How and when did painters stop being a part of our pop culture, and did it happen in NYC as it did elsewhere?
There was an SNL skit about 10 years ago where a fervent Game of Thrones fan is quickly stumped on a quiz show by the question: "Name one living painter." I've been thinking about it a bit since because although I can name famous painters up to the days of maybe Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko and like to think of myself as an appreciator of the arts, I also can't name a single painter working today. Can name tons of filmmakers, television producers, musicians and writers, but not a single living painter. I don't think I'm alone in this either. If that gap is very common among people who tend to think of themselves as fans of the arts, how/when did it happen to all of us?
