Deep in Chile's Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, an estimated 60,000 tonnes of discarded clothing have accumulated, creating a massive textile waste site. Much of the clothing arrives through the global second-hand trade, but garments that cannot be resold are often illegally dumped or burned, leaving a growing environmental problem.

Many modern clothes are made from synthetic fibers like polyester, which can take decades to break down. As they weather in the desert, they release microplastics into the environment, while burning them produces harmful air pollution. The enormous clothing piles highlight the hidden environmental cost of fast fashion and overconsumption.

Sharing a deeply personal story, Brunson recalled a magical Christmas Day at the United Center where his path crossed with Kobe Bryant. The brief interaction didn't just end with a rare pair of sneakers it gave him a blueprint for the rest of his life.

"I just remember him walking in the hallway. As a teenager, you're trying to keep your cool. So I said hi, shook his hand. Kobe said something that to this day I will never forget. He said, 'Why work if you don't want to be the best?' That quote will sit with me forever."

But the Black Mamba wasn't done making it an unforgettable holiday for the young guard:

"He had these red high-top Kobe nines, the Christmas nines, and the shoes just kind of fell into my hand. He's like, 'Here you go. These for you.' When I got in the car to go home, I looked at it and I was like, 'Oh, I'm definitely wearing these.'"

Decades later, Brunson has carried that exact work ethic all the way to the top of the basketball world. Kobe didn't just pass down a pair of legendary kicks that day; he passed the torch of a relentless mindset.
