Update on the turtles in inappropriate enclosure, Bangladesh

https://www.reddit.com/r/turtle/s/7udp0cl20H

So I posted last week about these two turtles being kept in an inappropriate tank in my office. They belonged to a colleague (not in my immediate team). We are in Bangladesh where animals rights aren’t really a thing, and this sort of tank is considered normal.

I messaged my colleague earlier in the week to double check whether the turtles were hers and she said yes and that she had been planning to give them away. Apparently they were for her young daughter originally but she’d brought them into the office. I said I was concerned their tank was too small and I was surprised she immediately agreed. When I suggested releasing them, she was happy for me to do so.

With another colleague who recommended this particular location, I took them after work today to a nearby lake and we put them on the bank. They immediately raced down to the water and swam away. Apologies for the slightly crappy photos - I also got a video of the break for freedom but I’m unable to attach it to this post.

I know it’s generally frowned upon to release captive animals into the wild, but this really was the only option here. Otherwise it’s likely they
would have been passed around to different people who would have eventually got fed up with the responsibility, and who knows where they’d have ended up.

Hopefully they will be much happier in their new home.

Does anyone know where I can buy this seasoning? 🌶️ 🧄

I tried this recently in South Africa and it was honestly the best spice blend! I brought a jar home with me and I’ve been putting it on absolutely everything since I got back. BUT, now it’s run out and I’m truly gutted.

Does anyone know where I can restock? Preferably ordering online, but if there’s a shop somewhere in London selling this I’m happy to make the journey!

Advice needed on how to improve turtle set up

These turtles belong to a colleague and are kept in the office. I live and work in a country with pretty much zero animal welfare standards, so this sort of tank isn’t unusual.

I recognise this situation isn’t ideal and people here will undoubtedly have strong views; however, I would like to send my colleague some guidance from a reputable source on how to improve the condition of the turtles rather than just point her to a Reddit post with angry comments.

I’d be very grateful for any links on how to look after this species of turtle, how to set up an appropriate tank, what size / what to include in it etc. Going in angrily and defensively won’t work. Thanks!

ETA: we are in Bangladesh, and this isn’t nearly the worst case of animal suffering I’ve seen here. 😔

Aquarium in Bangladesh

This is a major tourist attraction in the coastal town of Cox’s Bazar. It’s shockingly awful. The red crabs were long dead and had maggots crawling out of them.

Vegan fisherman sandals

I have a real aversion to toes being on display, but want to wear sandals in the hot weather! As a compromise I’d love to get some fisherman sandals, like in the photo - does anyone have recommendations for where I can buy a decent quality vegan pair (women’s)? Thanks!

Turkish Airlines pet carrier

In December, I’m planning to travel from Bangladesh to the UK with this orange monster. Turkish Airlines looks to be the best option, as I’ll be able to take him in the cabin with me.

The specified carrier dimensions are 23 cm (height) x 30 cm (width) x 40 cm (length) and it must be soft-sided.

So far, I haven’t managed to find a carrier that meets these requirements - they’re significantly bigger than this. Does anyone know where I can buy one that’s suitable? Ideally, for delivery to the UK.

Thank you!

[GB] Best option for converting large amount of USD to GBP?

I’m a British citizen but working for the UN internationally, so my income is tax free.

I get paid in USD. Before I left the UK I opened a Revolut USD account (my main, personal account is GBP).

I’ve ended up accumulating a large amount of money in this account (more than 70k USD) which I know isn’t very wise to be holding in one place (and also conscious I’m losing out on growth).

I want to exchange some of this money to GBP so I can transfer it to my existing savings / investment accounts with other banks.

It’s currently 72 GBP to exchange 10k USD, so this will end up being expensive for the full amount.

Is opening a Revolut Ultra account a good option to avoid these fees? I see it also has fee free ATM withdrawals - is this for withdrawals internationally? I currently withdraw my monthly rent money in a third currency so this would be helpful.

If I sign up am I locked in for a year or can I cancel after making the exchange?

And will exchanging such a large amount cause any suspicion? Is it better to do in smaller amounts?

Apologies if these questions are basic but I’m feeling a bit stressed so have been putting this off.

Thank you!

Cause of death?

Came back from a trip away and two of my succulents on the office terrace have died, very dramatically! 😔

My colleague said it was extremely hot but to me it looks like they had too much water. I am in Bangladesh and we’re now in the start of the rainy season, so it’s humid and there are heavy downpours from time to time. What’s more likely to be the cause? Should I bring my other succulents indoors during this period? They were sheltered on a windowsill so have survived so far.

What are these circles in the landscape?

Hi, I recently flew out of Johannesburg to Addis and was intrigued by the landscape at the start of the journey. There were lots of large circles dotted about among the fields, in varying colours - brown, green, dark blue. I’m not from South Africa and this isn’t a familiar sight to me. Can anyone explain what they are?

I feel guilty for how this one turned out. It was such a sweet little cactus when I first got it, but apparently it didn’t enjoy the spot where I put it in my apartment - and by the time I realised, it was too late. :(

Now it’s outdoors and thriving again (at least, its head is).
