Keeping overhead costs under control is becoming increasingly difficult this year with the rising prices of basic clinical supplies and staff wages. I am running a solo practice and trying to analyze every single line item on my profit and loss statement to find areas where we can trim the fat.

We audited our software subscriptions recently to see what we actually need. My office currently runs Dentimax for our practice management and billing which handles our needs perfectly well without crazy monthly fees. I am now looking closely at our lab bills and inventory management systems.

What percentage of your total collections is typically allocated to clinical supplies right now? I feel like my supply budget has crept up significantly and I am wondering if joining a bulk purchasing group is actually worth the membership hassle.

The "Majuu" Obsession in Rift Valley: Genuine Opportunity or Toxic Peer Pressure?

Hey guys,

I need us to have an honest conversation about this exploding trend of sending kids abroad, especially what’s happening right now in the Rift Valley/Kalenjin land.

Lately, it feels like every single week there is a harambee in my village. We are talking fundraisers of 2 million to 4 million shillings. Families are selling prime ancestral land, taking massive loans, and draining community pockets just so their son or daughter can shift to Majuu for studies or work. It has literally become a competition—family after family, nobody wants their child to be left behind.

But I’m looking at this and starting to feel like it’s becoming a toxic cycle of societal pressure.

Don't get me wrong, I know the Kenyan job market is in the trenches right now and parents just want a better future for their kids. But it makes me wonder:

  1. Is our higher education system that fucked up? Are there no universities left in Kenya that can offer a proper degree or Master's, or is a local degree now viewed as an automatic ticket to poverty?
  2. What happens to the families left behind? If you can’t afford the 3 million for a visa and tuition, is your family just doomed? The pressure on parents who can't afford this must be driving them crazy.
  3. Is the return on investment (ROI) even guaranteed anymore? We’ve all heard the horror stories of people landing abroad only to end up stranded, doing undocumented odd jobs, or failing to match the lifestyle they promised back home.

Is this massive sacrifice truly the right thing to do considering how Kenya is right now, or have we let peer pressure convince us that leaving the country is the only way to survive?

I want to hear your honest opinions. If you’ve been through this, or if your family is planning one of these fundraisers, what’s the reality on the ground? Are we building futures or just funding an illusion?

Looking for a Serious Farming Partner in Baringo | 1.5 Acres Near Cheploch River With Huge Irrigation Potential

So, I’ve been sitting on a thought for like 3 to 4 years now and I think it’s finally time to just do it.

I have a 1.5-acre farm back home in Baringo, right near Cheploach. The soil there is that rich red volcanic type—super fertile. I started working it about three seasons ago. First season I did millet and the harvest was amazing. Second season I mixed millet, beans, dengu, and maize, and again, we hit a jackpot.

Last year, I decided to go big on maize and beans. But man, things happened. Right around weeding time, I completely ran out of cash. I managed to weed only half the farm, and the other half just got swallowed by weeds and wasted. I was so heartbroken and broke that I literally said "fuck farming" and headed to Nairobi to look for a job, thinking I'd save up.

Fast forward to now (been in the city 1.5 years)—the job market here is a joke. Every gig I get lasts barely 1 to 3 months, and it’s purely hand-to-mouth. I can’t even sustain myself properly, let alone save.

So I’ve decided I’m going back to the village. But here’s the catch: I need a partner.

People have approached me to rent out the farm, but I’ve refused because I know this place is a literal goldmine if handled right. There’s a permanent river passing less than 150 meters away. It’s not seasonal, it has water all year round. My dream has always been to set up a small irrigation project so we don’t rely on rain. You can grow almost anything here—tomatoes, onions, managu, hoho, garlic, watermelons, you name it.

I’m looking for someone serious—ideally around Baringo, Kabarnet, Eldama Ravine, Nakuru, eldoret or nearby areas—who is passionate about farming and has some capital to inject. I’ll bring the land, my time, and the ground management (I’ll be there physically putting in the work), we split costs/inputs, and we share the profits.

We've tried a few iterations of a scoring system for the bids we receive, weighting things like contract size, timeline, competitive landscape, customer relationship but the weights always feel arbitrary and we never go back to validate whether they predicted anything. Can’t keep up with forms from contractors

We hire 20-30 contractors/month for events. Each one fills a W9, insurance cert, and emergency contact form. I’m downloading, renaming, uploading to Drive, then updating Airtable. It’s 3 hours/day of pure data extraction automation hell.

We already have a lot of manual work with documents and internal reporting, then AI got added to the discussion. I don’t really get what would actually change day to day. Most tools we use already feel automatic but at the slightest inconvenience, we go back to spreadsheets anyway.
