I am 50 and assume I will retire at 65. I have a very good DB pension and a good salary. I am saving around $8K a year in. TFSA to supplement. Right now I am 65-35 VEQT - bond ETF. Is 15 years long enough to keep buying VEQT? I think I asked Claude and it said something like > 90% of 15 year periods the stock market was up so I assume so but I thought I would ask here anyway.

I prepared too much brine, did not use it and now it is sitting on my pot cooled. Can I put it in a mason jar for reheating and reuse in a week or two?

I may have time to cook ribs tomorrow low and slow on a charcoal bbq. How much time should I budget for ribs? Any tips re: brining, preparation, sauce, rub etc?

Before holidays I was counting calories quite closely but stopped during vacation just to relax. I didn’t fall off the bandwagon too much so that is not my issue. But it got me thinking about ways to monitor prof without strict counting. So my question is: how good of a heuristic is it to feel hungry at key moments like before going to sleep and at waking: I get that might lead to overeating but assuming a person can guard against that is that a useful guide to whether you are on a good calorie deficit?

It is my 50th in August and Inam struggling settling on what to do. On a regular year we would have a steak dinner and I would go out for beers with friends. I guess I am feeling some self -imposed pressure to do something bigger this year.

Part of the problem is that I moved away from the cities of my youth for my career and so my really best friends aren’t here. I have some friends and my local squash club and another group of guys I get together with through work but none of them are my really best friends and they are pretty different groups.

I could rent out the patio of the local bar and invite everyone. I could book two separate nights out with those groups and have a dinner with my family. I could really push my boundaries and invite everyone over here for some kind of barbecue. But I can’t settle. And I’m not really moved to do anything like a mid-life advent like a trip or anything. Maybe I should be doing that.

Things have turned out well for me so I feel like a lot of my desires are always met. I took a trip this year and last to hang out with two of my best friends so that really kind of checks that adventure box.

Just showed my kids the Karate Kid for the first time. What a great movie. I watched it so many times as a kid, it was a real joy to watch with them. I especially appreciated showing it to my son. I feel like a lot of cultural products are marketed with girls in mind now. Probably that is an overreaction to a male dominated bias of the past. It would be nice to find a balance I guess. And, wow, Elisabeth Shue is as beautiful as I remember.

The missus and I have a one-night getaway this Saturday. We live in KW, so we are thinking Lake Erie, Lake Huron, or Niagara. We love hiking and nice bed and breakfasts. Hit me with your suggestions! Thank you!

Our family had not embraced video games at all. I am 49, my wife is 45 and we have an 8 and 10 year old. We have no Xbox,PS2 , PlayStation, nothing.

I did play video games a fair bit as a kid. I was into Nintendo and Sega as well as PC games like King’s quest. For me, I guess puberty just destroyed all interest. I wanted to get a job, go to university and started win on sports (only average athleticism sadly).

I feel like I missed the switch where video games became a really big deal , especially for boys. I have no experience with like the headphones and the gaming stations and the simultaneous chatting.

But now my son has come home and learned about Minecraft at school and I gather it’s pretty popular.

So my real question is: should I learn how to get Minecraft on the iPad so my kids can play it here. Or is that Pandora’s box?

My kids have periodically bugged us about getting a Nintendo switch or play things like Roblox on the iPad , but it goes away pretty quickly. Right now my son is just wandering around the house doing pretend play as if he was in a Minecraft game.

So……what do I do here? Lol.

I have always prioritized research. My appointment is never actually been in the core department of my discipline but in things adjacent to it (e.g journalism) so I have always felt it a challenge to take what I know from my PhD and research and funnel that into the classroom.

This year I was asked to step into to take over for the political science department’s second year methods course. I put my heart and soul into that class. Still my rate my prof ratings were terrible.

Lots of complaints dealt with me being disorganized, not answering emails, and not posting slides.

I guess I am biased but in my own mind the class was organized well enough. I did change due dates for two assignments. I did not post slides until after and I drew a hard line about not telling students what was going to be on the exam or that they could not have a cheat sheet. In the end the grade distribution was perfectly normal and average although they completely bombed the final exam and an easy second major assignment and some easy participation grades saved them. IClickers were a constant source of aggravation.

I dont’t know. If I can’t get good ratings after pouring my heart and soul organizing a class when will I ever?
