OBSESSION : Asian inspirations?

This post is for people who watched Obsession already.

As a big horror fan I truly enjoyed it but I’m curious what influenced Curry Barker. I know he mentioned Hereditary which makes total sense but I personally thought Obsession had a strong Asian horror vibe.

First of all the framing and minimal effects with characters in the background were anime / manga like. The use of shadow on Nikki, the way she’s completely a dark figure was reminiscent of horror manga and Japanese horror films. The stillness and shape in the dark effects reminded me of films like Pulse, Cure, The Grudge and Ringu.

Also story wise, the clumsy over shy young boy obsessed with a girl who’s a friend (usually a classmate) is typical of teen animes. And the “monkey paw” concept, used a lot in many western books or movies, bares ressemblance to Death Note with the main character desperation and emotional instability.

As for Western inspirations, the first thing that came to my mind was Smile mostly for the portrayal of Nikki and how unhinged she gets.

Curious to hear more thoughts about it.

Backrooms reminded me of that movie

Backrooms reminded me of the Julianne Moore film “Safe” by Todd Haynes (1995). The pastel suburban interiors are very reminiscent of the colors and furnitures in Backrooms.
