"Helping others and listening to their problems is scientifically proven to give mental health benefits in humans" is this true or there are exceptions?

Hi everyone! How is everything going?

I always asked myself this question when someone shared that type of advice, I don't mind helping others but I've met people who refuse to personally support or bet there for their loved ones in a moment of distress because according to them: "I have it worse".

Is true that having hard lives makes the process of helping others and get mental satisfaction for it harder?
