Denji defeated Makima in the physical fight, but she defeated him in the “mental battle,” leaving deep scars on him. Even in the new timeline, he remains subordinate to the Control Devil. Well, at least for his sake, she’s not even half as bad as Makima.

Denji was willing to leave behind the life he considered perfect and the people he cared about just to run away with Reze, while he couldn't even prioritize Asa over the Devil who made her life a living hell. That's the difference. Denji would choose Reze over Asa without a second thought.

Not even getting into ship wars, but it’s honestly hilarious how the AsaDen shippers spent years being so arrogant about their ship being "canon" while putting down everyone else’s ships, only for Denji and Asa’s relationship to end up being one big nothing burger
