Learning to use a pattern, but running into a glitch

The triangles at the top of the photo are actually more unaligned than they look here—must be the awkward angle of the camera.

How do I match both sets of diamonds when they don’t both match up no matter how much I refold along the borders?

I’m a SUPER newbie when it comes to sewing. I just this morning learned how to print and (try to) align PDF patterns (and I’ve never actually touched a paper pattern in my life much less looked at one). I say this to implore you to talk me through this like I’m a nine year old. 🙏

Do the scallop pinking shears work as well as the regular sharp-points version?

Does this design work as well as the old-fashioned pinking shears when it comes to helping to keep raw edges from unraveling?

POV: your husband said your sewing machine was too expensive

I’m thinking a lot of beginners may not have seen this before. I hadn’t until just now, and thought maybe it would bring smile to your face like it did to mine. 🤣

Happy weekending!

The only quilt I’ve ever made 🥹

I moved the quilt from the bedroom to the living room a bit ago. He found it.

Hi. Remember me? The skirt gal?

Wellllll…read at your own peril. This usually cheerful, positive girl is about to vent a bit. 🥺

I just finished making my first garment—a skirt from a sheet. Let’s just say that I’ll be continuing to BUY my clothes instead of making them.

Not only did SO MANY things go wrong, from wishing I’d left 17 more inches in the width of the elastic casing (yes, I exaggerate, but getting that dang elastic in took me twice as long as the entire rest of the project); to thinking, “I’ll just leave in these nicely hemmed edges” and ending up with super thick side seams; to being left hanging at the end of the YT video I was following with instructions to “chop off” a bunch of inches then “hem it up” with no instructions on how to measure an already put together skirt to cut it straight or gauge the hem; to coming to the end of the hem—I winged it—only to find more fabric in the skirt part than the hem (I think I know how to make darts now though, I’m not sure).

ANYway, I know the simple skirts I like (pictured here in navy) will be much less expensive to purchase on Etsy than sewing my own with “real” fabric instead of a $10 sheet set from Target, and I’m thinking that’s fine by me.

If I had someone to sit with me and walk me through the process, answering my questions and correcting me as I went along, maybe I’d feel differently, but our local fabric store’s “sewing lessons” have specific set agendas (Let’s make a placemat! Let’s make a tie bag!) while I’m chomping at the bit to learn the ins and outs of sewing: How do I determine what my stitch length should be? Why is the corner of the pocket bunching up like that? How do I handle a huge piece of fabric to get it cut and cut correctly?

I’ll have the fabric I need for my next quilt this week, so I believe I’ll stick to quilting as I thoroughly enjoyed my first quilt process last month and definitely did NOT enjoy my first garment process.

Thank you for reading to the end. 💕

Doable or a pipe dream?

I’m new to sewing and have made only one quilt.

I’m thinking of making a double wedding ring quilt to give as an anniversary gift. I would need it complete by mid May 2027.

Am I just dreaming to think I’d be able to make this quilt with such limited experience?

Please tell me….

What’s happening at the Shell on the corner of 31 and South Airport? I hope they’re just revamping and it will soon be Shell back open.

Meanwhile, where are the other Shell stations with car washes in TC?

I've read that Gütermann and Coats and Clark are the threads to use, but what about other brands such as Connecting Threads' Essential or Aurifil? If you've used either of them, what was your experience with them?

I used Gütermann for my first quilt, and it worked great (though it's fuzzy!); I'm just wondering about alternatives for future quilts, particularly 100% cotton.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a local sewing instructor who works 1:1 helping individuals learn to sew?

I’m teaching myself, but I learn best when someone actually shows me and then provides feedback as I attempt what I’ve seen on YouTube.

I had an Etsy seller block me after I asked a simple question about a quilt pattern she has for sale. Is it an unwritten rule among the quilting community that we’re not to ask questions about patterns for sale online?

This feels weird.

EDIT: A copy of my conversation with her is below in response to those who asked.

I've been working in Excel and writing vlookups since Excel was Symphony 123. Whenever vlookups don't work, I'm baffled for the longest time but can usually detect my error. Not this time.

The first picture shows the column I'm trying to pull from (column E). The second shows the column I'm trying to pull column E row 267 into (column O).

https://preview.redd.it/60eh6pojt4zg1.jpg?width=863&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=46e9368f3540bc3f6cf2ef646b2bdd9bd3d53bae

My formula in column N (which works) is the same as it is in column O (which doesn't work--the result should be 6) except I'm referencing column E instead of column D (5 columns over from A instead of 4). So the formula in column N is =VLOOKUP($K266,$A:$J,4,FALSE)*$M266 and the formula in column O is =VLOOKUP($K266,$A:$J,5,FALSE)*$M266.

What am I missing?? All the columns are formatted identically to one another. (Yes, I did notice in my screen shots that only one decimal place is showing in column E and two in column O. I corrected that and still no 6 as a result.)

I FINALLY reached the point where I’m serious about losing weight. Again. I need to lose about 40# to reduce not only my weight but my chronic pain as well.

I just discovered this sub, and will be stalking all your wonderful helpful tips. I just realized that the tracking app I’ve been using faithfully for over 1,000 days has done more of a disservice that I realized. I’ve returned to the spreadsheet that helped me lose 49# a couple decades ago.

I’ve been a vegetarian since 1985 and will continue to be; Just a 👋🏻 to sort of introduce myself and look for a little encouragement…🥹

I have chronic pain from myriad ailments (e.g., arthritis, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, a couple herniated discs, bursitis, fibromyalgia, etc., etc., etc.), though I pretend to the world that I don’t. I’d been a holdout for years when it came to taking meds unless the pain became unbearable, but it’s come to the point now (I’m 67) where I’m taking NSAIDS daily because of the pain level, and the dose has been inching up. 🥺

I’m concerned about my kidneys, liver, and gastrointestinal health now.

I can ask my PCP (she’s been wonderful at working with me on various issues ‘til the results are as desired), but I’m wondering if anyone here has any suggestions for a medication (prescription or otherwise) for this type of pain that’s been effective and less impactful than daily OTC med use so I can do some research before speaking with her.

I know about and use exercise, PT, heat, ice packs, etc. to help. I’m specifically interested in ideas for alternate medications to what I’ve been taking.

Thank you for reading! 💕

It appears Dr. Jeffrey Goldman has retired. Who would you recommend at Digestive Health Associates?

I posted this in the section at the top of this sub, but no one responded, so I’m posting it here.

Can anyone help?
