Hi.
I'm trying for a minimalist setup. I have a Microfreak that lacks effects.
Looking at the MPC Sample for drum machine and ambient sampling.
I'd like to use the effects of the MPC onto the Microfreak.
Her's what the manual says
----
Monitor:
• On: Audio from the selected Source is always monitored
----
Does it mean I can plug the Microfreak through the MPC, to use it as a source for sampling, apply effects to it and mix it with the sound from the MPC without other devices ?
I like drum machines. I use them mostly live and take them as instruments.
I want to be able to create and modify on the fly easily.
I may use software if I need to program long and precise patterns but for live use I want hardware boxes.
I tend to prefer samples over synth drums.
I mostly play ambient jazz/rock.
I am fortunate that what I like isn't expensive after all.
After trying many of them, expensive of not, Here are the ones I keep :
Yamaha DTX550k
These are a set of electronic drums, but I thought I'd mention them. They are mostly for drum practice and jamming with friends, or whenever a full kit is needed. There is a simple sequencer on it that I use to record on the fly, often with just a part of the set.
cons : can't fully be used like a drum machine, although the hardware would allow it. Takes room, it's a drum set.
Korg Volca Sample 2
Surprisingly the one I use the most live. The workflow is extremely efficient and once used to it, you can create whatever you need very quickly. Odd time signatures, samples that create a background, beats that can morph into granular synthesis on the fly. You're always in control, no use of random alterations. The toch key ribbon, common to most Volcas is incredible to edit beats, much more efficient than sensitive pads. The 10 channels allow for very rich layers of tone.
cons : limited sample memory and resolution, limited room for patterns, one way midi.
Stylophone Beat
This one was unexpected. I bought it out of curiosity, never put it down. Extremely fast and efficient workflow. What you can achieve from such a little box and simple controls is mesmerizing. Any idea comes out the way you want it within seconds and despite the limited sequencer, the 13 voice polyphony and infra bass tones allow very thick textures.
A precious asset for live use, practice and anything.
cons : 32 steps with no internal divisions. That's one four time bar of 32th notes, 2 of 16ths or 4 of 8ths. Flimsy construction (had to replace the stylus once already), no cv, sync or midi. Tone is what it is, no way to alter it.
Zoom RT-323
I use it to program full songs. It has everything to do it easily and efficiently with a very decent tone.
cons : next to impossible to edit on the fly. It takes time to navigate it and there are only a few alterations possible of the tone.
What I tried and didn't keep
For various reasons, typically one of these : felt like an utility rather than an instrument, a dumb limitation got me mad, workflow uselessly complicated or not compliant with live edition, too much menu diving, sound or feel too far away from real drum or perc, forcing you into EDM.
Boss DR-880, TR-707, TR-6S
Elektron Model : Samples
Novation Circuit Rhythm
Korg Volca Beats, Volca Drum
Alesis SR-16, SR-18
Yamaha RX-15, Seqtrak
Akai MPC Sample, Rhythm Wolf
Arturia Drumbrute Impact
I don't think any of these is inherently bad, just not what fits my taste and use.
I am open to suggestions and tips. I eventually plan to give a try to the Sonicware LOFI-12 XT.
Cheers !

Here are some of the pedals I keep around whatever happens. Some of them I have had since last century.
Some common, some unusual, all of them fabulous at what they do, at least for me. Most are inexpensive and well worth a try.
I use active cabs with no integrated preamp, so pedals are essential to my tone. Please tell me what you think
Guyatone TZ-2 : orange mini pedal based on the Univox Superfuzz. It delivers a massive wall of saw waves with hints of octave.
Korg AX-3000B : Sounds are very outdated but the interface is unmatched. I use it exclusively with a PC. It supports MIDI CC, program changes, expression and it even has an 8 step sequencer. Perfect to foot control everything.
Zoom B3 : Extremely well thought multi with excellent real time controls. You can use it like 3 separate pedals, each with a dedicated screen. It works on USB, as an audio interface, built-in DI, usable sounds for everything. The most recent iterations like the B6 sound a tad better but I find less practical. It's my go-to box for everything. A B3 and an expression pedal could be all I need.
Catalinbread Heliotrope : This one is described as an analog bit crusher. I'm not entirely sure what happens inside. There is a square fuzz with a ring modulator. It eats up your signal and turns it into things either truly terrible of very musical depending on your luck. I love to create drones out of it.
TC Electronic SCF : First edition. Chorus-flanger-vibrato. A classic, vintage unit. Sounds clean and cold as ice, sings like a bird in a winter morning.
Ibanez LF-7 : A pedal made to sound like a lofi, malfunctioning unit. Essentially a very dirty fuzz-dist to emulate a dying PA, low and hi pass filters and a level with huge boost. It complies with line, console and instrument levels. If you want to sound derelict, ancient and dusty, there is no equivalent to this pedal.
EHX Freeze : It takes a pic of whatever you're playing and keeps it playing while you do something else. It can be used like a sustain pedal, to get drones or chords to back your melodies. It can also be used like an oscillator to feed a loop pedal or delay. I LOVE using drones so this one gets me a lot of use.
Fishman Pro-EQ Platinum Bass : It's a preamp DI, one of several I own. I use this one specifically when I want clean, punchy tones. It has a basic compressor, phase switch for DI, a hi-pass filter to get rid of rumble, 5 band EQ, gain and level to a very bright and clean, stage. It makes instruments shine in the mix. I have no other way to say it.
EHX Bass Micro Synth : There are newer, fancier units on the market. This one is special though. It reacts like an instrument, much like an actual synth would. Play with sliders, feed it bad notes and glitches, there's always interesting stuff happening at the output.
Wounded Paw Blender : 3 mixable parallel/series loops and a clean preamp with bass treble. Buffers at all stages so you can use it to mix anything and push any pedal into any other one, all with boosts and precise level adjustments. An utility box to do everything you want. Mix 3 instruments, have separate lines of effects and EQ, get pedals to self oscillate and a lot of other things. Like a Boss LS-2, just a lot more powerful.
This nen beast power is deadly, merciless and powerful. Its it ever revealed who Chrollo got it from ?
Bonjour.
