Episode 5, WTF

I think I've lost all empathy for Niall. Why does he keep dating good women who don't deserve him? I don't believe he is bi, he is clearly not attracted to women. I wonder if Ava kept the baby, I don't think we see Niall's child in any of the previous wedding scenes. Maybe we will suddenly see his kid at the wedding in episode 6. I hate when writers do that, I think it's lazy writing. I honestly think it's weird that Ava herself is present at the wedding. If she did keep the baby, I hope she is with someone else who the child grows up with as a father.

And Ruben... honestly I don't expect nothing from him anymore besides being a super toxic man. It is so obvious that he would use Niall as a way to stalk Mona. That him being infertile will hurt his masculinity. That Niall, the horrible opportunist that he is, will suddenly want to be a father when it's clear he's not capable of it after he discoveres that Ruben is infertile, just to make him jealous. As if this baby is not going to be a person.

This show is getting more and more absurd. I hope Richard Gadd has a reasonable way to explain it all in the last episode. Could be that it's all part of Niall's book, could be the Fight club theory that I've seen a lot of posts about here. But if he leaves everything open without a good explanation, I'm going to be very disappointed. It's a good show, he better tie it all together at the end by explaining all the weird things that happened. I don't want another show with a finale that doesn't explain anything because having an open ending is "mysterious and artsy".

Edit: I want to also note that while conversion therapy is horrible and traumatizing and Niall is a victim of that too, he is still being selfish by choosing to be with Ava, even if he thinks he has to. We can acknowledge the pain and trauma of men who have gone through conversion therapy while also taking into account the hurt they cause women, who have to live with men that aren't attracted to them.

Just saw on Richard Gadd's story

A Scottish screening one of the episodes with the younger Ruben and Niall on their TV. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think this show is exactly a pub show 😂

After watching episode 4, I kind of understand the critics

I wouldn't call it torture p*rn like some critics did, but this episode was a bit too much for me. Also, as powerful as the hospital scene was, I hate it when writers use car accidents as a plot device. A few of my family members were involved in serious car accidents so it's very hard for me to watch.

Also, another r*pe scene. I get what Richard Gadd tried to do here, but I also have friends who are SA victims, so it was incredibly hard to watch as well.

I will continue watching the series until the end, but I have to say that I understand the criticism of it being too difficult to watch a lot more after episode 4.

TW: discussion of weight

Richard speaks to Men's Health UK about the physical transformation he had to undergo in order to portray Ruben. It's amazing to see how normal he looks as himself and how, well, not normal he looks as Ruben. He's an incredible actor.

Ep 3, oh my god

The whole testimony storyline was just crazy. Now I have to know how Niall and Alby ended up together. Also, I think this episode shows Alby as more complex, even if for most of it other characters are just talking about him. He is no longer the manipulative, almost cocky kid that thinks everyone is ready to be as comfortable with their sexuality as he is.

Also, WTF is wrong with Niall's mom? Why is she constantly trying to cause her son anxiety? Dammit lady, won't you understand that Ruben is dangerous to your son? Why is she pushing Niall into contact with Ruben every time? Doesn't she want her own son to be safe?

I need the next episode now! I get it that Gadd probably wouldn't have been able to create a series like this for Netflix and I feel that HBO is the right home for it but darn it, I wish I could just binge watch the whole thing.

Rotten Tomatoes score

It's not that rotten tomatoes is THE place film and TV reviews, but it does have a certain cultural significance. Half Man's score is 77% right now. Baby Reindeer was 99% pretty fast, if I remember correctly. It's true that Baby Reindeer was on Netflix and all the episodes were available to binge immediately, but I feel like people are being a bit harsh after only two episodes of Half Man. I get that it's much more intense for a lot of people than Baby Reindeer, but quality wise, it's on par with it. I don't get the 78% to be honest.

But I bought two leather bags for 139 bucks! The Coach one is as good as new! The Cynthia Rowley one is a little bit more beat up, but I couldn't say no to the color. They're both gorgeous.

In one episode (episode 2) you made me feel hopeful for for Niall for finding a healthy relationship with Alby, then scared when Ruben beat the crap out of him, then hopeful again when it was reavled that Niall is actually marrying Alby, then scared again when Ruben showed up.

Like, this episode was touching, even heartwarming, until Ruben got violent again. Also, I identified so much with Niall's anxiety (both when he was a student and at the wedding when his mother told him Ruben was on his way) that I got second hand anxiety.

Honestly, I thought I wouldn't be able to continue watching this show because of how violent it is, but now I'm emotionally invested.
