Everything Wrong With Code Lyoko - Episode 40: Attack Of The Zombies
DISCLAIMER: This is just supposed to be a humorous post, parodying the series "Everything Wrong With..." by CinemaSins, inspired by u/Valha28's posts on r/gumball parodying the same series. This is NOT a critique of the show, and while some things I sin in this series might actually be things I'd criticize in an actual critique, most of the things I'll sin are nitpicks, and the whole series is just made for good fun.
With that out of the way, welcome to Everything Wrong With: Attack Of The Zombies!
Yumi: Hi! So how did the Italian test go?
Jeremy: I couldn't stream two words together!
As someone who used to study Chinese, RELATABLE. AS. FUCK. -1
Though, how can he struggle SO MUCH with Italian if, in parallel, he seems to be pretty good at speaking basic Turkish, which is WAY less close to French than Italian? +1
Odd says an Italian sentence that Jeremy doesn't understand
Odd: It means "you're really lame at Italian, Jeremy", old buddy!
Jeremy: You see? I didn't even get that!
I mean, for his defense, that was a complex sentence. I speak French and English fluently, and I learned or tried to learn A LOT of other languages in my life, and I can confidently say that you don't necessarily need to learn these sentences in a complex way to be understood. I lived in Mexico for a few months and despite only knowing basic Spanish, I managed to be understood. +1
Sissi: My dear Milly, your paper doesn't have any readers!
Wishful thinking. +1
Odd: No danger of that, Sissi! You need a brain to think!
Sissi: Good old Odd is unfunny as ever. Shut up, will you!
Usually I don't really factor in how good the English translation is, but here they removed what's perhaps one of the funniest Sissi quotes. In the original French version, she literally turned Odd's own roast against him by saying smth like "Yep, and so do you to crack good jokes!". They removed this in the English version, and I'M PISSED. +3
Jeremy: I didn't say that Kiwi was stupid!
Odd: No, you said he was brainless!
Jeremy: Well if you throw a stick, he won't run and fetch it!
Odd: Well, neither would you! Does that make you brainless?
Hahahahahahaha -1
Tamiya: Good doggy!
Kiwi bites Tamiya's hand
Tamiya: Ow!
Tamiya's vision blurs and she turns into a zombie
First, as someone who only recently overcame cynophobia (fear of dogs), thanks for the trauma flashbacks. +1
Then, 4Kids ahh censorship strikes. +1
Milly is taking a shower, when Tamiya attacks her
It's not very nice to jumpscare viewers. +2
Though, I'm pretty sure the way Milly gets attacked in the showers is a reference to Alfred Hitchcock's Psychose, and if it is, that's awesome. S-Tier reference here. -3
Jeremy: Who's Doctor Shrenk?
Odd: The psycho-TV brain surgeon in Hospital of Horrors!
Odd literally talked about this show 2 episodes ago and even compared Jeremy to Dr.Shrenk. +1
Hiroki: Was that Ulrich, your boyfriend?
Yumi: Hiroki, for the 100 000th time, he is not my boyfriend!
SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH. +5
Rosa: Hey, what's going on?
Odd: Nothing! We're surrounded by zombies, ma'am!
Rosa: Zom... faints
Hahaha, her reaction is gold! -1
Though, how did she believe it so easily without even questioning him? +1
Nicholas: The problem with the living dead is that you can't kill them, because they're already dead! Hehe.
Rosa, who was starting to wake up, faints again
Why did you get scared this time? You had no way of indicating that he wasn't talking about a movie. +3
William: No! I'm not joking! the operator hangs up the call, so William tries to call another one Zombies! That's right, like in Out Of The Tomb!
Why don't you just lie and say that there's an intrusion in the school? +1
William: Sorry. I'm the oldest one here (...)
Um, you're not. Rosa is. +1
William: A supercomputer that lets you go into a virtual universe where you have to battle an evil enemy called X.A.N.A...
Jeremy: Um, yes. When you put it that way, I admit it sounds a little weird.
Aelita: If we want to stop this zombie attack, Odd, Jeremy and I have to get to the factory right now!
William: Look, I'm sorry, but I don't believe you, so we're all staying together!
Why? In a situation where zombies are roaming around the school, Jeremy's story becomes much more believable. SOMETHING has to have caused this zombie epidemic. +5
Herb: Look! They're getting away!
Why does this shot look like a soyjak pointing meme? +1
Odd: Wait, there's Kiwi! Look!
He found me! See how smart he is?
giggles You little diggity-dog!
Milly: Hey! That's the same dog we saw in the hallway just before Tamiya got zombie-fied! Wait, Odd!
Kiwi bites Odd's hand
Odd: Ow! Kiwi! What's wrong with you?
Odd sees the X.A.N.A sign on Kiwi's eyes
Odd: X.A.N.A...
Kiwi goes away, and Odd starts to transform into a zombie
Why is Odd so stupid here, why didn't Milly try to push him away from Kiwi, why did he not even see the X.A.N.A sign on his dog's eyes BEFORE being bitten, WHY IS SCENE? +10
William: So you're saying that Kiwi is possessed by this X.A.N.A?
Jeremy: Right. But thanks to you, Kiwi's somewhere, ready to bite us! What's more, we're surrounded by an army of the living dead. If you had let us out before, we wouldn't be in this mess.
William: Listen, if you'd gone out, you might be a zombie yourself by now, idiot!
Sigh. Staying here won't prevent the zombies from attacking you, it will only delay it. Also, if they managed to get out, the whole Odd fiasco would have not happened. +3
Sissi: Open up! It's me, Sissi!
Open up, I said! I'm not one of them!
Herb: She's lying.
Um, nope. The fact that she's SPEAKING should show that she is not a zombie. What's with everyone being braindead in zombie episodes of TV shows? +5
Ulrich kicks Zombie William to the ground
Ulrich: That one's on me!
Really bro? After everything you two have been through in the previous episode?
2 characters have a moment that brings them closer together due to a X.A.N.A attack but it goes nowhere after this episode cliché +3
Yumi: You're getting better Jeremy! Soon we'll be landing right on top of them!
Nice foreshadowing. -1
Jeremy: If I get zombified, I won't be able to launch the return in time and...I don't wanna talk about the mess we'll be in!
Just give the RTTP instructions to Yumi right away! Better safe than sorry! +1
Yumi: We're gonna try to push our way through!
Jeremy: That's suicide!
Huh. Kind of surprising to hear this word when the show often (not always, but often) hesitates to use the word "dead". +1
Also, no, that's not suicide. Just have Yumi jump in front of the Krabs while Aelita goes into the tower.
Lyoko-Warriors don't think of distracting the monsters and let Aelita sneak away cliché. +3
Yumi and Aelita try to distract the monsters by having them go far from the tower
Hate to break it to you, but that's absolutely not the right thing to do in those "race against time" situations. +1
Aelita has a vision, like Odd
Wait, when did she get this power? And why don't we see it more often? +1
Yumi: I can tele-transport Aelita!
That's stupid. Yumi is unable to fight the monsters when doing this, and if she calculates her distance poorly, Aelita will fall into the Digital Sea. Just have Aelita use her creation power, or even use the Overboard! She proved to be good at piloting this vehicle in the LITERAL previous episode. +5
Aelita enters the invisible tower, and a Kankrelat headbonks it
Hahahahahaha -1
Sissi: Don't you touch Milly, you hear?
Honestly, Sissi is a really cool character in this episode. She protects Milly from the zombies and tries to reassure her like Tamiya would usually do during X.A.N.A attacks (with episodes like Claustrophobia). It's rare seeing this more caring side of her. Frankly, nice job writing a "mean girl" archetype that's a bit more nuanced and not just 100% evil. (yes, I'm talking to you, Thomas Astruc.) -5
Jeremy's ankle gets bitten by Kiwi
Jeremy: Oh, no!
As Aelita enters the tower, Jeremy struggles to maintain control as he is starting to turn into a zombie
Aelita: Jeremy, did you program the return to the past? Jeremy?!
Jeremy barely manages to launch the return to the past as he's transforming into a zombie
Jeremy: Aelita...aah...nnngh...return to the past now!
The show pulls out fake suspense at the very end on the mission on Lyoko and expects us to believe that it won't end well cliché. +3
Ulrich: It's true that she's a pain, but you know, deep down, I think she really likes you.
Aelita: And I really think that she can be very brave and a real nice person...when she wants to be.
Milly: What?!
Jeremy: Yeah! In fact, you can never guess a person's true colors, can you?
Why does Yumi seems to understand what they're referring to? She was absent during the entire zombie ordeal. Heck, I don't even think she saw any zombies! +1
I really think that this episode NAILED the atmosphere. I'm always kind of annoyed of the tropes of dumbing down the heroes to make zombie episodes always get on the BRINK of apocalypse (Zombizou in Miraculous had that problem too) but this one is REALLY saved by its general atmosphere. The dark night skies, the claustrophobic feeling, the "race against time" vibe...shout out to the creators for this. -10
