Flush or not to flush

Got a transmission service coming up for a DCT7 this week. Had the car for about 3 weeks, service was due at 70k but no documented evidence to suggest it’s had one, and millage is now 89k.

My question is, should I ask the garage to flush the transmission too before the new oil goes in?

I’m not sensing any slipping or delay or struggle in the changes.

Thanks!

Update: “no documented evidence”

Wiper recommendations

I have a Mercedes A-Class, and the wipers make that awful screeching sound when I use them, no matter how much screen wash I put on the windscreen first.

I don't know if this is just because they have become stiff in the heat, or if they are just cheap wipers from the previous owner.

Does anyone have any recommendations for wipers that don't do that in all conditions, and that might also be Rain-X friendly?

20 year old zip file with password

Hi everyone. Before I start, I just want to say I am massively impressed with the amount of knowledge and information that's been shared on this sub. Some of you guys are crazy clever.

Anyway, I'm in a bit of a situation where some of my academia is being challenged. I have proof from when I was at university that my findings are primary research and haven't been plagiarised, but I'll save you the long story.

These documents are stored in an encrypted zip file. Back before Dropbox and OneDrive, I would zip and encrypt my documents using WinZip and leave them on my university network drive, or span them across multiple floppy drives to take the work home.

Now, I can't for the life of me remember the password (I only started to standardise my passwords later on in life).

Here is where I am at:

  1. I have compiled a wordlist for John the Ripper.
  2. I've been using ChatGPT to help me build a user interface to try and utilise all of John the Ripper's switches and functions.
  3. I ran a test file, and it did successfully find the password from the wordlist, so I know the application works.

However, it can't seem to find the password for my actual zip file.

Is there an alternative or something else I can try to figure out the password?

For hardware, I have:
• An Intel-based machine with an NVIDIA 4070
• A MacBook Air with an M3 chip

Any support or guidance would be very much appreciated.

Display doesn’t sleep since 26.6

My iPhone 17 Pro display doesn't seem to dim and then lock automatically since upgrading to 26.6. Anybody else?

I'm not too bothered, but this isn't the only bug my phone has. It also has a connectivity issue with Bluetooth.

I've got to say, I'm looking forward to upgrading in September and getting rid of this damn thing.

Unpopular opinion

AirPod Pro 2s are better than 3s. Better fit, look better when in ear, better NC and better sound case when closing. The 3s’ case sounds tacky, like a Temu knockoff

Cheap shots at Windows and Windows users by YouTubers

I'm getting a bit fed up with these so called tech YouTubers who feel like they're an authority on tech or which operating system is better, and look down the soul selling noses at those who do, legitimately prefer Windows over other OSes especially since, someone like me has tried and used many of them and I still bounce back to Windows.

I’d share a link to the video but the Mods will get upset, but it’s one of the recent videos from Thinking Different, which frankly says it all about the host as a YouTuber.

Mercedes A Class W177, 2018 wing mirror plastic housing

I'm looking at buying the above car for my mum.

The driver-side (offside) wing mirror has some damage where some of the housing is actually broken. The colour-coded case around the wing mirror is perfectly fine; it's that black plastic trim that you see around the mirror itself - please see attached.

It looks like it's not just a case of pulling it off and clipping in a new one. That plastic is actually a housing behind the mirror that all the components making up the wing mirror are screwed or clipped into.

I wanted to know if somebody could tell me how much it might cost, parts and labour, to replace that part in the UK?

Amateur developer doesn't know his way around Xcode, has problems with iOS apps.

So I've been making some apps with Cursor for iOS, and they work really well. However, they all take an absolute age to get fired up.

I keep telling this to Cursor—I'm using Composer 2.5, by the way—that there's a massive delay before the app is ready, but it doesn't seem to be able to fix it.

Has anybody else experienced this, and what's the workaround?

One of the apps, rather, does not need to connect to any APIs or the cloud in any way; it's just a local photo viewer.

Bring back markup from share page on iOS

Years ago on iOS, you could take an image, tap share, and choose WhatsApp. You could then mark it up with text, lines, and drawings, which was great because you could share that edited image with as many people as you wanted (well 5 anyway).

However, they took that away. Now, you have to go directly into WhatsApp to mark up an image, and you cannot send it to multiple people at once. Instead, you have to choose one person, perform the mark-up, and then go back to select multiple people (I think it is limited to five now).

It just doesn't work well. I wish they would bring back the ability to mark up images and edit video lengths directly from the share screen on iOS.
