Creating a false busk? Please read for context!

Hiya! Please ignore my terrible stitching and the general abysmal quality of what you’re seeing - this is just the most basic of mock-ups I slapped together. I have never made a corset before, only a boned bodice that laced up at either side. I’m wanting to do a similar though not identical mock-up of this corset from the Vampire Diaries as I’ve been invited to a vampire ball. It’s not super formal so a corset top will be just fine.

My issue comes with a busk. I have severe scoliosis, which has given my torso significant deformity. I can hide it quite well and I still look great but it can definitely pose challenges here and there in learning to adapt clothes to my unusual form. I’m learning to change patterns around this, that’s not my current issue. The problem I have is a busk- it would be magnificent to have one, especially since i struggle to reach my back, and I really love the detail of the hooks/eyes. However, with my deformity, a portion of my sternum protrudes a little riiiight where my centre front sits, so right along the centre front seam where that busk would go. Not only does that mean a stiff strip will not sit flush against my torso, but any solid material pressed against that little bump is wickedly uncomfortable and I wouldn’t want to wear the thing longer than 2 minutes.

I poked around my sewing box and found these (not sure what they’re called, pants fasteners or large hook and eyes) and went about trying to use them to make a false busk. It should perform a similar function, although minus the structure the strip of a busk gives. I also can’t apply boning to the centre front the whole way, but I can place a half length bone from below my deformed spot and I tried this in the past and it was perfectly comfortable.

Anyway. Do you think this will look alright? Is it going to cause construction problems or mess with how it sits? Does anyone have other reccomendations? Thanks!

I want to get my partner a bday gift of a sylvanian family baby matching each of our vibes

Also I know the baby clothes aren’t that detailed but wondering if there’s any accessories you’d recommend o.o

So far I’m thinking maybe calico cat for him and squirrel for me? Idk it doesn’t feel quite on the money for him. He’s a sweetheart but very into punk culture. I am extroverted and a bit nuts and bite him constantly so squirrel sounds about right

I will be getting him other stuff too but I know he’d appreciate something sappy like this hehe

First try at a 40’s look. I made the garrison cap and skirt myself and ran into a fellow who totally outshined my mild historical accuracy 😂

The wind being thrown around by the planes did an absolute number on my hair!

I’m going to my first vamp ball! wanting to do a look inspired by TVD’s 1864 Katherine but I don’t know which one to make. I already have my fangs made from prior vampirism activities

The red/black would fit in more to the gothic atmosphere, though I love the pink/beige outfit more to be honest, I’m relatively confident I’ll be able to sew either of these in time for the event but i didn’t pick any of her more complex costumes for the sake of not having time to source the proper materials and draft a pattern.

I know my hair is a blonde/ginger colour I’m not sure if I’ll do anything with it yet. I can definitely get the curl pattern down easily tho!

Shipping trinitite into Australia?

Hiii! I’m really interested in purchasing some specimens of trinitite (I know it’s glass not a rock so I hope you don’t mind me asking here) one for myself and the other as a gift for my little brother ☺️ he’s a military and a war history nut and I know he’d love it.

I haven’t imported anything like this before so I am curious as to how it will go. Customs maybe doesn’t like me a lot because a silly teenage girl I imported something I didn’t know was illegal so I think they check my mail now. I am contacting ARPANSA which is our radiation authority in Australia to enquire but I’m curious if anyone has done this before or imported similar materials. Trinitite to my knowledge has negligible radiation nowadays so I would hope it’d be okay but Australian customs can be quite strict.

My first attempt at any kind of historical costuming please be nice! Vaguely inspired by a Tudor kirtle.

Definitely the most time consuming garment I’ve made so far! I made the pattern myself, boned bodice, lacing at either side under the armpits. I know there is a lot wrong with her but for my first try I’m so happy :) met a lot of wonderful people when I wore this on the weekend to the medieval faire and talked extensively to some super talented people and got some tips!

My first go at sewing a historical costume for this years faire (QLD Australia)

Here I am in my highly inaccurate, flawed and incomplete Tudor kirtle ☺️ I made the pattern myself, sewed and boned the corsetry, and made the headpiece too! Only thing I didn’t make was the blouse.

I was at a Renaissance faire on Saturday

This gen z girl around my age probably early twenties, she was in just like one of those cute ten faire outfits with a corset and a flowy skirt, came over to a lady I was talking to (who was in like I think German 15th century, fully accurate costuming) and said ‘slay diva it’s giving witch-core’ 😭 the poor lady in the period accurate clothing was just like 🫠 bro she was trying not to be mad

Gen z I’m one of you and I love you but read the room Broski 🥀

Also here’s the outfit I made! It is mediocre I am new to historical costuming, I know mine isn’t accurate either!

Im not exactly helping to dispute the urban legend in my city about the lady who goes around biting people 😭

Random nightlife photographer spotted my fangs and asked for a photo so I grabbed the random fella next to me to be victim ☺️

What should I put in my Victorian inspired vampire hunting hit?

I am typically the one biting men in dark alleyways, but recently I got a new sorting box for my makeup so my old makeup box, a medium sized wooden box, is not vacant. I was thinking about what to put in there and naturally my brain jumped to making a Victorian inspired vampire hunting kit. Now, I know the validity of these actually existing in the Victorian era is patchy and it was likely more a product of the 20th century romanticising the Victorian era, but hey! Would still be fun to make one. Here’s what I have on my list of things to include:
- extracted vampire fangs, not sure what purpose they would serve but I know how to make a relatively realistic looking tooth with thermoplastic
- rosary beads
- holy water bottle
- wooden stake
- dagger
- small mirror
- crucifix

I think that’s mostly it? I can’t really muster up any kind of realistic pistol with wooden bullets

The first two pictures are the one I’m currently working on and the second two are of the original estate I built back in October
