Yes, I bought brown bananas on purpose. We live part time in HI and bananas here on the mainland make us sad. But I do still have a few recipes that call for them. These will become part of a buckwheat groats pancake recipe.

Taco Tuesday! Tried a new-to-me carne asada marinade & rub combo on the tri tip I smoked. Hand rolled Sonoran style flour tortillas. Mayacoba beans. Yes the rice has a weird sheen. All I had in the house was sticky rice. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Tastes fine. Just… um…shiny.

Wing night! Buttery marmite rubbed wings, homemade blue cheese dip, veggies, purchased buffalo sauce and a batch of crane melon agua fresca (not much of THAT left…)

Made a special Spanish influenced dinner for my daughter who is returning to nursing school… polenta frites with romesco sauce, a garbanzo bean chopped salad with sherry vinaigrette, garlic shrimp and a crusty whole grain boule, chocolate basque cheesecake.

Simpler tonight…we’re prepping for a party tomorrow. Leftover flatbreads from last Friday’s dinner, Egyptian style falafel made with dried split favas, Israeli chopped salad with za’atar, green tahini sauce, and Yemeni zhoug. These fresh flavors always amaze!

Sonoma County CA USA…Still trying to get comfortable with the Safeway savings app; USD $35.09

The app is infuriating. I think 25% of what they advertise from week to week is ‘unavailable.’ But if you stick to the loss leaders like all this rather expensive produce for $1/per piece it ultimately pays off. I do not buy prepared food; I buy ingredients. Anyway, on this shop they claim I saved $18.00. I’ll take it.

IV out of IV shops, Costco Warehouse Sonoma County CA; USD $34.88.

Only needed two food items, but they were essential.

II of IV grocery shops: local Sonoma County CA farm stand, Imwalle Gardens; USD $37.36.

A lot of beautiful local fruits and vegetables for very little money. (I shopped here years ago when my kids were young, but they close everyday @ 3:30 PM and I just couldn’t get there as a teacher these past 15 years. Now they’re back on my personal grocery circuit. Well worth it financially.) They don’t grow every last thing they sell, but they tell you exactly where everything comes from. Gorgeous heirloom tomatoes, pale green figs, & torpedo onions, plus more. I’m glad they caught the rather amusing mistake in the receipt; otherwise I might have needed a second mortgage! lol

I of IV grocery shops today; Sonoma County CA, Oliver’s local market senior discount day, USD $54.98

Yes those are some expensive melons, but worth it. The Crane melon is a locally grown heirloom we only see @ market for 5-6 weeks in late summer. It’s utterly delicious.

Trying to win at the Safeway app deals game…Sonoma County CA, USD $77.47

Managed to get the pack of two prime graded tri tip roasts down from $95 to $47. Also got 2 huge eggplants, 2 bell peppers, and 4 ears of corn for $1 each. You just can’t buy ANYTHING that is not in their sale app. They are a sneaky, creepy corporation. lol

Weekly local market restock @ Oliver’s, Sonoma County CA, USD $97.09

Mostly local dairy items, local meats on sale, vegetables also on sale, and bulk bin purchases to cut down on packaging (this week I got cornstarch & celery seeds).

August Costco warehouse run… trying my best not to return until September! Sonoma County CA; USD $167.46

The sunscreen & automatic dishwasher tablets skew the grocery cost higher in this shop.

Two large shops, the first at food discounter Grocery Outlet and the second at national supermarket chain Safeway, both in northern CA USA. USD/$96.81 and $105.27 respectively…

Very little fresh food in either shop, I like to buy that through my local market. Plus it is getting to be the time of year when everyone you encounter with a home garden offers you produce…Yes, please! I’ve been in my new home 18 months but had only partially organized my pantry. Thus all the canned tomato products, canned coconut milk, and dried pasta you see here. Several month’s supply. Making a very concerted effort to use the Safeway digital savings app to an advantage. Tedious, but it does lower prices if you are disciplined.

Best post op hack I’ve discovered yet…

I have nursed my hubs thru two THRs now, the first in January of 2023 and the second yesterday. And today I discovered one of my best recovery hacks yet! He has opted for anterior entries both times and medical ice bags really don’t do much for that incision site and all the adjacent swelling. So today I completely wiped down one of our river rafting personal size dry bags with sterile alcohol wipes and filled it with 4-5 lbs of ice from the corner market near our house. It’s comfy and drapey and COMPLETELY leak proof! And it really covers all of the potential hot spots at once.

Last minute pre-surgery grocery run… Sonoma County CA, USD $54.72

One stop at discount grocer Grocery Outlet, and another visit to locally owned Oliver’s Market. Really focused on my hubs surgery tomorrow. I have meals planned but it’s going to be almost 100 degrees all of the week, and with that plus the meds and the pain from the surgical site I think he might appreciate some little snacks and non-alcoholic beverages that aren’t just ice water.

Back on schedule for Oliver’s Market Senior Day; Sonoma County CA, USA… $110.84.

Yes, these groceries are expensive. We’re retired empty nesters in northern CA and we spend money on food rather than medicine. lol
Right now we’re replacing the hand soaps at the sinks in our new-ish condo, setting a little TP & paper towels aside while we figure out how we’re going to source plastic free stuff without a subscription, and getting ready for my hubs to have a major surgery (hip replacement) at the crack of dawn Monday morning. Yes we have a $20.00 fancy tomato habit. We spent 20+ years growing our own when we were raising kids. Now that’s not possible. Anyhow this run is full of high ticket items: low sugar jam, specialty olives; fancy cheeses; bamboo papergoods; twee (but also refillable) hand soaps. ~Sigh~ Go ahead & criticize, I can take it! xo
