Why are Skyline Coney dogs short and without ends?
Been wondering this for years, so I asked:
Why are the weiners used by Skyline Chili so odd? They look like someone took a footlong hot dog, cut the ends off and then cut it into three pieces.
You have a very sharp eye for culinary dimensions—your description is almost mathematically spot-on for how a **Cincinnati-style Coney** is constructed.
That "odd" look isn't an illusion; Skyline (and most traditional Cincinnati chili parlors) uses a very specific type of frankfurter designed to facilitate the "Coney" experience rather than the "Hot Dog" experience.
### The "4-Inch" Standard
While a standard grocery store hot dog is typically 6 inches long (and a footlong is 12), a Skyline wiener is roughly **4 inches** long. Your observation about a footlong cut into three pieces is exactly right—that results in the 4-inch "mini" profile that fits perfectly into a specialized coney bun.
### Why They Look and Feel Different
There are a few structural reasons why these wieners seem "off" compared to what you’d throw on a backyard grill:
* **The Ratio is King:** In a Cincinnati 3-Way or a Coney, the star is the chili and the mountain of shredded cheddar. If you used a standard 6-inch frank, the meat would overwhelm the delicate balance of the thin, Greek-influenced meat sauce. The shorter, thinner dog ensures you get a bit of chili, mustard, onion, and cheese in every single bite.
* **The Purveyor:** Skyline’s wieners are produced by **Blue Grass Quality Meats**, a local company in Erlanger, Kentucky. They manufacture a specific "Coney Frank" specifically for the chili parlor industry.
* **The "Blunt" Ends:** Because they are produced in high-volume "strings" and then cut to that specific 4-inch length, they often lack the tapered, rounded ends of a standard retail hot dog, which contributes to that "cut-up footlong" aesthetic you noticed.
* **The Snap:** Unlike many cheap supermarket dogs, these usually have a natural casing (or a very firm skinless set) because they need to provide a "snap" to contrast with the soft steamed bun and the liquid-heavy chili.
### The Construction Logic
The "oddness" is actually a functional design choice. A standard hot dog is a meal in a bun; a Skyline Coney is designed to be eaten in about three or four bites, often as a side dish to a 3-way or as part of a multi-coney order. If they were any larger, the structural integrity of the steamed bun wouldn't hold up under the weight of the chili and the cheese.
Essentially, you aren't looking at a "small hot dog"—you're looking at a precision-engineered delivery vehicle for chili.
Woeber’s SALAD STYLE Mustard
Does anyone know where I could buy this without paying a ridiculous shipping fee for a $1.30 bottle of mustard?
Insanely easy and insanely good Mac n Cheese
My wife’s Mac n Cheese recipe
Ingredients:
2 cups uncooked macaroni
16 oz. cheddar cheese (Rose uses half sharp and half mild - Don’t use low fat cheese in
this recipe.)
½ stick butter
4 cups whole milk
Salt & Pepper to taste
Preparation:
The cheese can be either grated or cubed in ½ inch cubes.
Preheat oven to 350.
Put the butter in the casserole and place it in the oven as it preheats so that the butter
melts.
After the butter melts, take the casserole out of the oven and add the uncooked macaroni
followed by the cheese. Then pour in the milk and add some salt and pepper.
DO NOT STIR.
Just put the casserole back in the oven and bake for 60 to 75 minutes, depending on how
brown you want it.
That’s all there is to it! I can’t believe how well this comes out with uncooked pasta. It’s
like magic!
The fundamental Mac n Cheese question - oven baked or creamy
We are divided into two large camps- the people who like creamy Mac n Cheese (like Kraft and Panera) and the people who like oven baked Mac n Cheese. Face it, these are two completely different dishes. Unfortunately, they have the same name. Personally, I’m in the oven baked camp.

What do you think a French Apple Pie is?
French Apple is my favorite pie with raisins and white icing but so many people disagree on what it is. The picture is TastyKake’s version which has all the correct ingredients. A lot of controversy on what a French Apple Pie is
Five and Ten Store Candy Counters
Who remembers the days when stores like Woolworths had special counters with candy and fresh roasted nuts? The aroma of the roasted nuts would fill the whole store. So great!
Roy Rogers Double R Burger
Roy Rogers are scarce around here but I always loved their Double R Burger which is basically a cheeseburger topped with some deli smoked ham. Who would have thought that combination was so good?!? I never saw it anywhere else but it’s simple to duplicate.
Specialty of Tambellini’s and The Italian Oven. (Both sadly gone except for a very few Italian Ovens). IMHO, no other fried zucchini compares. I took this picture at the Italian Oven in Connellsville PA.
I loved these but they don’t make them anymore. Took me a long time to find a picture.
I just used my Quest for the first time in a couple of weeks. I was shocked by the new UI. It took me five minutes just to find my apps. The new UI is obviously all about trying to sell stuff to you. Actually using your apps is way down the list. I HATE IT!!!
