Still looking for awesome, motivated novelists

We have a great discord (roughly 2 months old), with an agented author currently negotiating publishing deals and other authors querying their work! We also have newer authors currently writing.

Open to all genres, looking for novelists, two main requirements: you must be kind and you must be motivated!

Would love to add more energetic voices to the community.

To note, we run writing challenges, have an accountability log, and provide feedback.

[QCRIT] I CHOSE YOU, adult thriller, 75K, 2nd attempt

Hey everyone,

Thank you very much for the advice last week on my first attempt! Given the suggestion to query this book as an adult thriller, I’ve gone ahead and changed the genre and also included that it’s an unreliable narrator.

I’ve also made the query more concrete and less loose. Would love to know how I can improve it.

-----------------------------------------

I hope you’ll consider I CHOSE YOU (complete at 75,000 words) is a speculative psychological thriller with an unreliable narrator that will appeal to fans of the manipulation of time in Wrong Place, Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister and the atmosphere in One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus. I chose you because ____. (MAX TWO SENTENCES).

Twenty-three year old theme park employee Charlotte Shaw thinks she was the last person to see a missing girl, and may also be the cause of her disappearance. Only, the security camera footage just shows Charlotte standing alone in front of her ride queue with no trace of the girl at all.

Charlotte begins to have paranormal experiences while both awake and dreaming. She sees the little girl dying in various settings: falling off a rollercoaster, drowning in a lake, and being stabbed to death in an unfamiliar room. The same day the girl disappears, Charlotte becomes suspicious of a man at the park.

Riddled with the feeling that the little girl is reaching out to her for help, Charlotte is pulled into the police’s missing persons investigation that forces her to abandon a lifetime of passivity and reckon with her escapist habits. Charlotte learns that the suspicious man’s past intertwines with the lives of her long-time group of friends and boyfriend Jeremy, and that the most important clue in the investigation may be in the truth Charlotte has tried to subconsciously bury for years.

Anyone writing psych thrillers?

I’m on my third novel, actually aiming for traditional publishing, and am getting stuck at the developmental editing stage.

Would love to find a community of writers and start a chat or something. Could be on discord?

For motivation purposes, along with tips and resource-sharing and overall good fun.

Or if anyone has a group.. would love to join.

I’m from Canada btw.

EDIT: I also love literary fiction and plan on writing my 4th novel in that genre. So maybe psych thrillers and literary fiction, too.

EDIT: I also got developmental notes from a L6 editor at PRH. So I do have some wisdom to share among the group!

Master doc: top 30 thrillers of all time

I analyzed 215+ comments from a post I made on this sub a few months ago asking people their top recommendations.

This is the list based on total likes. I also have a list based on mentions.

Wanted to give back to the community! Thank you!

Developmental editor came back and has a lot of changes …

How do you stay motivated during the editing process? The structural edits I need to make feel terrifying. Makes me want to just chuck the book out and write something else.

How do you get past that and find your motivation again?

Writing is so fun, editing is…not.

While editing the second draft, have you started to see your story as absolutely dumb?

It’s my third novel and I’ve reached a point where the creativity looks idiotic, words seem repetitive, and the structure could’ve been outlined by a second grader.

Any advice?

Need some developmental editing advice…

I spoke to a few editors and they all said my novel length was 13K words short of the low end of the range for a novel (and even shorter if it’s in my genre).

I do wish to pursue traditional publishing, and simultaneously, I think I know where my manuscript could use depth and where it was rushed.

However, I don’t want to add fluff. I also don’t really, truly know what to add.

How would you approach this? Has anyone had this situation occur in the past?

I’m debating taking a week away from it, reading like five books in my genre, and coming back with a more objective and critical eye?

Looking for any real advice.

Notably, my novel is finished and I already wrote the ending. This means that my chapters are connected so adding some will require dismantling some of the bridges between them, etc.

I don’t know if this has been discussed but I find I’m very good at writing in-the-moment scenes but when it comes to detailing what happened already in the day or week or the previous few days within a paragraph, I become lost.

It ends up feeling like a mundane laundry list. I also don’t know which details to omit.

I remember reading something on this sub that changed my writing completely for the better (regarding first person writing), and I figured I’d pose this question here in case any writers or authors have tips for this.

So I’ve been trying to understand how Freida McFadden writes versus someone like Gillian Flynn.

Freida applies a formulaic structure and likes to change the setting (housemaid, coworker, etc.) (Similar to Agatha Christie, I’d think).

I believe Flynn applies a concept and or thematic idea and writes to watch it unfold.

I naturally gravitate towards Flynn’s work in large part because of its depth.

But I’m wondering, do others see these writers in this way? Or differently?

Any way that you like to categorize thriller books in your mind? Like how do you make those distinctions?

So pretty self-explanatory.

When I was 3 months old, I almost died of pneumonia.

When I was 9 months old, I had to get surgery for my benign tumor.

I’ve never really given these events much meaning so far, but as of late, I’ve been wondering: both those events seem important or at least highly unlikely to happen in the first year of life.

Is there any meaning to them?

I’ve spent a year trying every single food on the market. Tiki cat, open farm, purina, all of it. All he wants is royal canin adult dry food.

He will also eat fancy feast gravy but will never finish it.

He also hates if it’s been opened and refrigerated.

He’s a male Ragdoll and loves snacking throughout the day. Very small portions.

I’ve tried adding broth to the wet food and I’ve tried adding freeze dried toppings. I’ve tried it all.

He won’t even touch any of the shredded wet food options.

I’ve tried cooking for him (egg yolk) and chicken breast. Nada.

He likes licking Greek yogurt.

I want to feed him wet food for obvious reasons but I can’t find the magical formula. My vet says dry is fine if he drinks (and he does, we have a fountain), but I can’t help but feel paranoid.

Help, basically
