Does Anybody Else Get Tired Of People Assuming That The Entire Regions Economy Runs On Tourism

Puerto Rican Here. This problem has always bothered me Bec whenever i talk about Puerto Rico and its issues people who cant be bothered to do a google search stroll in to my conversation and act like were poor Bec "Your only Industry Is tourism." It drives me nuts Bec anybody who bothers to do research would know that manufacturing is the economy's backbone. I imagine it comes from the fact that their only exposure to the Caribbean is tourism ad that flood their TV's and smartphones. but does it ever get to you.

Why do you guys put any weight in Puerto Rico's domestically held referendums when they're all controlled by the statehood party?

I'm genuinely curious. I mean if you actually take the time and do your homework beyond looking at the Wikipedia page and look up who organized these referendums outside of the 1967 referendum every single one has been organized by the statehood party and every single 1 has fell under scrutiny from opposition For tilting the scales toward statehood and if you look at the principles of self-determination it's meant to be an impartial process. I mean this is like trusting the results of a Mets Braves game with the umpire being Mr. Met. We're also talking about a political party that is so corrupt That they're blatant corruption triggered a mass protest ousting the governor. I mean why do you think Congress ignores these things. There's more to it than just simple oh they don't like puerto ricans or it's partisan politics. I mean think about this since 2012 not a single statehood admissions bill has ever advanced outside of committee to the floor of the house for a vote but in that same span of time a self-determination bill has so it shows you Congress is willing to address the Puerto Rico issue But they're not willing to trust the domestic process because Puerto Rico's politics is too corrupt to handle this process

What if Luis Muños Marin Had Taken Eisenhowers Offer For Puerto Rican Independence

For those who aren't aware in the mid 50s U.S.President Dwight D. Eisenhower Considered granting Puerto Rico independence to counter soviet Accusations of the US being imperialistic. Now the US would grant independence if a resolution passed the puerto rican legislative assembly. In the offer presented to governor Marin was financial assistance to ensure a smooth transition and even allowed Puerto Ricans who wished to retain U.S. citizenship to do so. On top of that the United States would go in front of the United Nations And sponsor the new nation Giving it real legitimacy on the global stage. However Marin chose to keep this under wraps And quickly killed it before the public in Puerto Rico could find out. So what would happen if he actually took the offer up

MMW: Sovereignty will overtake statehood in Puerto Rican polling

Now I want to make this abundantly clear I am not referring to the referendums Themselves I'm referring to the pre-referendum polling conducted. For those who aren't aware among the polls (which i cite as my evidence) conducted prior to the 2024 referendum one from local newspaper El Nuevo Dia showed Both sovereignty options( Independence and free association) Combined to tie with statehood at 44% Marking the first time that had ever happened in the history of puerto rican polling. When breaking down the results of the polling data among the demographics of 18-34 sovereignty options combined for 59% of support and 35-44 at 44% where statehood had its largest support amoung voters over 45-64 and 65+ at 51% each. Now with another rejection of statehood from washington and another uber unpopular pro statehood govt(the governor is polling at 13% approval 59% disapproval) the pro statehood party bleeding almost 8% of its core base in 1 year ,with the overall hostility towards latinos from the US govt and with 2028 marking gen alphas 1st cycle as eligible voters in puerto rico it is my firm belief that sovereignty will overtake statehood in the polls. Of course this depends on wether or not gov gonzales will make all valid non territoral options present on the referendum ballot when she inevitably uses an executive order to call 4 a referendum but if she does I am confident that by the date of september 2028 at least one poll will come out showing such numbers

As a Puerto Rican I find this annoying. I've spent the last few years Learning my own history and culture as part of trying to find who I am and the more I learn the more I become aware of the colonial nature of Puerto Rico. And Because of this I find it Infuriating that you Lump PR & DC together as if they are one in the same. DC Is a Civil Right Issue and Of course should be a state. Puerto Rico Is a 500 year Old Colonial Issue you inherited from Spain in which people have been killed, jailed and persecuted for having 'The Incorrect status position" By the United States. I sit here saying this knowing that I may not be alive today had my grandmother not left as a teen and avoided la operación Or my grandparents growing up being unable to speak Spanish in class bec you banned it. Or how my grandfather lived through the gag law where he couldn't own his own flag and had revolts break out in his own town. Puerto Rico deserves a genuine process of self determination in accordance with International law and not that local non-binding crap that even a 2013 senate committee hearing admitted was problematic which you guys pull up from Wikipedia like it somehow makes you an expert on Puerto Rican politics. I also find a lot of the so called support selfish bec so many responses about PR statehood end with 2 dem seats as if that's all we are and not a Latin American Nation with a Unique history and Culture.
