When my parents leave on vacation and I'm house sitting, the house receives almost no spam calls. When they're home, they receive at least two spam call a day. What could cause that?

If they leave for a month, spam calls stop almost immediately, within a day or two of their departure. Happens every time they go on vacation, twice a year for 3 years now.

Their landline is super old, in the phonebook still, and in a ton of leaks related to my fathers old accounts, so spam calls aren't unexpected, but it's unusual that they stop almost entirely when they leave the country. The calls also aren't even good scam calls, like you'd expect if they were sophisticated enough to know someone wasn't home. Standard local number but caller ID is the number repeated or "UNKNOWN NAME".

Compromised accounts doesn't seem like a possibility, I'm in charge of all their passwords which are high quality and their laptop, which they use for work only. Their phones are fine, both Apple devices with no jailbreaks going on. Router is up to date but we do have a static IP that hasn't changed in like 20 years.

My one theory is that someone is tapped into the telecom system somewhere (not locally, but like a company level breach) and truly does see that no calls are being made or accepted. I don't use the landline, I don't answer any calls, no voicemail. But that just makes no sense, their entire MO is to just war dial so much that sometimes no scammers are even available if we do answer.

Two latex mattresses of the same density, but different thicknesses. Does the thicker mattress feel softer?

Say 12" vs 6" firm latex. Does the 12" feel softer to lay on? Does it change if you use 2x 6" mattresses?

I remember reading that but can't find it anymore.

Does this appear to be the start of a wart on my palm?

Hands are always so dry, as you can see. Tiny brown dots in the center of my palm, noticed them a week ago. I think there's a small/thin callus to the left of it. I started treating them as if they are a wart but I'm not sure. Only wart I ever had was on the bottom of my toe like 15 years ago.

If I create 1000 hard links at once, will that use lots of CPU?

I have a folder I need hard linked elsewhere, and there's 1000 files in it. If I use a wildcard to do them all at once, will my old/weak cpu take a hit, or is that an easy operation?

Edit: it was in fact instant. Thanks all

Anyone using rTorrent/ruTorrent? I want to know how to move an already completed file so that it keeps seeding after the move.

I'm so sure I did this in the past within ruTorrent but it was so long ago.

I accidentally downloaded the file to the wrong location, and it's far too large to just delete and redownload.

Do Samsung soundbars have a method for multiple custom preset settings?

Maybe through the app? Q800D, with TV and movies I use Adaptive, Voice Enhance ON, -6 Subwoofer, -6 Bass, +6 Center Channel (what the heck is with the bass on this thing?)

For music I use Standard, with no voice enhance and no change to any channels or subwoofer.

Huge pain to have to switch between them.

Bought a latex mattress months ago and had it placed on top of another mattress until I could go get a proper base for it. It's now way too firm for my liking, how do I get back to the softness while maintaining airflow under it?

It's 6in of firm (40 ILD), 2in of medium (30 ILD), 2in of soft (20 ILD). Bought it blind, no testing in store because the store was 4 hours away. They recommended this firmness for my height and weight (big fat guy).

The mattress I had placed it on top of was 6-8in thick, fairly firm. It was an incredibly cosy experience. Very soft on top, but with a good amount of support I thought, I sunk into the soft and medium layers almost completely. Much softer than advertised I thought (though I now know why), it was described as "medium firm". But I was very happy.

Well I finally got the proper base last week, a sturdy wooden slat frame, put it on top, and suddenly this is one of the hardest mattresses I've ever slept on. I feel like I'm barely sinking into the 2" soft layer at all, and I don't sleep well. I like to sleep on my side, and before I'd always stay in that position just because of how cradled I was. Now I wake up every couple hours and I'm on my stomach, arms dead asleep under my pillow (which is also now too thin for side sleeping). Before I felt incredibly cushioned, now it's like 1 step up from sleeping on a cement floor. If I lie on my side long enough my ribs start to hurt.

More layers is possible, but they won't fit in the 10" mattress cover that came with my mattress. Replace the 2" medium layer with soft maybe? Otherwise I'm looking at spending over $1000 for an extra 2" layer and a 12" mattress cover. If I knew that would work I'd go for it but now I'm worried it won't. I guess I could've put that old 6" mattress between this and the wooden base, but I already disposed of it, and I'd be worried about moisture getting trapped in there.

Simulated Wiimote pointing has such fine control when using relative input, but it's unusably sensitive without it. Any way to fix that I'm missing?

Letting it snap back to center would be nice in some games but it's a horrible experience because of how sensitive the pointer becomes. You'd think it would scale with the motion, 100% being all the way to the edge. But I probably get to 20-30% and the pointer hits the edge of the screen.

Windows Defender can't scan 7z archives. It attempts to do so but seems to hang seemingly infinitely. Is that normal?

Windows 11. 7z archive is 2GB and has 2 files in it, a .rvz ROM (Wii game) and a very small .txt file.

The scan starts but never finishes. Once extracted it takes literally 1 second for it to scan the files.

I'm certain I've scanned such archives before, what could be happening?

It does take an odd amount of time to extract the files, about 2 1/2 minutes just using Windows Explorer.

Can of Wilson Spider Out says "Do not apply as a space spray or broadcast application"

I've been going around the entire perimeter of my basement inside and the exposed foundation/windows outside, twice a year inside, once a month outdoors in the spring/summer/fall. I still see spiders but mostly dead or obviously dying spiders/ants/tiny beetles.
