What did you cut from your budget that you eventually brought back?

When I first started taking FIRE seriously, I looked at my spending and started cutting anything that felt unnecessary. Some of those changes were easy to stick with, but others didn't last. After a while, I realised that saving money isn't always worth it if you're making everyday life noticeably worse just to improve your savings rate a little. Maybe you stopped eating out, cancelled a subscription you actually used a lot, gave up travelling, switched to cheaper products or cut back on a hobby. Then at some point, you decided to bring it back because you genuinely missed it or because the amount you were saving wasn't making as much difference as you expected. I'm curious whether anyone else has had something like this happen. What did you cut when you first got into FIRE, how long did you manage without it, and what made you decide it was worth adding back to your budget? Did bringing it back change how you think about frugality, or did it simply help you figure out which expenses are actually important to you?

What's a Dutch word you learned from hearing people use it rather than from a lesson?

I've noticed that some of the Dutch I remember best is stuff I never actually sat down and studied. I heard someone say a word at work or in a normal conversation, then came across it again a few days later and eventually figured out what it meant from the situation.

Has that happened to you too? Maybe there was a word you kept hearing without understanding, until one day it finally clicked. Which word was it, and where did you pick it up?

What is one thing you would change about Leiden?

Nothing too ambitious - if you could change just one small thing about the city to make everyday life a little easier or more enjoyable, what would it be? It could be something about cycling, public transport, parking, green spaces, the city centre, or anything else you notice in your daily life.

What would you change?

What's the hardest part of FIRE that people rarely talk about?

Most FIRE discussions focus on things like investing, savings rates, taxes, or withdrawal strategies. Those topics are important, but they often don't capture the less obvious challenges.

If you've been pursuing FIRE for a while, what has been the most difficult part that doesn't get discussed enough? It could be staying motivated over the long term, balancing frugality with enjoying life, dealing with changing goals, explaining your choices to friends or family, or something completely different.

What surprised you the most once you were actually on the journey?
