These babies are kept with mom and dad but now that they are fledgling I'm handling them for a few minutes a day to get them used to handling. I noticed this one has a weird toe. The parents have had babies in the past this is the first time one is born like this.
So i rescued some baby collard doves who had their next destroyed when it was brought down on a pallet at work. The babies were very young. Unfortunately one passed away but the other one is doing great and will be ready to start weaning soon.
I want to know what food and grit is best. For my Quakers parrots and Cockatiels i feed them plain dye free pellets, with seeds and lots of greens and veggies.
I know doves don't really eat greens but will a pelleted diet be good for them or just a regular seed diet? I tried to find something formulated for doves and pegions but they only seem to sell huge expensive bags. I have seen Hairssons bird pellets recommended.
I also saw that they need grit and saw a few recommendations for red mineral grit. I included a picture of the one i saw on Amazon. Any advice will be great as I'm new to owning a Dove.
These sweet babies unfortunately had their nest destroyed as they built it in a pallet that was brought down at work today. The driver and spotter never saw the nest. The moment i got to work i was just handed these two adorable guys. They haven't even opened their eyes yet.
They are eating well though. Thankfully I have experience raising baby birds and had formula already on hand as my Quaker parrots are currently raising babies as well.
In case anyone asks, no they cannot be taken to rehabber. Collard doves are invasive in my state and thus rehabers wont take them.
