Some things never change…

….but we’re still making progress! :)

The Daily Telegraph, July 18, 1880
Editorial.

There is a violent prejudice against the bicycle. It is regarded by some as a nuisance, by others as the “Devil’s own invention,” and by all as a horrible innovation.

We take issue with this public sentiment, and assert without fear of successful contradiction, that the bicycle is an incubator of good morals and has hatched out better results than can be attributed to an equal amount of buggy-riding. No scandals are connected with tye bicycle, no suspicions attend its midnight uses. It has no cover to it like a top buggy, and no one presumes to charge the driver with taking a passenger on board surreptitiously. The bicyclist has all he can attend to without taking toll under covered bridges. Girls generally, are down on “the pesky thing.” It makes them hopping mad mad to foot it alone to school as the big boys glide gracefully by on two wheels. If this custom obtains they will certainly insist upon a dress reform that will enable them, if not outstrip, to at least catch up with the bicycle chaps.

No temperance advocate should denounce this ostracized vehicle. It is better than a Murphy movement. As a conveyance it will not tolerate mixed drinks. In former times the old family nag could be relied upon to tote a fellow home—no matter how much so—ever he might be elated, not so with the incorrigible bicycle. It wous just flop him in the mud, and no amount of tall kicking it in the side would compel it to stir. So all topers as well as girls, are down on bicycles.

But if you would unearth its greatest enemy, look uop an average hackman. They have no confidence in brain power. They maintain that a vehicle drawn by horses is safer than a conveyance propelled by a man. They preach the doctrine to the City Council, who, like themselves, have great faith in horse sense. To manifest their faith vy their works, they prohibited the use of vehicle on Michigan avenue and the boulevards. These smooth ways are reserved for gouty men in cushioned carriages. Here is a fit occasion for a riot—wheelbarrows, go-carts, street cars and locomotives. have guaranteed rights not awarded to the bicycle.

But fear not; there will be no bloodshed. The wheel-behind-the-wheel will prove a reformer. It will foster a race of strong men who will not always be crowded in the gutters and compelled to travel on back streets. Being a new thing, the bicycle must have its day of ridicule, of persecution, and of martyrs. When the world slow, the iron horse bade the people mount. They did. Kings loitered with their leveried coachmen and were left. So again, a thing of health, of economy, of grace, and of speed glides by the gout-producing conveyance of old paralytic aristocracy. He shakes with anger his crutch as the receding for, and demands of his dazed jockey;: “What is that?” The tardy reply is: “It is young Enterprise on a bicycle.”

You think you’re pushing a big gear

Chicago Tribune, May 18, 1941
Bakersfield, Cal., May 17 (AP).—Alfred Letourner of France, bettered the world paced bicycle speed record today, reaching 108.92 miles per hour, an event timed by the AAA. Alfred Letourner’s cycle is a Schwinn Paramount Racer. The large sprocket has 57 teeth, the rear, six, which gives a gear of 252 gear inches.

why are external bearing bottom braxket cups so shallow and short?

Hello, all, have had the threads ruined in a 68 mm threaded English bb in part due to the fact that the external bearing cups have such short thread penetration into the shell (and it part due to Toby at the LBS putting additional spacers where they shouldn’t be).

If you compare to a cartridge BB for example for the same shell, the thread penetration on those looks 2-3 times as deep.

Would anyone know why the thread penetration is so shallow for external bearing cups? (I have personal experience with Shimano Hollowtech and FSA and they’re both this way).

BB shell thread repair?

Probably a dumb question but feel compelled to ask:

Won’t bore with the details, but an LBS dummy first damaged the threads on the 68mm English threaded BB shell, then after tapping it out to Italian, ruined those threads too.

I like the frame, it’s a Giant 2-1 single speed aluminum 26” MTB frame with horizontal dropouts. Like BMX level of gusseting and stays. I don’t think anything similar is made by anyone now. It’s quite unique. So I’d like to keep it going.

Question is, what can be done. Assuming welding is out of the question as always with aluminum frame repairs?

Velo Orange have a square taper BB that goes in a shell of that size that doesn’t screw into the threads, but I believe the face of the shell needs to be tapered, so not keen on that idea.

** Would it be possible to do something unusual and gorilla glue an aluminum cylinder inside the shell, and tap it back out to English threading?

Shimano MT55 26" spokes

Hi, all, hoping someone can provide direction and advice. Have this wheelset on one of my commuters. Nice wheelset, like it. Have ridden it though many winters, in salt and slush, as a result the nipples are frozen.

They are completely true, no issue there. But one rear spoke is broken. Would like to at a minimum replace this one spoke, or have the rear wheel relaced.

Herein lies the issue. As I've come to understand, Shimano have a nasty habit of making unique nipples for many of their wheelsets. As can be seen in the pic, they are straight pull spokes.

I've searched the world over via the good old internet, and MT55 26" replacement spokes and nipples are not available anywhere. MT66 29" are available.

So, the question is, what can be done to replace at least 1 spoke with something else? Or a full relacing of all the spokes on the rear wheel? Can dtswiss or sapin spokes be made to work?

Back in the day even an LBS would have the ability to cut new spokes to length and thread the nipple end with a threading machine. Don't know if that is still possible out there nowadays?

Low pressure in tires result?

Hi, bike mechanics, have a question. Can enthusiastically lowering one’s tire pressure a bit too much, create a result as seen in these pictures? This thread from the casing is about 20 cm long. Tires are GP4k’s.

The result and the lower pressure happening at pretty much the same time leads me to think that it could be the reason. What do you think in your professional opinions?

Cargobiking on Norway's first bicycle express way

Norway's first bike highway opened yesterday. 13km of this standard along the car motorway. 4,5 meters wide, no car crossings, no pedestrias and no mopeds. Just awesome.

Cinelli Omnium

Y’all cargo haulers might like this one. Joint project of Cinelli and Omnium. But only 120 apparently will be made.

xbiking ain’t really a new thing

Can’t cross post from weirdwheels so doing it this way. Hope that’s OK and not a faux pas.

People been xbikin’ a long time :)

“The Beamish Museum's replica "hen-and-chickens" pentacycle, which Edward Burstow designed in 1882 as a mail delivery vehicle for the British post office, sits in the museum bike shop. It was meant to combine the penny-farthing bicycle's speed with higher stability and carrying capacity, but did not climb hills well or stop easily, and the driving wheel often came off the ground on rough roads. After trials in Horsham, the post office decided not to adopt the pentacycle. I was shown the replica pentacycle on a guided tour of the bike shop when I visited Beamish in September 2018.”

stupid question

Hope this kind of question is allowed here. Don’t want to upgrade to win 11, as my notebook apparently isn’t compatible despite the fact it’s a core i7. And am completely fed up with windows slowness. Etc. And am not in a corporate environment now (or I make my own), so no demands in that respect.

** How possible is it that in 1 day, I install Mint on my notebook, and move over all my files? **

Other than Office files, and web-based apps of various kinds, I don’t do anything special or unusual on it, no gaming or anything like that.

Dont want to get halfway into it and find out it’s not the cornucopia they say it is :)

Gravel was once professional transport

Stumbled across this by chance. Thought you all might appreciate it. Gravel bikes and riding it seems were an integral part of these guys’ profession.
