I heard the AMC series Orphan Black is one of the better shows from this century from a couple of friends. But the reviews I’ve read online are all over the place.
I just noticed it is on Netflix, but is leaving at the end of the month. It would be quite the commitment to binge, but one I could pull off. I watched the first episode and it was pretty wild. Without spoilng anything, is the show good enough to make said commitment?
I’ve heard Tatiana Maslani is irresistible and gives a career defining acting performance. Judging by the first episode, I can see how that could be the case.
Anybody wanna sell me on it? Otherwise I’d still love to hear what you all thought of the show. Cheers. ✌️
I used to think CC was a fun mode, though obviously flawed at times. Even though Scopely tries to force you to use full, mode specific teams there was still a bit of wiggle room to theory craft. Strategy that is so, so missing from the game and has been for years.
I can hardly stand to play it now. All those teams I sat and thought about, scrolling through my roster and trying to find ways to catch my opponent snoozing and win by sticking a toon that has a hidden passive they miss that synergizes with the rest. And I got frustrated by my opponents doing that to ME. But that was part of the fun.
I don’t use Marvel church for that reason, I want a challenge. It’s one thing to use it as a last resort or if you are a whale who needs every battle to be perfect. But what fun is it to use it for every fight and in every mode? What is fun about that? I came up with a couple stellar defenses over the years and now, not only am I put in rooms with opponents who have MASSIVE rosters compared to mine, every single team composition used against me is the exact same, every round. You’re telling me someone is brainstorming to come up with a team of yo yo, iron patriot, daimon and several others on their own? Cookie cutter gaming.
Yall can play the game the way you want. I just don’t get it. It makes the game even more mindless than it’s already become. Becomes nearly unplayable but maybe that’s what the big spenders want? Just disappointing.
**very minor spoiling here if you aren’t past season 2**
I had a ton of free time recently and started Fear before giving up on it. So I just decided to watch the first TWD season again. I watched the show when it aired new until about the ninth season and trailed off. Just for context, I think the first episode - the pilot - is the best episode of television ever made. There may be others that are better at certain things but that first foray into the world of the dead had everything. The acting, photography, quickly absorbing characters, intense narrative, direction, EVERYTHING. The entire first season is top tv. It’s my opinion that everything after that is wildly inconsistent; there were sections of seasons that just droned on with soap opera drama with multiple utterly mind blowing episodes interspersed throughout. I may try and watch the last few seasons some time but it really soured for me after Negan showed up.
ANYWAYS, sorry lol, but I recall joking with friends back during its original run about how when there was an episode where T Dog had more than three minutes screen time, probably meant he would get killed off soon. Ya know, the token black guy getting offed like sometimes seemed to be the case in old horror movies? But jeez, I just finished the fourth episode of season 3 and really, they fucked over this character imo. I actually find him interesting, when we first meet him he’s being berated by a Nazi(Merle) and him dropping the key to Merle’s handcuffs was a clever way to draw friction. But after that, he’s just background noise. He hurts his arm, gets an infection, smokes a joint with Dale and that’s it. His last episode, the writers finally throw him a bone(see what I did there?) and he sticks up for the prisoners’ lives in the face of the group basically wanting to kill them. He’s got heart, almost like they threw that in there as an apology or something because he then randomly gets bit from behind and gives his life to save Carol. What a waste, man. It really just seems like they used him as a caricature even naming him T-Dog is almost insulting. I mean, it is to me anyways. I’m not offended or anything like that, I just think in a season of great writing, they botched his character.
I apologize if this is talked about a lot here, I’m new to the sub. I hadn’t planned to watch beyond the first season on this rewatch but find myself continuing to turn it on when I plop on the couch. I am enjoying it quite a bit and it’s a trip down memory lane. But it’s also a reminder of how much it eventually falls in quality and is kind of a shame. Especially considering how bad Fear was, even the “good” seasons of that are nowhere near as good as even the weaker earlier episodes of TWD. I didn’t read the comics, is T Dog represented the same way in those? And does anybody think I’m wrong about his character?
I’d love to hear about differing opinion. Thanks for reading this far! Just had to get that off my chest. 🥴
Sorry if this has been talked about here before, new to the sub. But for some reason those Daily Show episodes from back around the time when he came back to the desk have been popping up in my feed, and I watched a few to see how they held up with my new perspective two years or so later…
Holy cow, the first thing I noticed is how much more pale and tired he looked; at least compared to the videos and episodes I’ve been watching recently. I don’t watch full episodes of his podcast most of the time but I catch clips such as his dance with Fetterman this week. He’s got color, is sharp and even though on his podcast he doesn’t have the make up and suit like on TDS, he still looks great imo. But jeez, especially the one after the Biden debate and the couple directly after the 2024 Kamala loss he looks almost sick. Don’t get me wrong, he’s certainly not gross and I must not have been paying attention back then cuz I didn’t notice it first time around…and dear god, OBVIOUSLY he had and has great reason to be depressed or sad. But I looked at two stills, one from the end of him eulogizing his dog and the other from his show about how “this isn’t forever” and he looks about the same. Kind of shocked I didn’t notice it back then, but I guess it just makes me appreciate him more. He didn’t HAVE to come back, and clearly he wasn’t having a good time. But he did it and felt it was important to not only be a voice in this moment, but to also sign an extension to continue doing that.
And by the way, those monologues still are biting and accurate. Good on ya, Jon! ❤️
(I tried posting the two stills I referenced but for some reason couldn’t get it to work. Not sure why but the vids are easy to find if you want)
Just a quick, simple question; is Mikkleson and his accent hard for anybody else to understand?
Just started watching last week when it was added to Netflix and I had heard good things. And it is pretty intoxicating from the start(I am only up to the tenth episode so far). But I have had to turn on subtitles because I literally had to keep backing up to try and understand Lecter’s words. I would ask if it’s possibly Netflix sound issues but I have no problem hearing anyone else. 🤷♂️
Wanna know if it’s just me. He’s a great actor, but I’d never seen him in anything in English before this so…?
I have a lot to say but will try and pare it down to not get too wordy, bear with me…
Advertisements have gotten way out of control. Yes, I assume most here agree with that as it’s pretty hard to miss. But the thing is, I keep telling myself that it can’t get much worse…yet they find new ways to annoy me nearly every time I interact with the world in any way whatsoever.
Get gas for your car? Fuck you, while it’s filling the tank you get to sit here and be blasted with credit card and car wash ads at max volume.
Getting your mail? Fuck you, here’s a shitload of fliers for things you not only don’t need/want, but can’t afford in the first place.
Watching a two minute video on YouTube/social media? Here’s a 30 second at to watch first, but we’re being nice to allow you to skip after 10 seconds. But don’t worry, more ads to come right in the MIDDLE of your video. But it’s a compromise, ok? Well fuck you, now we’re sticking ads at the END of your video too that play whether you want it to or not. And for one more blaring red FUCK YOU, now you will gets ads when you PAUSE THE FUCKING VIDEO. That’s right, we’ll put a massive ad over the comments and the rest of your feed when paused because even when you aren’t engaging we need to shove that down your throat.
I could go on. My parents get after me because I no longer check the mail regularly at our apartment building. But why would I? It’s always either bills I’ve already received in digital form or the mailbox is filled with offers for cheap windows or landscaping…at my RENTED apartment. Last year I started receiving a massive booklet of coupons from “local“ businesses. Literally takes up more than half my mailbox. On the back it gives a url to take your address off the mailing list, and when I went to do that it took ten full minutes to finally get through it; and at the end the only way I could get “unsubscribed” was if I allowed them to share my address with third parties. And it was sent from California, 1700 miles away. Local, my ass. But that’s why I don’t check the mail every day, mom. Sorry.
All to say it’s just a part of the “enshittification” of our world, our reality. Even our personal down time is no longer respected unless you make a point of going off the grid. Our “freedom” has been sold to the highest bidder just so super elite billionaires and massive corporations can squeeze a few more Pennies out of you; pennies you can’t afford to begin with. I don’t know about you but I find it equal parts repulsive and downright infuriating.
I assume many of you are at least partially plugged into what’s happening in American politics at the moment. Just like these ads, it’s nearly impossible to ignore. But there is what I believe to be a mini revolution going on; the corporate media and owners of social media would have you believe it’s about ideology or “how much to fight.” But they’re typically missing everything as usual, as that’s what their business model requires. This is about entire generations getting the shaft politically, financially and even culturally. Establishment types from the political class have made everything for the general population more expensive, lower quality and stacked the deck against you if you didn’t inherit or marry into money. And now they see even the slightest policy adjustment to make everything more equitable as a threat. It’s not an accident they’re actively calling even mainstream progressives “communists” or extreme.
But this shit is all connected. There are candidates who are running exclusively on taxing the rich, getting money out of politics and giving everyone access to healthcare without going bankrupt…and many of those candidates are winning. It’s the same people responsible for ads on gas station screens/in our mailboxes that are also putting political ads in every single video you watch. EVERY time an election cycle ends anywhere in the country, the first thing someone says is how happy they are to not see those screaming fear mongering ads any more. Imagine if we could do the same with the rest. Wouldn’t that be heavenly? It’s a tough thing to do, but can we afford not to try?(pun totally intended)
Anyways, I’m not here to tell anybody how to vote or who to support, I just want everyone as frustrated as me to see the connection. The powers that be are petrified, so no matter what your ideological views are, please don’t let them fool you into thinking rooting out this fucking insane wealth disparity and barrage of ads in every aspect of life as “extreme.” Even if you think other aspects of candidates‘ platform are things you disagree with, don’t let them badger you into thinking they stand for things they don’t. Engage with others and fight for what means the most to you, but just don’t let the elites cloud your view of what’s important.
Most of this isn’t left versus right, it’s right versus wrong. There’s some big opportunities for change if we can get there together. ✌️
Hey folks, sorry if this comes across as some sort of rant. I was just reading through some threads involving Hong and rather than try and make multiple responses in multiple posts, I figured it would be best just to make one of my own. Bear with me…
Here’s the deal; ever since FH announced her candidacy for governor, I’ve noticed two rather distinct reactions from the left-of-center crowd. One is people being excited and announcing their support. The other reaction - and far and away the more prevalent one - is people already hedging…ya know what I’m referring to. Basically “I like her BUT…(insert talk of “too far left for a purple state” proclamations).” The word “extreme“ pops up far more than it should. And ya know what? Fine, to each their own.
But I feel like I need to point out a few important factors many seem to either ignore or just not understand.
This isn’t 2016. And no, it’s not 2020, 2022, 2024 and *even* 2025. Since January 2025, SOOO much has changed. The electorate has radicalized in real time and it’s not just on the left; even some Trumpers are seeing things differently. Not only is everyone seeing how dangerous and outright evil the GOP has become, they’re also seeing perhaps for the first time that democrats suck too. At the very least that they aren’t anywhere approaching progressive in their ideology/legislation and many in the party are backed by the same people who prop up republicans.
This is primary season, as I assume you’re aware. It’s when voters choose who they want in government to fight against republicans, and the time that everybody points to when the general comes around and the candidate is a moderate. They say that you gotta vote for progressives in the primary and the general is when you “vote blue no matter who”. This is obvious, but important to keep in mind. It’s time to “vote your values” and that’s what’s happening. Pick the best candidate, pick who represents YOU. It can’t be who you think might maybe win later.
So you’ll imagine my frustration when every single thread I read is filled with people saying it’s stupid to vote for Hong because she’s so “far left” and extreme. So many people already counting her out and blaming her for some future loss that hasn’t even happened.
Polling for months has shown her leading. But there’s always a cadre of people lining up to say it’s too early; those polls don’t matter.
Polling came out with Hong leading just before Democrat Rodriguez dropped out. Many claimed that polling didn’t include Rodriguez; those polls didn’t matter.
Crowley jumped back in the race with the endorsement of the sitting governor, and Fran was still leading in polling…but cmon everybody, people said, those results didn’t include enough time for the endorsement to settle. That polling doesn’t matter.
Leading up to the governor’s debate, polling still had Hong ahead by quite a bit. But surely the debate will streamline everything and skew those results. There’s a respected Marquette one that will give us a better idea of what’s going on. This polling doesn’t matter.
I’m sure you know where this is going…today, Marquette says she’s expanded her lead substantially, but people are STILL either saying it’s not over until the election or just outright saying she WILL LOSE. And those “blue no matter who” peeps? A not insignificant chunk saying they won’t vote for her because she’s too extreme.
I just don’t get it. I have been voting for decades and almost exclusively for the blue ticket. I am absolutely an unabashed progressive, leftist and social democrat my whole life and have NEVER had representation in my government. I voted for Kamala even though she nearly exclusively catered to moderates and campaigned with Liz Cheney. And know what? I still got and keep getting blamed for the Kamala loss. The immediate aftermath of the election, most elected democrats agreed the problem wasn’t THEM. It was people like ME. “Too far left.”
Now that I have a candidate who legitimately excites me for the first time ever, all I see is people equivocating, minimizing and getting pissed off. I get called a “Hong bot” or a fanboy and told I’m insufferable. But isn’t this what all these liberals wanted? Progressives are finally popping through in primaries, and NOW is the time to be pessimistic? There’s no concrete reasoning or data or evidence that social democrats or antiestablishment candidates CANT win; because for the most part in modern history, they’ve never gotten even a chance for any important elected office. Why does such a huge chunk of the left think it won’t happen?
Geez, sorry. Again, didn’t mean to type this much. All I’m saying is, we’re in a new political reality. The electorate has contorted in nearly every direction the last 18 months. I firmly believe these non establishment candidates will do just fine. I unequivocally believe they’ll do better than moderates would. And the pessimism and whataboutism isn’t helpful. In fact, comes across as rather condescending.
If Hong or any other progressive is not your first choice? Fine. But for me, neither was Kamala. Or Biden. Or Hillary. Blue no matter who, right?
✌️
(please don’t remove this, I’m not breaking any rules and am doing this in good faith. if it’s removed, please let me know why)
I’ve had a problem with this sub from the first time I ever logged into it. It has always felt to me like there were some good Madisonians here who sparked good, thoughtful conversation/discussion who were always drowned out by loud, antagonistic outside users that may have visited the city at some point but clearly aren’t from Madison. I’ve lived here most my adult life and have a great feel for its inhabitants from most every corner, and it’s pretty easy to spot.
So I eventually muted it, but still use it when I need local outreach or when there’s big things happening like there are this week. And it’s making it borderline unusable for me. Whether it’s these protests, crime, homelessness or even things about race, it’s so disappointing to read some of the crap I see. Things like, “these protests are annoying but don’t worry soon it’ll upgrade to Madison’s usual looting and firebombing soon enough.” Or “maybe the cops wouldn’t need to shoot criminals in the street if we didn’t have ‘lefty politicians and prosecutors’(yes, exact quote I’ve seen at least three times in the last two days alone) letting murderous thugs out with a slap on the wrist all the time.” And the always popular “this city makes me fear for my life, things are so getting out of control and I’m so sick of it”(this one can be found in ANY discussion, not just this latest protest stuff).
And these things rarely get called out, and if they do they generally get buried by downvotes.
Madison has been and CONTINUES to be one of the safest cities in the country. But yet examples like I’ve got here still get upvoted by the hundreds and dominate nearly every big thread. I’m not here to say I’m afraid of differing opinion. I’m not here saying dissent should be removed or banned. And even if I were, I genuinely recognize nobody gives one single solitary fuck about what little old me thinks in the first place.
What I AM saying is that I’m not the only one who feels this way, and productive conversation is what ends up losing out to those other over the top bravado filled rants…and that hurts the sub. In other words, even if I don’t come back, it still stops others from coming and engaging with our community. When a vibrant, established and safe city is routinely portrayed as a violent shit hole, you know something is off.
So can we please do what some other subs do when there are big time, CITY CENTRIC events being talked about? Make them only available for people who have a history/karma with the sub. Or install a “flair users only” policy. I don’t know, the details can be negotiated I guess, I just want the sub to represent the people already here more than random weirdos who flock here to start shit simply because they know they CAN.
Outsiders can still participate in all the other content. But it’s infuriating seeing some of the nonsense posted here, and even if you want to ban me or leave me out I’d be fine so long as the sub reflects the beauty of the city that anyone who actually lives here, knows it is.
✌️
So disclaimer, I wasn’t able to take more pictures after the first finished one. Apologies for that, by the time I had gone for seconds there were only crumbs left. No idea who’s to blame, but it definitely wasn’t my gf who is the only other person in the apartment. 🥴
We don’t generally like to get store generic brands, and in case you’re unaware this is krogers generic brand. It’s usually $7.99 but was on sale for 4.99 and we were craving Mexican so we bought it. Five bucks is decent for about 2-3 servings(says 4 but nah) and these were good. There’s not much rice but there’s plenty of black beans and those are my fave anyways; they’re lime and cilantro flavored and are a great side. The plate there has Ortega taco sauce, sour cream and jalapeños all of which we added ourselves. Also used up some Doritos and shredded cheese we had on hand, too. No, these are not bursting with flavor, but it‘s definitely more flavorful than I was expecting from a generic brand. Not spicy at all which isn’t really a good thing for me, but it has a sweet tangy kick to it.
The downside is there’s not much chicken. At all. I would’ve heated up a can of chicken breast if I had known, but on the plus side the chicken that IS in there is chunky chicken breast. I would’ve taken a picture of the inside to show, but I didn’t know it would disappear so fast(🤨).
I would give it a 7/10. My gf a 9/10. So I give an 8/10 overall. I would maybe get it again but if so, would definitely pick up a can of Swanson chicken breasts first.
✌️
I just can’t with this shit anymore. Sooo many angles of ridicule here, I don’t even know where to start. And some wonder how conspiracy theories are so prevalent in the United States…
Dunno, maybe I’m a jaded, cynical old man but I can’t even watch the ASG. All star games are meant to be love letters to their fanbases so why does it seem like every major sports ASG gets worse every year?
When I was a kid - and yes, a Brewers fan - I loved the all star game because I got to see all my favorite players actually play…even though there weren’t usually many Brewers actually playing. Sure it was the steroids era, but seeing Bonds, Sosa, McGuire, Frank Thomas, etc all on the same field was stellar tv. The guys whose baseball cards I collected and stored in glass cases were more entertaining than my favorite team anyways and even as a kid, I understood the trade off.
Now that the Brewers are somehow able to consistently have one of the best teams in the majors, I don’t even get to see them at the ASG? Miz apparently decided he wasn’t gonna pitch before he ever had any tightness and the only other Crew member who played I missed cuz I had to make a bathroom break.
NFL is a bit of a different story as it’s such a violent sport but their all star stuff is a joke anymore. NBA used to have fun ones but now they seem to just want to make it some gathering of players for people to gamble on and the actual “game” doesn’t even make sense. Seems like baseball shouldn’t have the same problems but no actual stars seem to even want to play this one, either. Maybe there isn‘t the same star power as in past seasons?
Again, maybe this is just me. Seems like a big missed opportunity but with everything going on with greed in this country, everything everywhere seems to be getting worse. Regardless of how you feel about the salary cap stuff, bloated contracts need to be addressed somehow or this will all price fans out soon. And it’s expensive already. Fuck the owners but all that money has to go somewhere. Simple entertaining things like an all star game shouldn’t be that hard to figure out. Ok, done bitching. Perhaps you disagree. ✌️
(P.S. sorry didn’t mean to type that much 🥴)
I was having trouble sleeping(insomniac here) and flipped on Netflix at 2am to get my mind to stop running. Just irritated and impatient I hit play on Travelers. Expected it to be cheesy or corny but mindless…it was neither.
I didn’t end up sleeping that night at all but I had a new obsession. It’s three seasons and a total of 34 episodes. It’s science fiction but if you have never heard of it, I recommend not reading a ton about it; watch the first episode to see if the premise is interesting to you. The opening is a federal agent who is tracking down and investigating some people who suddenly had drastic changes in personality. From there, there’s lots of twists and surprises. It takes a couple episodes to really get going, but by the fifth episode you know pretty much all the reasoning behind what’s going on. If you don’t like it by the end of the sixth, don’t watch more. But I imagine more people would like it if they actually knew about it. NOBODY in my circle heard of it and it’s a great thing to talk about.
I was hoping others could back me up here. But it’s not just me; it’s got a 100% rating on rotten tomatoes(96% audience score) and an 8.1 out of 10 on IMDb. So again, why had I heard nothing??
Also not to be creepy, but one of the female leads - MacKenzie Porter - is one of the most gorgeous women I’ve ever seen. She’s actually a decent actress too, but her stunning looks are almost a distraction for me. But there will be other faces people will recognize. Eric McCormick is probably someone most know.
It’s intriguing but a bit confusing up until the sixth episode, that’s when it mostly comes together and it’s intense the rest of the way. There are a few things that don’t make a ton of sense scientifically but that’s why they call it science FICTION. It was canceled after the third season, but still has a mostly concrete ending. Give it a shot! I think you would have fun if you do.
✌️
I recently had a surgery done, and was left with a lot of couch time the last few weeks. Combined with a lack of sleep I had a bunch of bored time and casually scanned through other fans’ subs while I had the game on tv.
(just to be clear; never once did I ever actually interact with them not even with up/down votes)
Man, if I had known what I would see over these times I would’ve probably saved links to share. The worst - far and away - was the Cubs subreddit. You expect some snark or maybe some emotional overreaction but…
Time and again these guys took shots at Wisconsin and its people, NOTHING to do with baseball. One post said that our state is a shit hole full of racists and Trump fans outside of Milwaukee(shouldn’t have to tell anybody but I have family all over the state who are nothing of the kind even in rural areas. And is Illinois different?). Another post proclaimed Brewers fans are the most arrogant, ignorant and entitled fans in the entire country. There was even one post that raged about how Brewers fans have never experienced a World Series title because players refuse to sign here, because of how stupid, fat and racist our people are. All subs get things like that eventually, but these posts were UPVOTED, top of the thread most times. Would think they should be removed but whatever. And of course without fail, win or lose, they ALWAYS have to say something about the Crew never ever winning in the playoffs and pining for the Cubs to meet the Brewers in the playoffs for an easy win. Which, whatever, but they seem to also forget that just last year they lost to this supposed postseason “failure” of a team.
The other subs? Garden variety stuff for the most part. Reds and Pirates always talk about hating our team. They use us as an avatar to take out frustrations with their clubs’ struggles. I would read it, chuckle and move on. But it was never vitriolic. Cardinals sub makes it exceedingly clear they hate the Milwaukee Brewers, too. That’s to be expected for division rivals. I read one thread there today though, where they all said they fucking hate us(team and fans)…but then had a quick discussion about how much they respect the franchise and its management. They said we do it the right way, and even that our front office is doing a lot of the same things THEIR FO did over the years to maintain success. One guy said - after making clear he hates the Crew - that he likes seeing good baseball and that it would be nice to see us fans get a title soon.
All to say, I don’t spend a ton of time in this sub but I don’t recall anybody talking about our rivals the way those cubs fans do. I imagine we have fans that suck but I also would think other fans would call that shit out if they saw it. And in no way am I saying Cubs fans are all like that. But it was jarring compared to the others. So much unchecked rage and hatred. They just won a title a decade ago but they act like it’s never happened and then somehow call our fanbase “entitled.”
Dunno, sorry for writing a novel. Is it like that while out at the ballpark? Or is it just that sub? I was pretty shocked at how vile that stuff was and am having a hard time figuring out why they hate us so much more passionately than they do the others. Not a lot of humanity.
✌️
Ok, so you will probably shame me over this, but I’ve not eaten much Jeni’s. I was able to snag a couple scoops from my gf before she finished some she had on hand. But I’m having a hard time finding any place around me that carries the brand.
Yah, I KNOW! Seems like every other post here is about Jeni’s…
But I did find these key lime sandwiches. I almost wish I hadn’t tried them, oh my god my knees buckled with my first bite. It’s kind of hard to find key lime pie done well, and it’s my favorite ice cream or dessert. These things blew me away. Perfectly tart ice cream matches the sweet graham cracker crust, just freaking heavenly.
The problem is a box of three? Cost $7.99. I will keep checking other places but that is pretty damn expensive. Sale price and I would stock up. Otherwise this will be only special occasion type stuff for me. Probably for the best, this box didn’t last two hours. But holy shit are they awesome! I don’t give many 10/10 reviews on things, but these are a 10. Highly recommended for other Jeni’s novices like myself!
So I debated with my gf if I should even post this because it’s such a touchy subject. But I think it’s a conversation worth having.
I was getting some random groceries on the west side for a birthday party, picked up some bagels for friends. As I was walking out, it dawned on me that some in our circle like cream cheese on said bagels. So I stopped mid stride and turned to look towards the cream cheese selection I had just happened to walk by. As I sort of squinted to check the different varieties, there was a person just outside my line of sight. I mean, it’s a busy store and of course there’s people but I didn’t think anything of it.
As I was reaching for a tub of cream cheese, that person near my line of sight stood in my way with his hands up in the air. My first reaction was to just smile but I was genuinely confused, he looked upset and eventually started asking me if I’ve ever seen a black person before. Like, seriously, what the fuck? As I reached around him to get the tub and began walking to check out, he followed me for a few steps and kept telling me to “get a good look,” asked “got your phone for a picture?” and “it’s just skin.”
I don’t even know what I was supposed to say. Apparently he thought I stopped mid stride to…stare at a black guy? And the thing is, this kind of thing has happened before here in Madison. I don’t think there’s anything special about me, I’m just a seriously plain looking white dude. Can’t imagine I look imposing or remotely aggressive but I’ve even been literally hissed at while strolling Woodmans.
Just to be clear; I absolutely know there’s racists around. I’m not fucking blind, it can be a shit storm of bigotry in this country. And the black friends I’ve had over the years have always talked about micro aggressions and I genuinely always believed that those things happened and sympathized with them. But when stuff like today happens, those complaints now give me pause. When it really shouldn’t. Frustrating.
Just wanted to hear if others have experienced this. And obviously I’d love to hear any perspective from people who were maybe on the other end of my situation? I know it’s a sensitive topic but I’d like to know more about how you all feel…even if you disagree with anything I’ve said. ✌️
I’ve been scrolling through threads both here and on other Wisconsin subs(Madison, Eau Claire, Green Bay etc) lately, and especially with this new interview for Francesca Hong with Piker, I see some wildly strange stuff being said. And I just feel this deserves its own post rather than chasing a hundred different threads to say that one pretty simple thing that I feel many of you need to hear. Whether you like it and agree with it or think I’m a loon that should shut up, I don’t care. It just needs to be said:
There is no “far left” in American politics. Point blank, period. Hong, Piker, Mamdani, Platner even Bernie Sanders are all progressive and some possibly leftists. But not a single one of them would be considered “extreme” on the global political scale. Especially with their economic policy; it is watered down versions of what has already been installed, and provably successful in other countries. And it is what we here in America DESPERATELY need, to address wealth inequality and allow the average citizen currently living paycheck to paycheck to live happy, meaningful lives. That’s the brutal truth and if you want to maintain the system that is letting Elon Musk and the billionaire class amass more and more power through wealth, then keep calling these non-establishment democrats “far left.” Because that’s exactly what’s going to happen if you do.
Again, I don’t care if you agree with my personal politics or anything I’ve said here. The entire country needs a reset when it comes to perspective in our engrained ideology. I see so many here who claim to be lower middle class doing everything they can to stifle any progress that could be made; intentional or not. As long as you understand the bigger picture I’m touching upon here, you’re welcome to continue doing that. But something tells me most of those posts are either massively uninformed or are bots trying to alter the discourse.
Take this how you will. ✌️
I posted about these beauties a few weeks ago, we had Key Lime Pie flavored Nightingales but were aghast at the price. My local grocery store had it for $8.99 a box. Yikes. So kind of figured it’d be a one time experience, heavenly as it was. Today, that price is now $9.99 ffs…for FOUR mini bars.
BUT, they had a sale: Buy 5 and the price drops to $3.99 per box. So I didn’t want to spend 10 bucks on these things, but found it within reason to spend 20 bucks on these things! Yes, it’s much cheaper but still…clearly they can afford to sell them for 4 bucks but 250% more bucks is the price point they landed on. Kinda disgusting, but I digress…
We LOVE the key lime pie. You fine folks told me to try the others, including banana pudding and brookie, so I heeded that call. The Brookie ones are definitely great, so kudos. The banana pudding ones? Not so much. My gf and I are fighting over the key lime and brookie, she took one bite of the banana pudding and spit it out. And sorry to say, I will eat them but only because they’re so costly and I don’t want them to go to waste. Maybe I got a bad batch, but honestly it tastes like there’s actual banana peels in the crust. Not good. Good thing we only got one box of those.
So I just wanted to ask you guys real quick; which flavor is your favorite? I recall other people recommended churro or birthday cake flavored ones but my grocery doesn’t have those. If you don’t wanna say your favorite maybe just upvote someone else’s response and maybe we’ll get some consensus. If you’re feeling extra frisky, also say which is your least favorite. If not, that’s fine too. I’ll keep an eye out for the other flavors in the meantime, though there’s no way I’ll pay ten bucks for a box so have to wait for another sale.
Cheers.
