Complete tutorial - Snap-fit lids and Customizable models on MakerWorld

Here's a customizable box with snap-fit lids.

https://makerworld.com/en/models/3085497-parametric-box-design-breakdown-makerworld-setup#profileId-3475721

Nuff said?

No. It's actually a complete tutorial. I show you how to design snap-fit lids using the cantilever-beam principle (sounds more complicated than it is).

I also show how to create and upload parameterized models on MakerWorld so they can customize certain aspects of your design.

Faction lids for the Cyberpunk TCG deck box I designed

I designed a set of swappable lids for my Cyberpunk TCG deck box so you can customize your box to match the faction you're playing or just the one you like. The collection covers 11 factions, from Arasaka to the Voodoo Boys, plus Samurai and Edgerunners.

You can download them here:

https://makerworld.com/en/models/3067028-faction-lids-for-cyberpunk-tcg-choom-deck-box#profileId-3452245

Note that these are only available for the "Choom" version of the deck box. I included a link in the description for the model's page.

Also, the colors in my prints are just what I had on hand. I've included suggested color schemes that better match the source material.

New alternate lids for my Cyberpunk TCG deck box

I created a few alternate lids for my Cyberpunk TCG deck box: Arasaka (Logo), Arasaka (Logo and Name) and Edgerunners.

This is only for the "Choom" version of the deck box for now, but I will make it work for the "Chromed" and "Excelsior" version down the road.

You can grab them here.

https://makerworld.com/en/models/2802723-cyberpunk-tcg-deck-box-for-toploaders#profileId-3118083

Note:
I'm working on a few more things as well. I started building versions for every street gang logo. After that, I'm going to start an even bigger deck box which I've already named "the Adam Smasher"

UPDATE: DT’s low score for Deep Regrets

Post I made last week regarding Dice Tower's low scores regarding Deep Regrets. A lot of you had things to say about this, and it encouraged me to take the plunge (accidental pun).

We liked it. I mean, we REALLY liked it. It fits a need I did not know I had. Yes, it's mostly luck, but that fits given the format. It's fishing. It did not take long for me to grab both extensions. Funny enough, I was worried about not liking the game without them (thinking the extensions would "fix" the concerns by the reviewers). I just want to get "more" of what the base game does.

I'm a grown-ass man who should know better than thinking these scores and rankings are as if they were solid gold standards. To complicate things further, I missinterpret these scores all the time. 6 out 10 is still good. It's not bad because there are games with much better scores out there. Lastly, there is no reason to think that some of the games they reviewed as "bad" could be games that I like.

I feel doubly silly because this should not be a new lesson for me. When I started out in this hobby, I looked at the BBG top 100 as something that represented the penultimate board gaming experience. I would snatch any game that was on that list if I did not already own it. I enjoyed a lot of these games, but not necessarily all of them.

Then this one time, I went over to a friend's house for a board game day. They were playing this game I had never heard about called Medici, and I @#$% loved it. I mean... LOOOOVED it. I would have played that the whole damn day. When I looked it up, I was flabbergasted to see it several hundred positions down the top 100 (I may be wrong, but I recall it being in the low thousands; now it seems to be around 700). Another one that surprised me was Skull. This game is responsible for one of the best family memories. I brought it to a Christmas party with my new in-laws. It was a game of 6 players, and we had twice that amount of people looking over our shoulders and shouting with each played hand.

I just want to say thanks to everyone who helped remind me that this hobby is about fun, and part of the fun is trying and discovering new things.

/bow with thankfulness.

Bonus: As an example, I'll take MTG. It's a game that has its place in the history books for gaming. I know many people who revere it and may even say it shaped their youth. I also know that this game is NOT for everyone, and I can tell when that's the case before they've even tried the game. As for me? It's good. It's more than fine... I'd rather play Old King's Crown.

Wroth Board Game insert and Organizer

Wroth Board Game insert and Organizer
Compatible with any/all expansion

https://makerworld.com/en/models/3000757-wroth-board-game-insert-for-all-expansions#profileId-3369017

No lid lift. Safe for vertical storage.

I like Wroth, especially the visuals, so I incorporated each faction's banner on their respective bins.

Each bin holds the troop dice, troop markers, feat cards, and scenario cards for its faction. You can also print optional trays for the dice and markers.

The bins have sliding lids that lock in place, and the final result has no lid lift. There's just enough room left for the reference cards and the manual.

Translating colourful images to .SVG friendly printable designs

I made this organizer for Wroth. It's a very good game, but more importantly (for this sub), it has a lot of fantastic visuals. I wanted to make my insert look like the game, so I got to work on finding a way to incorporate the images in my designs.

This was the challenge. I had to hone my photoshop skills and understand how to manage colourful images and bring them down to the simplest black and white form. That way I could make them easy for an SVG converter to handle. I may make a video on the process (if people are interested, that is).

Lots of tests were made to figure out and understand the level of fine detail I could get when printing images. Short answer: "Fine" is a big word when working with multicolour prints.

My recipe comes down to this:

Make the image a bit fuzzy, tone down the amount of colours (ie simplify shades), remove colours completely, and if all looks good, use one of the many free online .SVG converters.

With photoshop,

  • Apply a black and white filter
  • Move the various colours of the black and white filter, either completely up or down. This gives you a lot of control over which zones appear black or white.
  • Optional steps
    • Under Filter / Other, use Maximum to make the lines look FAT.
    • Apply Gaussian blur. Makes the lines a bit fatter.
  • Use an online converter. I used to favor the Adobe one, but almost any other gives you more control.

If you are curious, take a look here:

DT’s low score for Deep Regrets

Dice Tower gave Deep Regrets about 6.5. I could not find a follow up review with the Expansion: Even Deeper Regrets.

In fact most of my research (even with AI) did not come up with much information as to how well it improves the base.

Does the example  » the irritants people have mentioned, such as but not limited lengthy play time?

Nice-Looking One Piece TCG Bulk Storage Box

Here's a fancy looking bulk storage box for One Piece TCG players.

It's designed for sleeved or unsleeved cards. Slot dimensions accommodate standard card sleeves, including Dragon Shield Mattes. Storage is set to broadside (horizontal).

This lid is a cantilever snap-fit lid. It will click shut and won't go bad over time.

Significant visual update to Arkham Horror LCG insert

The lids got a significant visual upgrade. They now use a concealed snap-fit design, with the retention tabs hidden inside the lid rather than passing through it. In other words, the top of the lid is now completely flat.

https://makerworld.com/en/models/2561263-arkham-horror-card-game-second-chapter-insert#profileId-2822076

The lids share the same overall dimensions as the previous version, so if you've already printed the insert, you can print just the lids to upgrade. If the previous lids were more to your liking, you can still access them as a manual download. They are stored within the folder named “Legacy Lids”.

These lids print without supports regardless of orientation. Your slicer will likely warn you about this, just ignore it. Once printed, pinch the cantilever arms inward until you hear a crack. This breaks the built-in breakaway supports, and the lid is ready to use.

Bonus: I added a new lid with the Elder Sign icon. It has no purpose other than being cool. Use it if you feel like it, or don't. I won't judge (kinda).

The gallery on Makerworld is still showing the pictures with the older versions of the lids. I'm working on that.

Arkham Horror TCG connector Tokens

This is an extra-large “deluxe” custom Connector tokens for Arkham Horror: The Card Game. They are double-sided just like the original cardboard version.

https://makerworld.com/en/models/2886995-arkham-horror-tcg-double-sided-connector-token#profileId-3225037

Both sides have a smooth finish. One side is achieved by printing against the print bed. The other is achieved through ironing.

There are two versions of the pattern available for colouring as well.

This goes great with the Arkham Horror insert I made not too long ago.

Tutorial - Cantilever snap-fit lids (they last!)

The tutorial can be found here:

https://youtu.be/O77-MqhqZlU?si=EuKPnALlciQjaqRH

I use a cantilever principle, making these last quite a while before they wear out (possibly). There are small flexible arms under the lid which snap and lock the lid in place.

These lids are printed without any supports, whether you print with the top or bottom side facing the bed. This is a recipe that ends up in almost every insert that I've designed for board games. It has been tested over and over, and I stand by what's said in the tutorial.

I use Fusion 360 for this tutorial, but I believe the approach is agnostic to whatever tool you use.

Fair warning, I'm not a Youtuber, so the presentation is a bit... raw.

The above example is for my latest release of the HEAT - Pedal to the metal insert, which has a new extension out (Legends), so I wanted to adapt my "all-in-one box" solution

while making it compatible with sleeved cards.

HEAT - PEDAL TO THE METAL: Full Collection Insert

HEAT just got a new expansion. You know what this means...

I designed an insert that fits the core game and all four extensions in the original core box (Heavy Rain, Tunnel Vision, Rocky Road, and Legends). It works with sleeved cards, and more importantly, I managed to make it work so that there is no lid lift.

There is a tab system that also lets you save your progress between game sessions.

Every box uses a snap-fit lock that keeps things in place. The placement of the bins minimizes internal movement, so it's safe to store vertically.

You can download it here:

Tutorial for board game design: Parameters and Tolerance

I purposefully omitted parameters in my previous tutorial, so I figured I would cover them here. They are a fundamental part of my design process.

While I don't cover every feature under the parameters hood (for example, I could have talked about the import and export features), I do take some time to walk you through my approach and workflow when it comes to parameters. We squeeze the juice out of it, so to speak.

I also snuck in some extra content, notably how important it is to add tolerances to your design. As you will see, this was the perfect opportunity to implement some.

New and improved deck boxes for One Piece TCG

A while back I released a deck box that was specifically made to fit Ultra Pro One-Touch slabs for your Leader card. I got a lot of positive comments, but I probably got even more requests for modifications and changes.

Here they are! Check all the deck boxes here. They are all free to download.

  • Three versions are now available
    • Leader in normal sleeve (Dragon Shield)
    • Leader in toploader (ultra pro and gamegenic tested)
    • Leader in One-Touch magnetic case
  • All versions have a drawer for dice and tokens. These sections have been enlarged as well to hold bigger dice, such as, d20 spin downs.
  • Only the deck box needs supports. Everything else does not. You will get a warning when printing the lid or the drawer; ignore those. Once printed, you'll need to "break them loose." See the printing instructions for more details.
  • Improved printing quality for the lids and drawers. They were good enough, but they came out better and crisper and, as mentioned, no support shenanigans.

PS. Reposting since it seems I triggered the automoderator, which deleted my previous submission. Probably because there were too many links in my previous post.

Deck boxes for One Piece, Commander (EDH) and Cyberpunk

A while back I released a deck box for One Piece that was specifically made to fit Ultra Pro One-Touch slabs for your Leader card. I got a lot of positive comments, but I probably got even more requests for modifications and changes. Basically, the One-Touch slabs are super niche and most people don't really use them.

After getting back to the drawing board, I made the model more versatile and easy to modify. I made a version for sleeves and top loaders, and it was easy to adapt all three for other games.

All in all, I released 13 odd designs in a short time span. All models have been tested as well. They are available here:

Check out the rest of the deck box collection. I currently added some MTG Commander, One Piece, as well as a full starter kit for the upcoming Cyberpunk TCG.

  • Three versions for each game is now available
    • Leader in normal sleeve (Dragon Shield)
    • Leader in toploader (ultra pro and gamegenic tested)
    • Leader in One-Touch magnetic case
  • All versions have a drawer for dice and tokens. These sections have been enlarged as well to hold bigger dice, such as, d20 spin downs.
