FND recovery journal #3

It’s 10pm, my daughter is going to bed and I got a cold glass of sanpellegrino, it must be that time again!

Woke up on time today.

Had a bath and watched some YouTube

Walked to the train. My legs were cramping pretty bad but I did the usual - ignored it and just kept walking.

Got a seat on the train and read dragon ball z the whole way (dragon ball z kicks ass)

Had a few meetings at work today, and got a bunch of stuff done, can’t go into specifics.

At lunch I walked up and down Granville street, had some pretty bad symptoms at this time, mostly eye stuff and confusion / depersonalizations.

Went to the comic store and bought one of those huge berserk tomes for myself and a comic for my kid.

Got an Italian sandwitch, I ate half and saved half for
My wife.

Did a meditation and worked the rest of the day.

Left work a half hour late - already slipping into my old habits …

Meditated on the train and limped home.

Had diner with the family and read my girl her new comic, it had way to much dialogue and had to bail half way through. My wife read the end to her

Gave my daughter a bath and then we read dragon ball z together.

Gotta do my nighttime meditation and then it’s bedtime.

Kind of a boring day, but honestly boring is kinda nice.

Tips for meditation?

I suck at meditation, I am committed to improving but it’s super unnatural for me to just “do nothing”.

Does it get easier as you keep going?
Is it something one can even improve at ?

Photo of Mu because she always comes to meditate with me.

FND recovery journal #2

Back to work today,

I slept in, fuck it’s 10am I start work at 10am (at latest)

Get up to have a bath, the burning hot water helps my cramped up muscles, I have 2 a day.

Noticed I that I didn’t fall over when I got out of bed!

Start work,

Hand was cramping making work a bit difficult but I ignored it and just pushed through, it worked!

Got a short doctors telehealth appointment.

I tell her about my diagnosis, she tells me I need to start CBT asap. I book in with my friends councillor but he’s out of town until the end of the month.

Worked through lunch because I slept in so I wasn’t hungry and then took a break at 3 when I got what I was working on finished.

Took a walk.

Ran into my neighbour walking his dog and told him my crazy FND story, he told me that he had a similar episode when he was my age, no formal diagnosis but similar. He laughed and joked “I’m glad your just insane and not dieing”

We both laughed, he’s right.

I proceeded to walk to the shop at the edge of the park, I’m doing pretty good let’s see if i can push this and walk to the big stair case about 2km away.

I make it the 2km!
I push my luck.

I walk down the staircase (see attached picture) it’s around 100 steps.

I’m still doing ok by my vision is starting to tunnel. Ignore it.

“Fear is the mind killer” I think to myself

I proceed to walk about 3 more km up hill and off road.

Make it home and wrap up the work day when the family gets home from work / school.

Wife makes dinner and my kids throwing a fit, I give her a hug and it calms her down a bit

We all eat dinner.

Now I’m laying in bed watching rug rats reruns with my family and typing up this journal.

Going to have the second bath here soon and then maybe read the rest of one piece book 7.

I’m not “better” yet but I’m going to get better soon.

I refuse to give another inch, there are to many people that rely on me, both at home and at work.

This song hits a little bit different now

Recovery journal: week 1
About 3 months since first onset.

Was watching encanto with my wife and kid today and found this song just hits a bit different after FND. (See linked video)

I’m doing quite well on my recovery, I’m able to somewhat walk if I distract myself. I find focusing on a task or conversation helps.

Brain fog is still an issue, but it’s not so disabling, I’m not getting lost or forgetting if I took my pills etc, but I’m still not 100.

Don’t trust myself to drive yet, I drive a stick and if my right hand or leg goes out I’ll crash.

Been eating a lot better, not like a super strict diet but just a lot more veg and less dairy and sugar.

I’m forcing myself to go back into the studio even though they would allow me to work from home or take a leave. I take the train downtown and then hobble 4 blocks but it’s worth it be around other people. I find the chaos and having people around keeps my mind off disabling symptoms.

At lunch hours I leave and stumble around downtown, go look at comics or go to the library etc just to get some exercise and walking practice, I find after a half block or so it gets easier, it’s getting going that is the hard part.

Work has been pretty understanding though and that helps.

One of my mates referred me to his old psychologist today , I’m going to set something up with him as soon as he has an availability.

Trying to plan a visit to the sauna with the lads but it’s hard because they all got newborns so coordinating time to get together is tricky, unlikely we will actually make that work.

My wife is starting to fall apart, it’s been a lot on her, the ups and downs the trips to ER and it’s been hard on my daughter also.

I’m trying to take a more active role in parenting to give my wife some time to process things. I feel like emotionally I’m doing ok and physically can manage it.

I’m still unable to paint and that’s a bummer, it’s my usual form of meditation, but I’ll get there. Been doing the YouTube meditation.

This evening I was able to dance with my daughter again, I taught her the box step but since she’s 3 and I’m semi disabled we kind of just stumbled around laughed.

Hope to bring this momentum forwards into the next weeks and months.

How has FND shaped how you interact with your hobbies?

(38m)Hey guys, what sort of FND compatible hobbies do you have, or how have you changed your approach to existing hobbies?

A lot of my hobbies involve a lot of dexterity.

My main hobbies are:

When not flaring up:

Miniature painting

C++ programming

Composing music

Hiking

Going out with my daughter

When flaring up:

Reading manga

Playing video games usually with simple one stick controls (dynasty warriors mostly)

Shopping (retail therapy)

Watching the xfiles

Laying in my hammock in the park

Doomspiraling

Watching movies or reading books with my daughter

Wasting time on Reddit

What about you? What do you guys do for fun in your free time?

Grateful for FND diagnosis

Hey guys I just got diagnosed, in and out of the ER 3 times with an MRI as an out patient.

Numbness in the right side, limping, cognitive issues, ms hug like chest pain, kept thinking I was having strokes.

My family doctor got the mri back and told me I had demylenation, started googling and was convinced i had MS. The stress of it caused the symptoms of FND to flare up and I went back to the ER thinking I’m having another MS relapse.

Well the neurologist gets my results and says I don’t have MS. So I break down because I have no idea what is wrong with me.

The neurologist talked with me for like half an hour and at the end he gets me to cross my arms and shows me that when they are crossed the weakness disappears, then shows me mri that looks totally normal.

I’m still limping around the house and confused all the time, but knowing I’m not going to slowly lose my brain has been a pretty big relief.

Likely the stress from having 2 family members die in the last year and trying to just put my head down and work through it without any psychologist probally wasn’t the best idea and I’m paying for it now.

Hoping to beat this thing so I don’t have to keep explaining people that I forgot how to walk

Strange paintings in the neurology wing of the RCH

There is also a large mural on the ceiling but I didn’t take a photo of it because there were people sitting under it and I wanted to respect their privacy
