I’ve always found jury trials in Anglosphere countries very interesting. Does that make sense? Is a random person really capable of correctly interpreting the evidence and the law and reaching a verdict?

Kurds in Japan

Recently, there's been talk in Japan about Kurds causing problems. However, I've researched this from many different sources online, and they all claim there are between 2,000 and a maximum of 3,500 Kurds in Japan. But yes, this population is concentrated in a small number of regions. It seems very strange to me that such a small community is making headlines. Even if many of them are very problematic, how much difference can 2,000 or 3,000 people make in a country of 120 million?

How did Japan forgive the United States so quickly, despite the hostility and two atomic bombs during WW2, and become one of its most loyal allies shortly after the end of WW2?

I've always found it fascinating that the friendship between the US and Japan is even stronger than the one between the US and Europe.

Thoughts on the record high volume of Turkish travel to the Greek islands?

1.4 million Turkish citizens made trips to the Greek islands in the last year. This is a record for now. Considering that the total number of the Turkish citizens traveling to the rest of the whole Schengen area excluding Greek islands in the last year was just over 1.5 million, this is an incredible figure.

One reason is that Turkish citizens are subject to visa in the Schengen area, and obtaining a Schengen visa requires securing an appointment and gathering up to 30 pages of documents, which acts as a deterrent to travel. However, Greece (for only some Greek islands) allows Turkish citizens to obtain visas directly at the border, not at the consulates, only for certain Greek islands, without any strict criteria. This is currently the only exception to the common Schengen visa policy. This is also attracting those who don't want to deal with Schengen visas to the Greek islands.

The second reason is that it certainly wasn't always the case, but now many people feel that the Greek islands are cheaper than Turkey. Previously, Turkey was cheaper than Greece and Greek islands in terms of foreign currencies like the € and the $, but now the opposite is true.

Why is there no US visa waiver?

In the EU, only citizens of Bulgaria, Romania, and Cyprus still need a visa to enter the US.

Romania was almost about to get visa exemption until Trump was elected and froze the process.

However, Cyprus does not have visa exemption and has never even come this close to it.

What is it that scares the US about granting this to Cyprus? A country with a GDP per capita of $45,000 and a population of 700,000 should be considered low-risk.

Key information about the Schengen visa digitalization plan

* It is not currently in effect in any way. It is planned to come into effect around 2030. However, when it does, a 7-year transition period will begin. During the transition period, countries that wish to can accept applications in the traditional way, while others can accept them online. Once the transition period ends, all countries will be required to accept visa applications online.

* All visa applications will be submitted online through the "EU Common Visa Application Platform". Based on the information provided in the platform application form, the platform will forward the application to the country that should evaluate it.

* Applicants will only need to visit the application center to register their passport, have their photo taken, and provide their fingerprints. The entire application process will be online. Application documents will not be submitted to the application center; the application must be completed online.

* You will no longer need to surrender your passport while your application is being processed.

* The visa fee must be paid online using a credit card, debit card, or similar method. If visiting an application center is necessary (for passport registration, photo taking, and fingerprinting), a fee must also be paid at the application center. If visiting an application center is not required, only the visa fee needs to be paid.

* If you meet the following two criteria, you won't need to visit an application center at all, and the entire process will be online:

  1. Your passport hasn't been changed since your last visit to the application center.

* The form must be completed online.

* All supporting documents (if not already digital) will be submitted individually in digital format, such as PDF, either by scanning or taking clear photos with a smartphone.

* If the visa is approved, you will be notified by email and sent a visa document containing a 2D barcode. Authorities will be able to scan this document to verify it is a genuine visa. Sticker visas will be abolished.

Turkey is closing some parks to the public for a certain period so that Macron can go for a morning run during the NATO summit. This is causing controversy. Thoughts?

Why do even perfectly normal questions sometimes get heavily downvoted here?

Since this subreddit is called "Schengen visa," it's normal, I think, that the people here are those who are trying to enter the Schengen area.

But sometimes I see a lot of people "trying to keep others outside the Schengen area" and therefore spending time on this subreddit. They are constantly downvoting people or snapping at anyone who expresses even the slightest negative opinion about the Schengen visa process, saying "if you don't like it, don't come."

Why is the UK overly strict regarding visas for Europeans outside the EU or EEA?

The UK maintains an extremely strict visa regime for countries like Serbia and North Macedonia.

Citizens of these countries require a visa not only to enter the UK but even if they are merely changing flights at the airport without passing through border control.

By the way, most countries in Latin America can enter the UK without a visa.

The UK applies a visa regime to non-EU Western Balkan countries that is as stringent as the one imposed on Afghanistan.

It does not allow entry with an Irish visa for Western Balkan citizens, a facility that is available to certain other countries, such as India and China.
