Line Dances - learning online

I'm trying to work on my movement skills, and in the past line dances have stuck out as a great way to improve it for WCS. I'm far from event centres so my thinking is that learning line dances on my own will help my personal movement skills. Is there a good channel or place to learn new line dances online? Also what are some of the best ones to try and learn?

How do I say no to people?

Where I often struggle with diet is in the social context. Going out to eat or even at work, or at home… - people push food on me. Maybe because I’m a bigger guy already. When I’m mentally strong I can say no - but I’m not going to lie - when it’s been a hell of day, and then family friends or colleagues are pushing food - sometimes I just don’t want another micro-fight and I’ll just cave and eat what’s on offer.

I would love help with this - when I was single and alone I could control my food intake much more. Any help with the psychology of food is welcome . I currently deal with a lot of burnout - so my capacity to push back is limited - though I am willing to try again.

Is walking / running the best exercise for weight loss?

I have gained and lost 50 pounds about 5 times. In my experience - running and especially walking seems to be the best way to lose the weight. I don’t have much of a rationale for this beyond my personal experiences. I’ve done sports and I also lift weights. But only when I did long form walking and running did I lose weight. There’s a fitness trainer
I follow named Dan John who is a big proponent of walking.

Right now I’m struggling with the weight loss, and I have been rowing and using heavy kettlebells, but again I’m stuck and I’m considering just trying long walks again. Anyone want to chime in on this?

Weight loss plan - 43M - 40 pounds

I am a detrained athlete who has lost and regained
50 pounds about 6 times over the last 2 decades. It’s tough for me to try this again. It’s been a lot of success and setback trying to take care of my health and weight. But I want to be a better husband and live a long life for the sake of myself and a potential family. So the stakes are different now and I plan to make this more about sustainability over time into something that just works in my life naturally. The last five years have been so stressful with so much hardship and change that I need to give myself grace for the weight I gained. Now things are calm and stable again.

The evolving plan:

  1. Use lose it and a scale to track what I eat daily. This is something I detest but I will try to spin it into something positive. Any suggestions on how to make tracking food fun - I’m listening. I have the plan setup on the app - Accelerated high protein plan. So about 2000ish calories a day is my budget. I would love anything to reduce friction in this process because I don’t like spending time on yet another app tracking things.

  2. Exercise - this is the part I like. I can exercise a long time. I have a home gym with a rower, kettlebells, and media screen for apple fitness and just dance. I’ll be in there a lot. Let’s say 30 minutes a day. It’s my rejuvenation cave. As well Walk the dog with my wife more often.

  3. Hacks - Drink flavored water. Get some decaf coffee again - it’s a good appetite suppressant. Eat out much less - no more drive through. Treats only on the weekend. Chew gum.

  4. Activities - I have joined a pickleball club. Later in the year I hope to try soccer near me. In my area A well is a virtual golf simulator with leagues. I hope to buy some frisbees soon as we back onto a park and me and my wife could go toss the frisbee in the evening. Also continue work in the garden.

  5. Vices to remove - I love my zero beers. But I’ll try and limit them. They are pretty low calorie (40). Maybe only 1 per day. I’m going to try and make hop water instead.

  6. Habits - weigh every morning but only note the weekly trends.

  7. Big goal - Walking and biking to work in the fall.

Any other advice welcome. I’m getting into middle age and this is getting tougher, so basically I’m trying to make life more conducive to being active and healthier naturally.

Easiest way to add all Just Dance to home gym?

I’m building my home gym, and I’m new to Just Dance but I love it. I have a Nintendo switch, and I basically just want to stock my gym with as much Just Dance as possible.

Whats the best way to get as much of it? Should I go out and buy each edition for the switch? Is there a way to simply get a huge collection? I’ve heard of Just Dance + Can someone explain that to me? Can I just subscribe to get all of the older songs? I’m less inclines to just “progress” and I’d love it if I could just pick from all the songs.

Is Prodigy a legit Voyager spinoff / continuation?

I’m rewatching Voyager. I know the ending. I was always disappointed the end was so abrupt. I’m wondering if Prodigy is worth watching as a post-logue that wraps up some loose ends (or any for that matter, they just arrived at Earth in end game and the story just stopped)

Planning on stopping toprimate

I’m only on a low dose of 25mg. Been on it 2 years…but I’m ready to try going off. I know it’s a low dose but I’m nervous. I don’t like neurological side effects at all. I plan to cut the pill in half for 2 weeks and then try to go to zero. Wish me luck, and feel free to tell me that it’s a low dose it should be easy .

Looking for Motivational help / midlife depression

I’m almost 44. I’ve spent my life building my life. Build build build. Also fight fight fight. Lots of failures and falling down and getting back up. I’ve sort of made it to my promised land. A house, a career, a wife, a dog, maybe a family. It has not been easy, but I / we did it.

But dammit I’m dog tired. And I’m finding it hard to find the joy right now. I’m burned out no doubt. But my mind just says “you’ve done all the things”. I want to raise a kid, but I want to be much happier than this. I suppose this is a kind of mid life crisis. I know better than to go buy some fancy car. What can I do to help myself? How can I make my 40s really great? Btw I do see a psychologist - it’s been a little while but I will see him soon.

I do have free time right now. I want to help my mental health. So yeah, I’m finding my 40s tough, very easy to ruminate on the past. Would love some advice on how to get my mojo back and look forward again rather than backward.

If you had 1 month just for yourself - what would you do?

I have a period of open time coming. It’s been 7 years of high intensity and I can’t remember when I’ve had a window of time that’s really mostly my own. I don’t know if I’ll ever get it again. What I mean is - we are planning to have kids. With 4-6 weeks holidays, no kids, and no huge stressors on the plate, I have a chance to take care of myself

So I’m trying to wrap my head around what is going to be good for me. I think low pressure living and rest is what I need as I suspect I have low grade burnout. But I want to spend time on getting healthy again. I’m about 50 pounds overweight. I’d like to bike a lot this summer. Work in the garden and yard. Less time online. I’ll clean up the house that we moved into last year. But hopefully spending a good amount of time just napping when I feel like it, walking the dog, or just calling a friend. Maybe 50% of the time compelling myself to do tasks that are inportant and the rest of the time just going where my spirit takes me. Enjoying the R&R.

What would you do with this kind of time?

Has anyone ever taken a long term break from life / sabbatical with success?

I posted earlier about how I’m a long term veteran. With anxiety. I’ve done done of things to help myself these past 6 years with lots of baby step improvements. Now I’m doing quite well and am loving a good life, but I still live with anxiety and low grade symptoms daily.

Something I’ve thought about doing but never tried is taking a leave from work, and even from personal responsibilities to simply take care of myself. Like
A 3-6 month sabbatical of sorts. Just live life gracefully with an emphasis on living well - enjoying walks, fresh air, naps, low stimulation time, seeing friends and people I love. Plenty of rest and good food.

Anyone ever give themselves a personal sabbatical / life holiday of sorts?

Revisiting my anxiety and comorbid problems after years - seeking advice from long term affected people

I’m a mature anxiety prone person. What I mean by that is 6 years ago I had my first true intense panic attack where everything changed. I spent a good 3 years suffering and then learning how to adjust my psychology to accept my symptoms which overlapped with migraine type symptoms. Ensuing I’ve never fully been “better” but what I’ve learned also is that my entire life looking back has been wracked by waves of mental health struggle often invisible to me, but now I do have the awareness to see that I’ve been suffering my whole life in different ways at various times. I’m mature in that I’ve learned how to live side by side with the beast and walk with it while living a full life.

Examples: 6 years prior I was in debt, and struggling with cannabis use. Now I’m sober, married, and own a home with my wife. I’ve done this while working full time and dealing with the death of my father. I have had to deal with my anxious mind every step of the way, and I constantly am telling it no, whatever, or putting my focus elsewhere. The positive change has been incredible.

But like a diabetic, I still have a persistent daily
problem. I’m still anxious and depressive me, with symptoms overlapping in migraine, and I don’t get why my brain never wants to feel safe or calm down.

I have stretch of time opening up to pursue what I need to do next to quell anxious me, or even as we all wonder, is there some other issue at play? My medical tests over the years have always been in the clear minus being 40 pounds overweight.

So anyone have advice? I’m a well seasoned anxiety person at this point. I’m going to try and get some
better exercise and diet back in my life and a bit more fun social time (wedding planning for 18 months was a nerve wracking as well). Also I want to be off the phone more as I think the mental
stim from digital devices has never been helpful even way back when I played an NES as a kid. Biggest decision I have to make is do try duloxetine SNRI as both a psychiatrist and neurologist have recommended to me. I am going off my low dose 25mg topirimate because I think it makes me slightly dumb.

But maybe I don’t know what I don’t know. Are there any others here long on the path who want to coach me a bit? One thing that fascinated me the other day at my wedding was I got to see my whole extended family vs my fiancées family. I think this problem is in my families genetic code. We are all so quiet and frozen. And also interesting…there is so much fewer of us. I think it’s actually damaging my families ability to go out and succeed in the world. I want to solve this, if not for me, than to help the kids me and my financee want to have.

Thank you for thinking about this

What qualifies for suspension at your schools?

Seems kids can throw heavy objects, hit and swear at others, go to the office, have a snack and be sent back without any talk of suspension any more.

Do your schools still suspend kids? In school? Out of school? Or is violence now just acceptable behaviour in schools? What is the criteria for a school suspension?

Beauty - seeking discussion and information

When speaking of the tenants of what is good, true and beautiful, the first two concepts make much sense to me, and are usually the main source of discussion in philosophical videos. We are all seeking what is true in the efforts of having a good world for ourselves and others. We don’t always agree, but I think we agree that those values are a fundamental part of what drives humanity.

Now beauty we all agree is part of humanity as well. But where I struggle is whether it always an intrinsic positive. Beauty is used in marketing, it used in seduction, it can capture us, and at least for me, it can make me stray from myself. The opposite is true, something beautiful can also invigorate and refresh me and remind me life is more than work and toil.

I feel my philosophical grasp of the concept of beauty is light, so I’d really enjoy any videos or resources to read on the subject. Any discussion here is welcome.
