Kyrocera Duraforce Pro 3 no charge/power after drop?

I have a Kyrocera Dura Force Pro 3, which for the past 5 years has been pretty indestructible, surviving many falls and other mishaps.

The other day I dropped it from hip height, which is a pretty minor event for this brick, it landed squarely on the back and shut off. I thought maybe it dislodged the (removable) battery so I took it out and reseated it. Won't turn on, and I don't get the usual red LED charging light when plugged in, or when on an inductive charging dock. Normal bootloader mode doesn't work either. It's completely inop. I've even seen water damaged ones still show a red LED charging light when they won't boot up.

Bought a new battery in case that got damaged, but still nothing.

I'm wondering has anyone pulled one of these apart and fixed it? The lack of a charging light seems to indicate the connection to the battery is severed. I don't know where to begin, but it looks like I can't make it any worse.

Unfortunately I'm on a trip and need a functional phone to do almost anything!

Personal toll transponder used, plate pass billed for one toll

I did a one day rental in Orlando, using my personal EZpass transponder for the myriad of small value tolls lurking on the local roads, my transponder paid a total of 6 of them during the day. Despite my transponder being clearly functional, Plate pass billed my card for a single $1.13 toll, plus (in my opinion) a rather inflated 785% of the toll to process it. (what a great business to be in with profit margins like that!!)

I'm wondering what I should do, I emailed them a copy of my transaction log and asking for details about where the $1.13 was recorded, but no reply. Is challenging the charge with my credit card company, providing the log as evidence the logical next step? My guess is there was a error with Florida's equipment that made it miss one toll on my EZpass, which is not a fault of mine. If the reader failed to read my transponder, and instead read the plate, I will reimburse them $1.13, but the exorbitant inconvenience fee attached to it greatly annoys me and I'm not interested in paying such an amount for something that was no fault of my own.

State taxes for pilot side gig?

I have a side gig doing flight instruction and airplane delivery for new owners. I am a full time van lifer and stay in many states throughout the year but my "home base" state on my ID is tax-free.

The jobs vary, but a typical one might look like this- travel and meet client in California to pick up his new aircraft. We land in Arizona for fuel. We then continue on and land in Texas where he has a hangar. I leave from there. I get paid on zelle after the job. We may or may not do additional training and practice landings at airports along the way.

Is there any state taxes to worry about for the states we landed at or flew over while doing training? And if so, how do I figure what state is owed how much, out of the flat date rate I am paid?

A pottery jug?

Wondering if I will have trouble bringing this 10" tall stoneware olive oil decanter through the check point? (I can take the metal tip off)

I've seen them take away a small, lightweight crescent wrench which seems rather harmless, so I'm worried about this hefty 3 pound ceramic bottle. It would be more dangerous in the hands of a homicidal maniac than a small wrench, which is verboten. (I'm not a homicidal maniac but I know they operate on the assumption that everyone wants to cause bodily violence given the chance). No, I'm not going through the trouble of packing and paying just to put this in the cargo hold.

Use Bilt for multiple mortgages?

I was recently turned on to Bilt, and I'm intrigued. I don't have a mortgage for a primary residence, but I do have two of them for rental properties. I also have a second mortgage on one of them, a HELOC. Is there any limit on how many (and what kind of) mortgages you can pay and get credits for when using this card?

How to handle an A&P shop that messed up?

I have been doing owner-assist condition inspections (annual) on my Experimental-Amateur Built for 20+ years. My long time mechanic, with 50 years experience and an airplane whisperer, retired. I went back to the same shop, but unknown to me it changed ownership, bought by a cargo operator, and all the old experienced mechanics are gone. Replaced with a group of young newly minted A&Ps who primarily work on the owner's fleet of Caravans, doing airframe repairs, brakes and tires, etc. I think there is one experienced guy there who knows piston engines, as the mechanic working with me went to him often with questions.

Anyway, after the annual, I went to do a runup on the IO-540 and had all kinds of low fuel pressure problems and fuel starvation issues at low RPM, which would go away when running the electric boost pump. I brought it back and told him to check his work on the gascolator/fuel filter, the only part of the fuel system he touched. He did, but I did not double check him, nor should I have to. He's the licensed A&P, I am not. The fuel pressure issues continued.

The consensus in the shop was that I needed a new fuel pump, which is an expensive and hard to find rotary vane model that I spent 6 hours tracking down the least expensive overhauled one I could find.

That was installed (backwards initially) and the problems continued. It ran fine above idle and with the boost pump at idle so I decided to just fly it 20 miles home and deal with the problem myself. I asked a few knowledgeable friends and was told it's likely got an air leak, probably in the gascolator. I pressurized the fuel system with the boost pump and mixture cut off and discovered fuel was coming out of the top of the gascolator bolt. The stat-o-seal washer was completely deteriorated. It sealed fine until it was disturbed when the A&P checked the bowl and filter. He had one opportunity to see this messed up seal the first time he put it back together, and definitely should have seen it the second time. The engine pump creates suction, and it was sucking in air, starving the engine of fuel at low RPMs. Running the boost pump creates positive pressure and pushes fuel past the leak, so no air. It makes sense that this was the root of the problem.

I paid for the inspection, but their inability to catch this $4 seal cost me:

8 days in the shop instead of 2, including over the weekend

A $2500 pump I didn't need and can't return

$200 in unnecessary rental car costs

2 days of lost paid flying over the weekend ($1800) since I could not get to my instruction client without my plane

Hours spent driving back and forth to the Aircraft Spruce warehouse to pickup cheap gaskets and O rings that were needed to complete the job but not stocked in the shop.

I have not brought any of this up with the shop manager, but I'm wondering how to proceed. I understand there is a lot of knowledge gained on the job for a new mechanic, just like with a new pilot. But I can't afford it being at my expense.

What would you do? Litigious people sue over less. This "mistake" over a $4 seal cost me a lot of time, money, and lost work opportunity.

12650 failed, 179 went through?

After someone spoofed my company's email and we got a deluge of rejected auto replies, I setup SPF, DKIM, and DMARC on our domain this week. We have Google workspace. Looking at the reports on a free online DMARC XML viewer, I see a whopping 12650 failed emails, going to one IP, which appears to be in Romania. Good, so something is working correctly. But right below that I see 179 emails (all sent to a google-owned IP) that we did not send, all passed strict SPF and DKIM checks.

How is that possible???

Bypass airport geofence forced pickup location?

I am trying to get picked up at an airport business. The stupid app keeps moving my pickup location to the passenger terminal, which is a really long walk away from the hangar I'm at. There is a public road here, even a restaurant. And I'm still unable to get the app to recognize that I'm not at the terminal.

Is there a way to tell the app to ignore the airport geofence and make the driver come to where I actually am? I even told the guy where to go and of cour he still went to the passenger terminal.

There should be a way to bypass that "feature" (bug) if you're not at the terminal...

DMARC failure emails

My small company (using Google workspace on our own domain) had a SPF record but no DKIM or DMARC. On Monday someone spoofed our bookings email and spammed a bunch of support inboxes companies mostly in Europe. We got a deluge of automatic responses saying the request was received, or was rejected for various reasons.

I set up a DKIM record and also enabled DMARC with a reject policy. I'm seeing a few hundred rejected emails in my daily DMARC logs.

But now instead of the auto responders, someone sent more spam today with our email but now I'm getting a ton of rejected emails back, with a body like:

..rejected due to a email security failure (DMARC failure). If you...

Does that mean our DMARC is working correctly? I'm guessing the recipient is protected from getting the spam, but is there any way to tell their server NOT to send a reject message back to me that fills up my mailbox? I'm now getting as many DMARC reject emails as I was getting before as auto responses or spam filter blocks. Which is equally annoying.

Touchless TSA hack for F9

Sometimes the touchless line is a time saver, and I like to have that available if needed. Here is an easy hack for accessing TSA touchless when flying F9:

Buy a refundable ticket on another airline for later in the same day as your F9 flight. Use that ticket to access the TSA Touchless line, then cancel it after clearing.

Delta is particularly good, you can cancel within 24 hours of purchase for a money refund, even when buying for same-day, despite what their official policy says about 7 days in advance. Or just buy a fully refundable ticket, those are always good for money back no matter when you cancel.

28% discount hack?

One of my corporate pilot friends wrote this, wonder if anyone has tried?

Doordash sells Southwest gift certificates for 10% off. Costco sells doordash gift certificates for 20% off.

By the gift certificates at Costco and then use doordash to buy your Southwest gift certificates. Bingo.

Somehow booked two flights with the same points! Will they cancel one?

Strange situation- my wife and I were both booking the same flight, we were planning to each use our own points. I was logged into my account on my computer, she THOUGHT she was logged into her account on her computer but actually was logged into mine.

I had 16680 points, the flight we were booking was 16000 points.

We both clicked "confirm" within a few seconds of each other. We both got unique PNR codes for our flights. But it appears we somehow used the same miles.

I see my PNR code as an upcoming flight on my account. She sees hers. On my RapidRewards activity, it shows only her PNR code as a redeemed flight. My miles balance is now 680, which would indicate the single rewards ticket.

I don't know how this could have happened, but it appears we both bought a flight using the same 16000 miles, out of my account.

Is WN going to audit this at some point? Would they cancel one of the tickets? Demand cash for the second one?

Fuel pressure/flow issues with hot IO540

I was helping out with a test flight in a new overhauled IO-540 normally aspirated engine. Everything in the engine and fuel delivery system is also freshly overhauled.

We were seeing something unusual, the engine was running hot, as it was a hot day and not fully broken in. As it continued to heat up, fuel pressure and flow was slowly decreasing, which made it run leaner and get even hotter. When we switched on the boost pump the pressure increased to normal, along with the fuel flow, dropping the temps.

Has anyone seen this happen before? It's a first for me and I've done a few new engine break-ins. We were thinking it's a vapor issue and the gascolator and/or engine driven pump need additional blast tubes and heat shields.

On the image, purple is pressure and yellow is flow. You can see the trend and then the change with the boost pump enabled.

Perkins Diesel fuel delivery troubleshooting?

I'm working on this old Perkins genset. Its hard-starting, and when it does fire up, it doesn't quite reach rated speed (should be about 61.5 Hz unloaded, but is only getting to about 58 Hz, 1740 RPM) and then the controller shuts it down for the underspeed condition. Raising the governor set screw doesn't have much effect, making me think it's not getting enough fuel. It ran for about 30 hours last summer during an actual outage and has been off since.

I'm planning to replace the fuel filter but I'm wondering if there could be a problem in the fuel injection servo. Any recommendations if that is it? I'm guessing it would have to be sent somewhere for overhaul.

Kitplane question - Buying/moving an EAB still in Phase 1

I ran into a question from one of my Glasair institution clients:

If a buyer purchases a flying Experimental-Amateur Built that has not yet completed the Phase I test period, and he wants to move it outside of the approved radius to complete the testing at his home base, is this possible and what is the process?

I'm guessing approval is needed from one, and maybe two FSDOs, if the buyer is taking it to a new region. Just wondering if anyone has done this with a kit and what your experience was.

CO sensor shutdown signal on Amerisun inverter genny... ground? DC?

I have a crappy 2500w Amerisun (powersmart) 2500w inverter out on a camping trip. It ingested a large amount of dust and died and after multiple attempts to clean the carb, I got an overnight amazon delivery and replaced it and the spark plug (which had carbonized dust lodged in the spark gap). The engine ran for an hour an then crapped out again with a CO FAIL error. Looking at the schematic below, I thought the CO sensor shorts that white wire to ground, interupting the spark. So I cut the white wire, but the engine still shuts down. Is there something else that needs to be on that white wire? A DC voltage? A specific resistance? It clearly wasn't just a simple ground dump. Unfortunately the manual does not get into the details of what this signal is. Does anyone know? Im RV camping and my 1200w of solar needs help running the AC all day in the 101F western Colorado desert!

Brokers and sellers- are planes difficult to sell currently?

I have sold two airplanes in the past 5 years, one was my own and the other was for one of my instruction clients. Both were fairly easy to sell. But I've been trying to sell another client airplane for a year now, and am having a real hard time with it. It's a bit unique, it's a Glasair III and he dropped around 270k into it, including an AC system and a beautiful panel with GTN-750xi and dual Dynon 10" screens and 290 hours SMOH. It's really pretty inside and a solid build. But it's a 1990 and the paint is rough and has some damage history. Also the builder decided not to install a heater for some reason.

I've dropped the price to 205k, which in my opinion and several other III owners is a good price for one so equipped. The only other IIIs currently listed is one with a more basic panel and 1300 hours SMOH that is asking 220k, and a Reno plane for 399k, but with mods like NOx injection for pylon racing, not really something for "normal" flying.

I've got two lowball offers, 100k and 125k, which are less than most 4 cylinder Glasair I/IIs on the market, let alone a 540-powered III with a great panel. As a comparison I scored my III off-market for 95k 5 years ago with low time but with a worthless tear-out panel, and that was a steal.

So for you brokers and sellers, are you having trouble moving airplanes in this market, especially oddball ones?

What's going on today that nearly every hotel is sold out?

I travel to DC often and haven't seen this, even on July 4. What the heck is happening on a random Wednesday in May that nearly every Hilton property in a 50 mile radius is sold out?? The few that aren't are extremely expensive.
