musicals

My mom loved musicals and I grew up watching a lot of song and dance movies like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Little Shop of Horrors, Sound of Music and all things Shirley Temple. But I’ve noticed that there aren’t many new musicals I can’t think of the last new one I saw maybe yall could name some. Not cartoon remakes (little mermaid, etc. doesn’t count) and list your favorite musicals it’s Sweeney Todd for me my wife hears me singing A Little Priest once a month 🤣

Movie of the Day

Blade
Not only a favorite of mine but the movie with THE BEST intro of all time. I was pleasantly surprised to find out my youngest son is just as obsessed with the movie as I was. My dad took me to see it in the theaters when it came out and I’ve enjoyed it ever since.
