Martial Arts for Kids

I've been thinking about enrolling my 4yo in some sort of martial arts program, so I've been looking at local places. Max3 seems to be a popular place for West Mobile, but I've heard they put a lot of focus on belts and competitions (no idea if it's true or not!). I don't care so much about competitions and levels - more about learning skills and self-control.

Would Max3 be a good fit? What about other West Mobile martial arts training places? What's a good place to start?

Weird ID - what is this?

I have indoor only cats and zero indoor plants. I just found this vomited in my child's bedroom. All cats appear to be fine.

The only plant I can think of that would have flowers like this would be a coleus, which is bad for cats. Can anyone think of other common outdoor plants that might small flowers off the stem in this way?

I'm in Zone 9a.

Blaze

I was just watching Blaze with my preschooler, and I get it - a world run by vehicles with very few humans is bound to be different. But I have questions.

  1. What happened in this place where Blaze (a monster truck) needs to convert into a big rig to deliver medicine, bricks, and water? Where are the actual big rigs?

  2. Blaze and his pet human received a call from a construction site where the trucks are building "a very important building out of bricks." But they have no bricks. I mean if there are no big rigs, then I guess I understand that the bricks were never delivered. But then Blaze brings a small pallet of bricks. Was this very important building a pizza oven?

  3. The whole episode kept talking about mass, but in the human world mass can either be created or destroyed. So where does this extra mass come from?

When to Repot?

I received this in the spring, and it has grown and grown.

At what point do I repot?

What is the best potting method? This is clearly just in the nursery pot. Do I get another Nursery pot and planter? Is there a different kind of method that's better?

Thoughts When Trapped in My House By HFM

  1. Thank you Disney for releasing those 5 new episodes of Spidey the day my kid got sick. We now have them memorized.

  2. Bootsie is sentient and knows exactly what she's doing.

  3. Doc Ock gives a slight nod to the 4th wall in Aunt May's Flying House

  4. Bluey - Poor Lucky's Dad. He must think he lives next door to psychos and tolerates then because they might maul him in his sleep. Chili and Bingo chomp his legs in Asparagus, Shawn the hand attacks him in the street, and then Bandit steals his football. Probably more, but those are what I witnessed today.

  5. Bonus: we did an oatmeal bath, and my 4 yo asked if it could be eaten. I said, "Hmm, let's not." The response was, "Can I peepee in it?"

I'm ready for adult interactions 😭.

Stuffie Troubles 😭

Somewhere around turning 2, my LO attached to a stuffed bear. This bear has slept by my child every night since. It's comforted LO through nightmares and worries, through doctors and dentists, car trips and sickness. And then a month ago, my now 4 yo has found a new stuffie and the old one has been shoved to the side. Yesterday's news. So I confess it here, reddit. I'm devastated. I keep waiting for LO to start wanting the teddy again, but I think it is not to be 😭💔.

If I feel like this over a stuffie, what in the world am I going to do when LO breaks up with a HS sweetheart or long term partner?? 😱.

The Best Advice I've Received

My LO is a preschooler now, but it took 2.5 years for this advice to work, so now I pass it on:

When you find a pill, bring it to me and I'll give you candy!

I know. Don't use candy as a reward. Candy is sweet and delicious and I will give LO all the candy if it keeps them safe. It was a heart pill Granny left, and LO knew just what to do. I don't say it every day, but on occasion, especially if they notice my own pills. One time I spilled a whole bottle and LO got reminded frequently for the next few days because I was afraid I'd missed one. I emphasize that it's medicine for me but could hurt them or the pets, so bring pills to me and get a reward.

And IT WORKED!! I'm so frazzled that LO could have eaten it and I would have no idea what was wrong until it was too late. 😭

Cannibalism? Or just normal bird fun?

In Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog, Duckling wants to know if it tastes like chicken. I feel like it's acceptable to consider pigeons to eat everything, but what about ducks? Should ducks know what chicken taste like? Now, we know that Duckling is a manipulative little pest, but should he know what chicken tastes like? Aren't ducks and chickens like cousins?

Also on a whole different note, Pigeon and Piggie are at the very least acquaintances. Are we hoping that the hot dog is all beef? What's the likelihood of a 100% beef hot dog just laying on the ground?

Child Appropriate Super Hero Stories

My preschooler and I have been listening to the old Power Records Super Hero dramas. So far they have been kid friendly enough, but kid is wanting stories about characters that don't seem to appear in the dramas or aren't there much - Two-Face, Flash, Captain America, Hawk-Man / Hawkgirl specifically.

We've read some of the books, but kid wants more. We're about to go on a long trip, so I need listening ideas

Not a Banana Pepper

I bought this as a seedling at a local garden sale. I could have sworn it was labeled banana pepper, but it has purple flowers and a dark purple (almost black) pepper. 1. What is it?

  1. and how will I know it's ripe?

  2. Will it kill me?

Sonic Movies

Not a conspiracy exactly, but Sonic the Hedgehog 3 should not be as good as it is. Having spent the first week of summer break alternating between playing in the rain and watching the three Sonic movies, I have decided that Sonic 3 is actually the best. I prefer Sonic 1 over 2, but Rotten Tomatoes and the audience consider it kind of a toss-up. But really? A third movie in a series that's not supposed to be a trilogy outperforming the first two is kind of amazing. But it's also raising the bar for the fourth movie. Maybe bye 2027 my kid will be ready to sit through a whole movie in a movie theater.

Thirsty Succulent may have fever 😭

We've had 6 inches of rain today, and my succulent was still thirsty! My toddler watered it some more, but I think it needs more. Does it have a fever? Is there a plant vet available on the weekends??

Don't get me wrong - we love Handyman Hal! But let's be real. For every "Look at this totally awesome big truck!" You've got:

-- Handyman Hal shows how clean the beaches are.

-- Handyman Hal shows tourists the totally awesome water park.

-- Handyman Hal tells tourists about the Jeep Beach Ride.

-- Handyman Hal shows tourists where to buy the best candy and toys, including off brand Build-a-Bear.

-- Handyman Hal shows tourists the totally awesome trampoline park for rainy days.

-- My current favorite: Handyman Hal shows tourists where to do laundry.

I love that he uses and promotes all these local small businesses, but really - laundry??
