NZ legal deposit when publishing through KDP?

I am publishing my book in november. I am publishing an Ebook and a Paperback. I am unsure about the exact rules of legal deposits for print on demand and ebooks.

Please if someone could explain what I am doing because I seem to be getting conflicting information?

Do I need to order a test copy for my paperback?

I had planned on it but apparently they won't ship test copies to where i live (they will still ship my published book but not the test, apparently this is a common issue).

My options are dont get one, or have it shipped to australia and then have a connecting postal company ship it too me which will cost a lot more. I just though I would see if people find the test copy worth it? are people finding issues. there shouldnt be any issues according to all the checks and my careful formatting and cover creation.

what should I do?

Re-writing a chapter to not include song lyrics.

I have a finished manuscript. I was checking the copyright laws and realised I can’t have direct song lyrics. The scene has a father and son, in the car, singing when will my life begin from tangled. Does anyone know how I could rewrite it to not have dialogue of the lyrics.

I was thinking maybe saying line 1, line 2, of the song. Or maybe look for an un copyrighted song, like maybe twinkle twinkle little star (although the kids is five so he’s a bit old for that). Maybe if someone had an example??

Empty chapters to portray an unconscious character?

I am working on another book right now (my debut novel The Thing About Ollie comes out in November, instagram: levithomas.writing) and had an idea.

It is a dual POV mm romance. In the second half of the book one of my characters is unconscious for a little while. for the most part my book switches pov each chapter between the two. so I was thinking where his chapters would be i could add a chapter title and his name to show the pov (like all the other chapters) but not write anything. there would only be one or two chapters together.

when I thought of it at first I thought it sounded crazy but then i thought of the twilight books when they have the months passing on each page and I thought it was similar.

What do we think?

The Thing About Ollie by Levi Thomas, MM romance with hurt x comfort trope and mental health rep.

Hey! My name is Levi and I am an Indie author releasing my debut novel in November, (13 of November is the estimated date barring any complications).

I am looking for some more readers who are excited for my story and to support an indie author. My instagram is Levithomas.writing and my secret goal is 100 followers before the release I'm about halfway there. I also love supporting other indie authors in similar genres.

There will be ARC opportunities coming soon as well!

Blurb:

Tyler has decided that being a gay twenty-one-year-old with a kid means he will never find someone. He has submitted himself to a life of meaningless hookups, a job he hates, and a deep, painful loneliness only helped by the presence of his son, Ollie.

In a last ditch effort to find a relationship, Tyler pushes himself to go on one more date where he meets Ethan. A chatty, charismatic, stylish, guy who despite his many friends is rather lonely. They both quickly find what they were searching for, but between Tyler’s mental health issues, and Ethan’s not-wanting-kids, their happily-ever-after is more than complicated to find.

Over a ten-year period, Tyler and Ethan navigate mental and physical health struggles. Together, they find footing in their relationship, and figure out how to care for Ollie in their own way.

Should I get a sensitivity reader?

I am currently writing a book, It's my second book (I am self publishing my first in november!! yay) and I am trying to figure out if I need a sensitivity reader.

The book is about a friends with benefits situation between to very depressed individuals. I am confident writing mental health and queer topics (i've done both before and experience both day to day, I am also surrounded by people in the same boat so I have a pretty good understanding. they're also themes I read really often so I understand what others are writing) but the book also has a disabled fmc and a sex worker mc.

I have a spinal cord injury - just like my fmc - however mine is less severe (i am not in a wheelchair) and had a very different cause. Most of her life that I talk about in the book is related to my own experiences, I have done extensive research and am being very careful with infantilisation (as in not including it). But I'm still a bit nervous about how people will percieve my writing. (It also may be helpful to note I am a trans man, but lived as a girl for seventeen years while being disabled - therefore am able to write from the perspective of a disabled female - particularly in the situation of sex.

I am less confident around the Sex Worker side of things. I'm not sure what is and isn't okay. I would say I'm relatively woke and aware, however everything I know is from the media which cannot always be trusted - I have done research and am being careful but I don't want to upset anyone. he's also not particularly professional. He more goes on hookups through apps and has people pay him.

I'm new to sensitivity reading and am wondering if it's worth it? Is it like Beta reading but just making sure nothing's offensive?

Thank You !!

Underage characters having sex?

My debut novel The Thing About Ollie by Levi Thomas is coming out this November (yay). It is an MM romance with smut, both characters are adults (accept for a flashback of sex the mc had as a teenager).
Instagram: Levithomas.writing

I recently found another book I wrote when I was 13. It's awfully written, but I great story that i'm really passionate about. I wanted to re-write it - the characters were 16 and 17 and have sex maybe three or four times throughout the book. I've never read a book where characters who are underage have sex (but i usually gravitate towards books where the characters are out of highschool). I'm just wondering is that okay and common - for reference I am 18. I don't want to write the story without sex, i feel it's important to their characters and the story, so if it's not okay I just won't write it.

What do we think?

EDIT: I think i've decided that with this project I will either change the story and put them at university age (19&20 probably). It will take more work but I agree with what's been said that it's probably the safer idea-thats if I even go ahead with this project, i'm still pretty undecided.
Thank you for all the replies and help!

I want a rec for a spicy mlm gymnast romance.

I want a rec for a spicy mlm gymnast romance. I would rather it be fast paced. I get frustrated when half of the book they are apart and then they kiss on page 250/300.

would be best if I could get it on ku <3

thanks!

I want to read more mm books from Indie authors.

I'm looking for indie authors who are published or soon to be published. mlm romance is my genre of choice, but I also love books with trans characters. I like spice but no fantasy or historical stuff.

If you're an author drop your book and somewhere I can follow you or if you know an indie author do the same.

New mlm Romance with spice and mental health topics coming soon! The Thing About Ollie.

I'm releasing my debut novel soon. The Thing About Ollie. A mlm romance with spice (but not overtaken and developmentally important, while still being fun and hot). It has deep mental health topics.
Instagram: Levithomas.writing - for updates on publishing and snippets of my story!

Synopsis:
Tyler had sex one night and it ended up the way all seventeen year old boys dream, two minutes of unenjoyable friction and a baby.
Fast forward four years and Tyler has decided that being a gay twenty one year old with a kid means he will never find someone… he has submitted himself to a life of meaningless hookups, a job he hates, and pure loneliness other than his son, Ollie.
In a last ditch effort to fill a quota of attempts to find a relationship he goes on one last date…
Over a ten year period Tyler learns to love not only his partner and his life, but himself.

Written by me, Levi Thomas a gay man who has struggled with mental health myself I wanted to put together a really fun and just good novel that dealt with so many struggles of a repressed gay man, while still being a lovely little romance novel.

Does this make sense?

For reference they're making out on their wedding night.

"Sometimes I would open my eyes and I could see his pink skin splattered with chestnut flecks."

Like do you know what I mean? I do reference what I mean later (which I'm not saying because I want to see if you can guess).

also another from the same scene

"My hands ran over his ass and thighs. I could feel the tiger stripes that spread over him."

do people generally know what I mean by tiger stripes?

Thank you!

I am writing a book and need information about Cerebral Palsy.

I am a writer currently editing my first book with the hope of a november release. My next book will have an MC with Cerebral Palsy.

i myself have a spinal cord injury from a tumour removal when I was two. My symptoms are extremely similar to those with CP, sometimes when I go to the doctors and they only skim my notes they assume I have it and start talking to me about my CP, which is kind of awkward because I don't have it, haha.

for ease of understanding with my MC I am giving her CP as it is a nameable thing rather than the long explanation of the type of spinal cord injury I have.

the book will be about her exploring her understanding of her body and her sexuality and such (it's still in early planning stages). I just want any kind of thing that you (as in anyone with CP or really any kind of spinal cord injury) may want to see represented.

also just for transparency and to help people understand that I can write from the perspective of a disabled woman. I am a trans guy, so I spent the first 17 years of my life as a disabled woman, and the book will be a duel pov with another guy mc, who is kind of her 'love interest' but it's more of a friends with benefits. But I also want to relate to experiences I haven't had and don't understand so well so please ANYTHING you want would be so helpful!

Thank you!
