I joined my current workplace a few months ago and honestly, I feel like I’ve been under a microscope since day one.
I was called something pretty horrible on my first day, and since then I’ve constantly felt judged. My boss has commented on my grooming, I’ve been shouted at multiple times, and I’ve even been told that there are complaints that I’m “not working.”
There’s also a classmate of mine who is very close to my boss and the seniors. I feel like she has a lot of influence, and sometimes it feels like people have already decided that I’m incompetent.
She has even shouted at me over work-related things. She really feels terrifying and kinda feels like she’s actively in directly bullying me. During our college days also she tried to disrespect me a lot like I’m below here like an untouchable or something; would talk sweetly but her words are literal torture so I cut her off. She was one of the first friend group in my college days
What makes it harder is that I’m genuinely trying. I’m only a few months into the job, I commute almost 2 hours a day, have other responsibilities/jobs, and I’m also trying to support my family financially. I’m exhausted but I still show up and try to improve.
The scrutiny has gotten to the point where I sometimes sit at my desk with a pit in my stomach because I’m scared of doing something wrong. I even get anxious about walking up to people to ask basic work questions.
I know I’m still learning and I don’t expect anyone to hold my hand. I just want to become good at my work and build a reputation for being reliable.
I don’t want to quit. I need the experience, the money and the career growth. I also don’t want to start bootlicking people or getting involved in office politics.
For people who have dealt with toxic workplaces/favouritism:
How do you protect yourself, build a good reputation and stay mentally detached from office politics?
I just want to keep my head down, get better at my work, get promoted and eventually build something of my own. I’m honestly just trying to survive this phaser without completely losing my confidence.

Please let me know the side hustle which is actually working in India; even tho doing one side hustle it’s barely scratching the surface
I’ve just completed three months at my current job and I’m entering my fourth month. I’m already feeling completely overwhelmed by the situation.
Yesterday and today, I had to take leave because I have a UTI/infection and needed to go to the hospital. I genuinely need the rest right now, but instead of being able to recover, I’ve been lying awake the entire night panicking about whether my company is going to think I’m irresponsible or fire me for taking too many leaves.
My HR has already told me, “You’re taking too many leaves.” And honestly, I’m exhausted hearing that when I’m physically unwell.I genuinely took 1 leave to per month in the first two months but it was like my entire family got sick and my immunity system keeps crashing. I’m sorry I guess
The anxiety has gotten so bad that I couldn’t sleep at all last night. I kept thinking about what they might say when I go back, that I’m not taking work seriously, that I’m behaving like a college student, etc. The stress even upset my stomach badly.
What makes this worse is that I’ve heard the “you need to get serious” criticism at my previous workplace too.
I know I have things I can improve. I’ve been told I use my phone too much and that I’ve been coming late. But I’ve genuinely been trying to correct those things. I’ve been consistently coming on time and using my phone much less. I’m not saying I’m a perfect employee, but I am trying.
So I’m struggling to understand something:
When did prioritizing your health become evidence that you’re not serious about your career?
I’m currently physically sick, exhausted, sleep-deprived and anxious, and yet I feel guilty for taking two days off to actually deal with it.
On top of that, I have another freelance/second-job project waiting for updates, so I feel like I can’t even switch off from work completely. I’m constantly thinking about whether I’m behind, whether someone is going to complain, whether I’m going to lose my job, etc.
And now I’m questioning myself so much. I’m starting to wonder whether I’m actually the problem. Am I genuinely behaving in a way that makes me difficult to employ, or am I being made to feel like everything I do is evidence that I’m irresponsible?
The workplace itself has started feeling extremely negative to me. It’s not even necessarily that the workload is unbearable. It’s the constant feeling of being watched, judged and reminded that I’m supposedly not “serious” enough.
I’ve started looking for remote jobs because I honestly don’t know if I want to continue working in environments like this. Part of me wants to just freelance and work for myself. But financially, I’m not in a position where I can simply quit my 9–5 right now.
And that’s what makes me feel trapped.
I don’t want to run away from work. I want to work. I want to build my career. I just want a little grace when I’m genuinely sick.
Right now I honestly just wish the entire world would stop for a few days, let me recover, and then I could come back and function like a normal person again.
Am I overreacting to this? How do you distinguish between legitimate workplace feedback and being unfairly labelled as an irresponsible employee? And how would you handle this situation if you were in my position?
I recently graduated and started working at an architecture/interior design firm. I’m still fairly new, so I’m trying to keep my head down, do good work, learn, and go home. I also have other responsibilities after work, so I genuinely don’t have the time or energy for office politics.
The problem is a coworker (who also happened to be my classmate in college) is leading one of the projects I’m helping on. From college, I’ve always had the feeling that she saw me as competition, but I brushed it off because I didn’t want unnecessary drama.
Now it feels like the same pattern is happening at work.
The biggest incident was when files I had worked on disappeared from the project folder. She acted like she had no idea what happened. I ended up coming in early, redoing the work, and saving it under a different folder name so it wouldn’t disappear again. Later she asked where the work was, and I pointed her to that folder. I don’t have proof that she deleted the files, so I can’t accuse her directly, but it definitely made me stop trusting her.
Since then I’ve felt like:
My contributions aren’t acknowledged, even when I help with the project.
My name gets left out when the team is mentioned.
I’m constantly second-guessing whether I’m being set up to look incompetent.
I dread opening project files because I’m worried something will have changed.
This has affected me more than I’d like to admit. I’ve cried over the thought that if enough people think I’m incapable, my probation could be affected. I’m even back in therapy partly because the stress has become overwhelming.
The hardest part is that I don’t know what’s real and what’s anxiety anymore. Sometimes I feel like she’s actively trying to damage my reputation, and other times I wonder if stress is making me interpret everything in the worst possible way. Either way, the environment feels exhausting.
I’m considering talking to my manager, but the only concrete incident I can point to is the missing files. Everything else is more of a pattern of feeling excluded or undermined, and I know that’s difficult to prove. I don’t want to sound paranoid or start unnecessary conflict, especially since I’m still new.
For people who’ve dealt with manipulative coworkers:
How did you protect yourself without escalating things?
At what point do you involve your manager?
How do you separate genuine sabotage from your own anxiety when both can look similar?
I’m trying to stay professional and focus on my work, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult.
