What residents are capable of vs what they will actually do and what happens when you refuse to do it for them because you know they can do it
I used to work 11 pm to 7 am at my first job as a CNA. we had over 100 residents in this facility. one morning, I was asked to get up another res who was not normally mine.
the evening before, I had seen him use a fork to eat so I knew he was capable of holding objects to his face.
we got him and dressed, when it was time to help with his grooming, I put the toothpaste on HIS ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH mind you.
he looked at it and asked if I was planning on doing it for him. I still had other care to do on residents that actually needed me to change them. when I refused and mentioned he could do it himself, he went on a tirade and asked that I leave his room and they get someone else to go and help him.
a nurse I working with (I grew up with her so I already knew her we) asked why I didn’t help him. I mentioned the part about independence, no using it/loosing it stuff.
she said “well we spoil them sometimes.”
regardless, what would you of done in my position?
