The Ruusan Reformation ultimately doomed the Jedi Order of Old

I have my issues with The Ruusan Reformation, not least of all because it said “hey let’s get rid of our military so that the next big crisis that comes along will hurt us!” But the other thing is, it forced the Jedi to become part of the Republic Government. One of the Reasons the Jedi were so effective in the pre-Ruusan era was because while they allied with the Republic and were technically members like any other planet, they were not party to the government. Several times in their history whenever the Republic acted poorly or did something horrible, the Jedi either threatened to leave or actually did, and that lit a fire under the government’s ass to do better. In other words, this system made sure the Jedi kept the Republic honest. However, as the Sith Wars occurred, the Jedi began ignoring some of the minor issues the Republic had, which was understandable given that an Empire that endorses slavery and desires galactic domination is a tad more pressing than some senators taking bribes. But the Ruusan Reformations changed the relationship. By subjecting them to government authority, the Jedi were forced to make compromises to their principles for political convenience, thus they ignored the increasingly blatant corruption in the Senate. In short, the Order Broke its rules on attachments by being attached to the Republic and refusing to fix it or fight against it, often acting as its enforcement arm. The Kaleesh-Huk War and the Mission of Gaalidran are perfect examples of this. Had the Jedi remained neutral and outside the Republic like in the past, they would have probably stopped the Separatist Crisis before it devolved into the Clone Wars.

Which Era of the Jedi Order is your Favorite and Why?

Me personally I like the Pre-Ruusan Jedi Order the Best, they were the perfect combination of the Prequel Era’s Structure and Centralization, while also allowing marriage and families like in Luke’s Jedi Order. That’s not to say either of the other two were bad or inferior, they both had their strengths (despite what many anti-Jedi pundits claim), I just see the Pre-Ruusan Old Jedi Order as the best of both Worlds.

I’m not a fan of the Unifying Force Philosophy of Vergere

I’ve read Traitor and I just don’t understand the love for Vergere’s philosophy. Aside from the fact from saying there is no Dark Side, she also tells him to embrace his pain, both of which sounds like something Palpatine or any other Sith would say. Those who defend the philosophy also seem to have forgotten what she first said; *“Everything I tell you is a lie”* so by her own admission, her entire philosophy is B.S. Now i don’t agree with the retcon in LOF of making her a secret Sith (in fact there’s a lot of LOF that I dislike), but i do appreciate that it shows how her philosophy, however well meaning it was, was shown to be twisted into making Jacen fall to the Dark Side. Saying that there is no Dark Side flies right into the face of Lucas’ clearly binary philosophy of the Force. It’s more moral relativism garbage that is picked up by edge lords who just want to be anti-heroes and trash talk noble orders like the Jedi.

I was born on the Outer Rim World of Corrino; my homeworld was in a constant state of unrest. Whether is was Zygerrian Slavers, or various Pirate fleets, or our world’s warlords fighting for dominance, it was a time of chaos. The Old Republic did nothing about it. The Jedi were a little better, but they couldn’t be there all the time. The Clone Wars, I thought, would change that….until a coalition of Warlords and won our planet’s autonomy and the Republic allowed them to remain in power as long as they supported the Republic. In other words, they were free to squabble among themselves and exploit the people as long as they supported the Republic in the war….when the Empire came, I was at first skeptical…but soon o saw the Empire crush the Warlords, I saw Imperial Stormtroopers and regular troops defeat warlords who had previously been thought to be invincible, I saw the empire in four laws in places where local law-enforcement was too scared to go to…. it inspired me to join the military… and that’s how I have come to be a Captain on a Cruiser to this day. The Empire has brought Order and Peace to my home world in a way that it has not seen in many centuries. I am forever grateful for them.
