Geekd Con Needs to Step it Up

We go to Geekd con every year but this year we’re skipping it. Besides 80 booths selling the same 5 things, the lineup this year is horrendous. Who the fuck wants to meet some dudes who wore a mask in 8 different Scream movies. And the main draw was David Arquette??? And he cancelled. So now it’s McLovin and a bunch of other C listers. I know we’re not Dallas, but damn quality over quantity.

How long does med hold take?

My nephew got put in med hold for hurting his back. He’s been texting us every other day when we gets his phone to call anyone we can to get him out so he can come home. I’m retired AF, but I went through BMT in 2002 and back then the only people I knew in med hold tried to kill themselves and they ended up staying for months. What’s the process? I’d imagine they’d give him physical therapy and then decide to separate or send him back. Just trying to ease his parents minds. They keep asking me what’s happening.

If you don’t have a handicap sign or the person that it belongs to isn’t with you, then don’t park in the handicap parking spots.

I’m mostly talking about the people at Walmart on Airline that take up the handicap spots and even park in the hash lines that so people with ramps cant get out of their vehicle. Stop being lazy POS’s, park in a normal spot, and walk your ass to the store like the rest of us.

Can LSU students take classes through LSU Online?

Long story short my kid had a hold on his record because he had to change his major. He finally had it removed but now all the classes he needs are full. Is he able to take classes through LSU online? Thanks.

Need to find Apartment for Kid

I’ve got a kid at LSU (big surprise) and he’s about to start his sophomore year. Trying to find a 1 bedroom apartment for him in safe area that isn’t going to cost a ton of money. Hoping to stay under $1K, but willing to go up some for safety. The places we’ve seen online have great looking apartments, but then you read the reviews and you’d think they were in a third would country. Where are the legitimately decent priced, clean, and safe apartments in BR? Thanks.

Resume advice

I look at a lot of resumes. I look at them manually, there’s no ATS with Paycom. Sure you can filter on things, but for the most part a human looks at them.

Let me give some advice, if you’re going to use AI to write your resume or if you’re going to use the JD to write your summary at the top. Please make sure the rest of the resume (like your work history) matches the summary.

Don’t tell me you have experience using PowerBI or a system and then nowhere in your job history bullets do you show me how you used it. Straight to the not interested pile.

Recruiters, why do you look at my LinkedIn, see my job title, and then ask me if I’m interested in a role that is 3 levels lower?

Like you see it says Director, leading a team of 32 people. Why are you asking me if I’d be interested in a $65K a year IC position. Make it make sense.

I am the hiring manager for a remote company. Here are some tips to improve your chances of getting hired.

  1. Stop telling us the reason you applied to this job is because it’s remote. We know that, but it makes you seem like the work arrangement is more important to you than the actual responsibilities, team, or opportunity. We know it is, just don’t say it out loud.

  2. Wear something professional to the interview. Yes I know you’re at home, doesn’t mean you throw on your Sailor Moon hoodie and call it a day. Be presentable like you’re actually going in for an interview. Switch to gym shorts and a polo or blouse after you’re hired.

  3. Blur or change your background to something neutral. Your Star Wars Lego sets and one piece flag is great, I’ve got my Legos and Funko’s on display in my office, but my background is all about business.

  4. When you answer interview questions don’t read back your resume to me. Use the STAR method and tell me how you did your job better.

  5. Test your technology before the interview. Spending 10 minutes explaining how to unmute your mic and saying “can you hear me now?” Isn’t the first impression you want to make.

Any communication studies graduates in here? Can you tell me what jobs were you able to get after graduating and if you think the major was a good idea or that you did something different? Thanks!

So my son is a pretty good student has a 4.47 GPA 32 ACT and top 10 in his class. He applied to LSU and decided it wasn’t for him and picked Louisiana Tech instead because they were gonna give him more money for school I think LSU was going to give $3000 a year and Louisiana tech was offering 6500 a year.

He’s already told the previous admissions emails and phone calls that he wasn’t interested and yet they keep calling. I was wondering if anyone has had any success with getting their merit increased especially when it seems like they really want him to go to their school.

My son is 18 and a freshman in college. He gets some extra money to help pay for school and we give him an allowance of about $100 a week until the beginning of this last semester. He spends money like you wouldn’t believe. He eats out nearly almost every day and doesn’t use his meal swipes at the dining hall. The extra $500 he had on his meal card, that was gone in a month eating at campus restaurants. If he’s not eating out, he’ll go and buy comics, figurines, collectibles. There was $4K in his savings to pay for school and he spent it all. Nothing is left. Right now he has $4 to his name. I had his scholarship money changed to go to our bank account and we stuck it into an HYSA for him.

Next year he has to get an apartment and we’ve been telling him that he can’t keep spending money like this. I don’t know if it’s a mental health issue and coping or what. Looking for advice at this point because right now the only thing we’ve been doing is to give him his allowance to put gas in his car and that’s about it. And force him to go to the dining hall and use his meal swipes instead of eating out.

Every day I see a post about someone letting internet strangers know they make $180K plus thanks to their full time job and VA disability. Like who fucking cares, but everyone’s reply is the same. “That’s messed up, broken system, how can you work disabled.”

I know what the VA disability system is for, but your average American, no clue. Enough people complain and then someone has the wild idea to reduce benefits based on your income. Just be quiet for fucks sake.

I’m doing the Fargo half marathon next month and according to the course site, the course limit is 4 hours. For context I’m obese and have a lot of medical issues, but I’ve been training for this half marathon and feel pretty good. However, my time right now after running a 10K would give me a pace that is right near the cut off. If I end up going over the course time, will I be kicked off the course? Thanks.
