where should I take my sister to late lunch/early dinner in DTLA?

I haven't worked in DTLA in years so my knowledge of eateries is relegated to 2024 and before. She gets into LA around 2pm, so the place needs to be open during the afternoon post lunch service. My sister is picky & avoids a lot of stuff (wait a second, this is LA, she'll be fine) but she mentioned perhaps a steak. The last time we ate dinner in LA together was in 2023 & I took us to Water Grill, which she liked plenty (it's also an option this time around), so something similar to that but with more red meat options. I also have Yard House on the list because it's easy & similar to our usual default in NYC, The Smith (lol at us).

Thanks in advance!

if you taste a dish someone else made, can you recreate it (or at least a reasonable facsimile)?

if I'm familiar enough with the cuisine/ingredients, I generally can without looking up a recipe. I've been cooking for decades though, have an adventurous palate & have been fortunate enough to eat a wide swath of different foods from all over the world.

I love hearing about other people's skills/experiences with cooking/food.

Q about liang pi: do you mix all the sauces together first or plop them in separately into the bowl of noodles?

I've ordered this dish several times from a local spot (LAN NOODLE in weho, Los Angeles) and it comes with the garlic water, black vinegar, chili oil, sesame paste all separate, so when I eat it, I just dump them randomly into the noodles.

I've been making a version at home using wheat noodles & was mixing all those condiments together before topping the noodles & veg/tofu, but something about the homogeny of the sauce doesn't hit the same way as when you get unincorporated pops of chili oil or garlic water or vinegar. today, I'm going to dump all the sauces in separately and halfassedly mix as I do when I get the restaurant version to see how that fares.

curious to know how others eat/prepare this dish at home. thanks!

I mean, one could describe it as a real life Snow White minus the talking mirror, poisoned apple & evil stepmother. OK, I guess it's nothing like Snow White. (not an animated film)

clues go here.

if you get elevated regularly with edibles (on the daily), how high do you like to get? what products do you use?

I'm a daily edible taker (have been since 2020, I started just before pandemic which probably saved my life, honestly) so my tolerance is pretty high (I need ~40-50mg to lift off). I cycle through different products, especially once my tolerance got above 30mg, since I didn't want to eat too many gummies.

Currently I'm switching between Breez pills (20mg each, so I take 2-3) and the Buddies oil gel caps (25mg each, so I take 2), but I really loved RSO the most because of how full bodied ripped I got. I was probably overdosing myself at the start since those syringes are fiddly but holy hell, I am pretty sure I was conversing with god the first few times, like couch locked, drooling but seeing the universe clearly, euphoria waves, some psychoactive visuals. I loved that, but I also know that's not a realistic daily experience. That's what I would consider 10 on a scale of 1-10.

Nowadays I'm happy enough being at a 6-7 level (mild couch lock, music sounds great, this ice cream makes me shudder with delight), and I'll get there with about 60mg.

Yes, I am trying to reduce my tolerance slowly with intermittent T breaks but I'm not too serious about it since my body keeps landing there & seems to like it. At one point, I was up to 100mg if not more. I keep a spreadsheet of mgs/product/results to track my progress. I am a nerd, I know.

I'd like to know more about other people's experiences so I don't feel like an isolated scientist.

which is your most wild SVU episode? like, the one that sticks in your mind after 10+ years & you can still quote because it affected you that much.

My favorite one is the ep starring Sarah Paulson & that handsome Indian dude because the whole thing is banana town (the rich old dude licking Liv's Prada knee high boots was mint), but the word "banana" reminds me of the episode where an older, sexually avaricious man is found murdered with a banana shoved in his rectum & Benson has to ask the widow, "Is there any reason why the killer would sodomize your husband with a banana?" & the widow replies, "he...he was allergic to bananas." my friends & i sampled & looped that exchange for weeks on end 20 years ago & I'm still laughing thinking about it now.

what are some of your favorite "OMG, I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY DID THAT" moments from contestants?

whenever I feel bad about life, I cue up the premiere of whatever season TEXAS was & watch that smug young dude who looked like a bizarro Chris Klein but dumber faced shred that tenderloin with such painful inexperience & undeserved confidence for a good laugh.

the burger at EL CARTEL on Wilshire is shockingly delicious considering it's a Mexican spot

I used to work nearby (and live not too far from here) and became familiar with their offerings since they were within walking distance. the Mexican food itself is fine but the burger is a sleeper hit: made in house, well-seasoned & flavorful, expertly put together & nicely balanced with toppings (simple: cheese, tomato, lettuce, ketchup, mayo). it comes with a side of fries (the frozen steak frites style) and the whole thing is like 15 bucks before tax/tip. I ordered last night after a few month hiatus & it still slapped.

Just wanted to give a little love to a mom & pop shop during a time where it's gotta be extremely difficult to succeed in the restaurant industry.

homemade focaccia with two scrambled eggs

no job, no income. it's been nearly two years & I'm living off savings which are nearly depleted. this is very anxiety inducing so I cook a lot to find equilibrium & peace.

homemade focaccia with roasted shiitake & baby Bella mushrooms, marinated cherry tomatoes, ricotta, Swiss & grated Parmesan, garlic/herb oil brushed on top, finished with maldon salt flakes.

two sunny side up eggs.

if you're in Los Angeles & hungry, I will feed you.
