Ozzy & Jake - a photo I haven’t seen before.

Honestly, I would have been happy if Jake had never been fired.

The 80’s were a special kind of wild…

I am not entirely sure if this was taken in the 70’s or 80’s, but the place that I found it said 80’s, so I’m running with it…

My bedroom circa 1984 or 1985…

Here’s a picture of the corner of my bedroom, taken sometime in 1984 or 1985.

My musical tastes are obvious, but I got into way heavier music less than a year after this.

Off to the right of Ed is a foldout poster (from Kerrang!, I think) with stills of every Def Leppard video that had been released up to that point.

Not shown in the picture - giant sized AC/DC and Iron Maiden posters.

Music aside, there’s a promotional poster from the 1984 Summer Olympics on the upper left, and I think my dad got the poster of the arcade game girl as a gag gift from work.

I distinctly remember getting this issue of Hit Parader…

…and I remember thinking, ”Why WASP? If the theme of the issue is Heaven & Hell, wouldn’t Slayer fit better with Stryper?”

I overthought shit at 16 apparently…

A thought on the uniqueness of 80’s metal guitar players…

So I have been listening to (Metal Blade CEO) Brian Slagel’s podcast for a while now. This week’s episode featured Mötley Crüe’s “Live Wire”.

It’s no secret that I am not a huge Mötley Crüe fan, but there is no doubt that this song belongs in the discussion of songs that define heavy metal.

But this post isn’t about that. It‘s about something else Slagel said.

He talked about how much he loves Mick’s tone, and he pointed out that, back then, you instantly knew who certain players were the second you heard them.

That really landed with me. Lynch, Mick, Ed (obviously), Rhoads, Jake, Vai, Warren, Vito, Slash, Sabo/Hill, etc. All those guys had an easily recognizable signature tone.

Slagel then went on to note that we’ve kind of lost that in today’s hard rock/heavy metal. And I have to be honest, I think I agree with him. I can’t think of the last newer guitar player that I could recognize instantly. Mark Morton, maybe?

That‘s unfortunate.

But that’s what made the “hair metal” era special. We had players that were legit heroes. And I’m glad that we were there to witness it.
