What is the nicest, least expected thing that happened, which made you love our city so much?

At Wat Thai: Earlier this year, I had the kanom krok lady find me to give me back some tokens. I over paid because I get mixed up with the token denominations (yellow, blue and pink). I was on the opposite end sitting and waiting for my bowl of noodles.

She came and gave me the tokens, counting them and sweetly giving me a math lesson (that went in one ear and out the other), sitting next to me. Then she wrapped her arm around mine, and squeezed my arm and patted me.

It was so out of place, and yet so familiar. It's exactly how women would treat me as a baby/small girl. I'm 53.

It was gentle, and doting and just so sweet.

Share to your experience, please? 😊🩷

I'd there a way to contact those who have "adopted" my great grandparents?

I could be wrong, completely.

My great grandparents immigrated to Hawai'i in 1904 from Korea to work the sugar cane plantations. Before Hawai'i was occupied by the United States.

I was shocked to see pictures of my great grandparent's headstones (not sure if this is the correct term). Our family settled on the mainland (Los Angeles, CA) in the 1950s. I wasn't born until 1973.

We never really spoke about family history. In fact, I didn't even know we had Korean ancestry until I was in my very late teens. And, I was stunned. I always thought we were Hawaiian. I was completely wrong, but that's the culture I grew up with in Los Angeles as a kid.

So when I saw the headstones in pictures taken by a "Bryan Chapman," I mentioned this in a writer's group. I was told that Morman adopt dead folks, and document information about them.

I would like to visit my grandparents' resting place, but have no idea where they are. So I was hoping to ask "Bryan Chapman."

I guess it doesn't really matter after all this time, but there's some yearning I can't put away.

Thank you. I apologize for rambling.

Angeleno parents of babies, would you allow strangers to hold your baby ?

My family is 6 generations deep here.

I don't recall ever being handed a baby, or having the courage to offer to hold a stranger's baby in instances where it would help.

I'm talking about all groups of people to be found in Los Angeles.

I recently returned from a vacation and saw the the sweetest interactions between strangers handing off babies, either to let momma eat or to soothe a bigger baby when its younger sibling was nursing.

I racked my brain and couldn't remember any instances of this happening here.

Does this happen here?

Are there any weekday matinee movie clubs?

A group of people who meet up to watch a film/movie around Glendale/Burbank/La Canada?

In the MoviePass heyday, I was going to see movies all the time. Then COVID, and I ended up subscribed to a couple streaming services and have only been to the theater a few times.

The last film I saw was the midnight showing Jackie Brown, last month.

I think before that it was Superman in 2025, and before that it was Wolverine and Deadpool.

Anyhow, I've been thinking about watching The Invite, either at Glendale's Look Cinema or NoHo's Leammle.

What are you spending your $10 IKEA Family coupon on before the end of the month?

For years I've just let it expire, but I am thinking of at least redeeming it for couple free items to donate to child care facility I volunteer with.

I remember one year we were gifted bath robe. Only one other person I know of regularly gets neat rewards, too.

Bob Baker Marionette Theatre. Go get yourself hired ! 🩷

Beautiful Angelenos looking for work, there's this amazing opportunity.

Best of luck neighbors.🩷

My disability and chronic pain means I can't work these positions. Little 70s kid in me wishes I could work there so much.

Help! Where are/were all those cute round chickens on Sunset?!?!

I don't know why I don't see them, or the large retainer walls anymore?

Back in the 90s and early 2000s, I would often take Sunset to UCLA or Thaitown and drive pass the mural of cute round chickens/chicks.

Now I take the 2 and exit Fletcher or Glendale to Hyperion and catch Sunset.

For the life of me, I can't recall where I would exit before and see that adorable mural?

I'm pretty sure it was Sunset, but I can't seem to find the area.

I was at Stories Books and Cafe, yesterday and thought maybe if I headed towards DTLA?

That whole area has disappeared for me.

Do you remember after school fights? 80s & 90s seemed like brawl city at some of the schools.

I remember at Peary Jr. High, I think this was 1987, there was a gorgeous set of twin girls who came from a family of boxers.

They were always so sweet to me. Then one afternoon I was walking to my after school club and saw hair flying into the air and heard sickening pounding sounds at a distance.

I guess I was always a little daydreamy because a classmate, who was usually so feminine and calm, ran up behind me and grasped my forearm and started pulling me towards the group of students and yelled,"Oh my God, T.... and T... are fighting the girls from PE!!! Let's GO!!!"

The school staff broke it up before my classmate could usher me there. Good thing, too, because all the most rowdy kids were there and I wasn't looking to get mixed up in that. Also, I didn't understand why we'd want to "GO."

Fights happened so often, you could feel it in the air when something was going to pop off.

The girl fights were so terrifying. They just jumped right to it and went for blood. The boy fights were mostly a weird dance with flared out arms and chins high in the air.

Peary Jr. High and Gardena High in the mid to late 80s and very early 90s.

I was just wondering if other LA schools had the same?

Where can I enjoy both delicious Son-in-law Eggs AND Morning Glory (with Korean/Japanese rice instead of Jasmine)?

In the 6 decades that I have lived here, I still haven't managed to find both.

Maybe I just haven't asked, because it could an off menu item? (Son-in-law Eggs)

327 S. Hoover St. apartment building... How/should I gain entry?

Should I? Probably not.

Back in the early 1980s I lived in this apartment, while attending Commonwealth Elementary. I had so many adventures in the building and neighborhood. Back then I would leave and walk with my friends ( other 10-12 year old girls) from my place to MacArthur Park and watch people fish, or go clothing shopping. We'd also go to the Lafayette Library, or hang out at the various places or go to the Carl's Junior and the Greek restaurant.

Sometimes we'd walk all the way to Bullocks, or bus it to May Co./Orbachs/the Original Farmers Market.

A lot of the time I would have friends over because my apartment had a swimming pool and pool room with a great pool table, pool sticks and everything.

It was such a fun time and great apartment!

Sometimes we'd get in the roof, which had no protective railing, and play or run around and chase each other while screaming like lunatics. I'm surprised none of us got hurt.

I know you can never go home again, but after several health scares and surgeries this year, I am feeling nostalgic.

How would I go about gaining entry?

I'm sure after 40plus years all the broken alley doors are fixed and all the other clever ways in my 54 year old body can't make those climbs anymore.

I might be in for disappointment if everything has been renovated.

I even contacted Belmont HS to see if I could borrow a copy of the yearbook from the 60s to see pictures of my mom and aunt. So I was thinking if I'm going to be in the area, maybe try to get into the building.

Any long time Angelenos ever do something like this? Wasus poignant and sweet, or devastating and destroyed your memories of the place?

Thank you for sharing, and for reading if you got this far.

How many of you still drive around without using Navigation of any sort?

What percentage, roughly,do you guys use navigation?

I'm so impressed by my 70/80+ year old relatives who get all around without any help.

I mostly don't either, unless going to a new place. Mostly I use Maps to scope out the parking situation and walking terrain.

Then I have good friends who engage navigation no matter where they're going. Even to the corner store real quick, which they've been to a million times as habit.

I try to avoid using Navigation to keep my memory sharp.

Where can I find fresh and delicious crack seed treats?

Growing up in the 70s and 80s our family would bring back the best crack seed candy from back home (Hawai'i).

Sometimes we'd find similar products in Los Angeles, but the "meat" would be dried out (too my taste/liking) or too sour.

I'm in Crescenta Valley, is heading down to Gardena/Torrance my only option? If, so where?

Thank you.

Ooooh my cheeks hurt and my mouth is watering just thinking about it!

New Beverly Cinema Seats?

How much will my 53 year old back hurt after watching a 2 hour movie?

I think the last time I was at the New Beverly Cinema was to watch the Anvil documentary when I was in my late 30s.

I'm asking because last week my partner (49) and I (53) wrecked our backs at the Moss Theater. And, that was about two hours.

I will pack a lumbar cushion, if I need to.

Thank you so much. 😊

Sears popcorn and candy

Did your grandma or mama work selling popcorn and/or candy at any of the SEARS locations in Los Angeles?

They were always such sweet ladies. My kid self had such a crush on them.

I remember that yummy popcorn scent, and the honey pecans.

I miss old LA. 🩷

Hope everyone has a spot in our city that soothes and settles your soul these days, even if only in memory.

Ugh, constant nagging thoughts of needing to "Pre Plan"... am I just marketing sucker?

I'm 53, born late '72. Mama passed when I was 29. Only sibling passed in 2013. Somewhere between pops passed... maybe 2010.

Never wanted my own child(ren), but absolutely loved my time as a middle school teacher.

Are we all thinking about making arrangements? Or, am I just easily sucked into marketing?

I do live close to and drive past some of the most beautiful Forrest Lawn Locations , so it's never far from my mind.

Also with the recent heart failure and sinus surgeries in the last 3 weeks, back to back I've been filling out Advance Directives, etc.

Should I just set up the final event/procedure and have that taken care of? What's everyone else doing?

I am very much leaning towards getting it done so I don't have to ponder about it. The only thing stopping me are very close friends saying I am too young to even think about it. But, death can happen anytime and at any age.

... I think I just convinced myself.

Now, how to make sure I don't get scammed? Because I'll be gone and who knows how a pre-paid package works? How do they even know if I pass away?

I might go to one of the meetings.

Anyone have experience with such a task?

Thanks all!

Sinus polyps removal surgery? Is this a thing for us?

I'm recovering from my sinus polyps removal surgery on Thursday.

I wonder if it's common for Gen Xers, or if I'm just the lucky one.

Hope you're all spending time enjoying your weekend. 🩷

How many times do you use your teabag?

I'm curious whether it's frugality, or flavor, how many times do you use your teabag?

I absolutely love the Steep Lemon Ginger tea bags, which I first discovered when I was hospitalized. It's so delicious, but sometimes too strong. By the second usage it's just perfect. I sometimes use it a third time, and the flavor is so subtle and smooth, but I fear the integrity of the bag breaking apart.

Would love to hear from others.

Did anyone else experience a great deal of acid reflux during the fires last year?

I have been cleaning out and came across two bottles of acid relief pills. I hadn't remembered them, and was briefly puzzled until I remembered that we had to order them because I was having the most crazy acid reflux last year.

By late February I didn't have any acid reflux at all.

I ate the same things, drank the same things and slept the same way.

Did anyone else experience something similar?

Especially if you had to evacuate?

We saw the fires, lost power and headed to a relatives home in Redondo Beach/Torrance area. Then it was acid reflux during naps, sleep, sitting, reclined.

I don't know the reasoning, but boy am I glad it went away.
